Avatar    Thu. 9/19/13 9:34am KP:

Two years ago i had ongoing Twitter exchange with the then newly crowned Miss America. She sang God BLess America in rain at like 2 am at Yankee Stadium. i sent her a message saying it was a great performance under circumstances. She replied right away and was quite cool. A friend stole her away tweeting about her piano playing but it was nice while it lasted.
Avatar    Thu. 9/19/13 9:34am KP:

Howdy all! Who did WFMU nominate for this year's Miss Radio USA? Joe Belock I hope.
Avatar Thu. 9/19/13 9:37am tim from champaign:

Gabor Szabo. I think of his playing as snazzy.
Avatar    Thu. 9/19/13 9:37am Joe McG:

@tim: How did you guess? We don't understand why he didn't win in a landslide.
Avatar    Thu. 9/19/13 9:37am KP:

She was very normal (and cute instead of plastic looking). i was at work and was asked to do something. i said, hold im tweeting with the newly crowned Miss America.

Avatar Thu. 9/19/13 9:51am tim from champaign:

Don't feel bad, Joe. I missed it too. I also don't know what happened with the Miley Cyrus thing either. But I immediately put my head in the sand with that one.
Avatar    Thu. 9/19/13 9:54am Joe McG:

@tim: I couldn't escape that Miley thing. But I thought she was still doing a Disney TV show, so that goes to show what I know about her exciting career.

As a side effect of the Miley ordeal, I did get to see a bunch of female fronted fashionista rap videos of yootoob one night via my wife and her friend. That was pretty fun. Now I know the inspiration for Spring Breakers.

Avatar    Thu. 9/19/13 10:24am Ike:

Yep, Tim, Laura C. is cool. When I first discovered FMU in the 90s, I shunned her show when it was on Sat. afternoons after Dave Mandl, but I gradually came around. Classic country and indie country's good qualities were a total surprise (vs. the slick modern commercial stuff, which was all I knew).

*Oops, Brian, not Tim.
Avatar    Thu. 9/19/13 10:26am Joe McG:

I agree with tonyb. Really great book, wish I had a copy for myself! There's also a very good Evan Davies archive where he talked to the author and they played glam chestnuts.
Avatar    Thu. 9/19/13 10:27am Cecile:

I gotta say, even though some of my favorite music is country, and I grew up with classic country and Hee Haw, soul and rock spoke to me a lot more.

new iphone app is great, many thanks to Kenzo or whoever is behind it. i like how all the archives and podcasts are together in one big list. also archive streaming doesn't start skipping like mad after the 30 minute mark any more! woo yeah

Heya Joe. Late for the noise here on the coast.

I really ought to read Electric Eden. I think I even own a copy.

Music's making me homesick.
Avatar    Thu. 9/19/13 11:20am Joe McG:

Hey, Carm! Glad to hear it works, Steve! Kenzo and friends will be very pleased to hear. @Mike: It's a pretty good read, but a bit spotty. I didn't finish it feeling I got the definitive view, like you do with Jon Savage's "England's Dreaming" or something.
Avatar Thu. 9/19/13 11:20am Sean B.:

Wonderful show today Joe!...;Many chuckles and surpises throughout this morning; Thanks!.Ohh yes....does anyone remember hearing "In The Mood" by Robert Plant around 85? and thinking "This is life saving stuff here"... those were different times.

Dropping in for a few minutes, and I am delighted to hear John Kirkpatrick!
Avatar    Thu. 9/19/13 11:22am Ike:

Thanks, A.!
Avatar    Thu. 9/19/13 11:22am Joe McG:

Hey, Sean and Rob! Thanks for dropping by. I saw "In the Modd" the other day on 45 and didn't buy it. What's wrong with me? I had this mental idea that one Robert Plant single was sufficient, but I think I'm wrong.
Avatar    Thu. 9/19/13 11:23am Carmichael:

I saw John Kirkpatrick play with Richard Thompson about 500 years ago. The Gartloney Rats would fit in nice here, if you have it on quick-draw.

Nice thoughts, PSS. Sorry, BTW, for the very Surface Noise-y Steve Miller. The station's copy has seen happier days.
Avatar    Thu. 9/19/13 11:27am common:

i love old steve miller stuff
Avatar    Thu. 9/19/13 11:27am Cecile:

Steve Miller when he still had an edge, but slowly moving toward his brainless phase.
Avatar    Thu. 9/19/13 11:27am Brian in UK:

Avast there Sean & splice the cabin boy.

Joe this is years since I heard Mr Miller. He was (is) topping.
Avatar    Thu. 9/19/13 11:28am Cecile:

Plant did a hell of a cover of Song to the Siren on one of his solo records.
Avatar    Thu. 9/19/13 11:28am KevinfromBayRidge:

Ah!! the GOOD Steve Miller!
Avatar Thu. 9/19/13 11:28am Sean D. Daily:

@Joe: A single Robert Plant single is NEVER enough. You forgot the first rule of Record Club: "Buy ALL the Robert Plant singles." (I'd talk more like a pirate today, but I think my coworkers would strangle me if I did)

arrrrgh, Sean.

Maybe there should be an official segment where you play the most messed-up, scratchy, cruddy record you can find.
Avatar    Thu. 9/19/13 11:31am Cecile:

you can sing parts of the Babys Isnt' it Time to this. Just noticed. Why did I notice that?

Transatlantic was never quite Topic only a step behind.

I have an unfair advantage on Pirate Day -- my work kitchen is full of dough HOOKS!
Avatar    Thu. 9/19/13 11:32am Cecile:

I am suprised how solo Plant has moved people younger than me. My friends adore his solo albums, and I'm getting the same vibe here. I just never can get used to him singing without Led Zep behind him.
Avatar    Thu. 9/19/13 11:33am Cecile:

hahahahah
I have a dough hook at home too!

My scratchiest disc is an old Hanna Barbera platter featuring Huckleberry Hound, Pixie & Dixie, etc ... It's barely audible through all the scratches. One day I shall burn it to MP3 and clean it. It is decreed.

This Cal Hand piece is very nice.
