@Droll: Let's do this.
  Sun. 9/1/13 9:26pm bloopy:

it just dawned me on that Steppenwolf track has the same riff as a track from David Crosby's first solo lp... it sounds exactly the same??? i thought it was crosby for a second

cowboy movie? I love that song

Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 9:34pm Dave L.B. is RRN63:

Crosby 'If Only>' :
...basically Cros & The Dead of course
...or is it the CSNY version of 'Woodstock' (to continue theme I had on Monica's...) has opening chords that are 'Pusher-esque'...

'The Monster Show' by David J. Skal notes that Vampire & Werewolf were once basically combined (Dracula could be a Wolf...) & later split into seperate popular Archetypes...
  Sun. 9/1/13 9:35pm bloopy:

yeah yeah i think its cowboy movie

Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 9:39pm Jeezy:

@ Fleep... One of my fave things about Spotify is that I can take it running on my phone (premium Spotify anyhoo.) Can I do this with Grooveshark?
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 9:41pm Dave Mandl:

I subscribed to Spotify Premium for a while, and I've gotta say I miss it. Being able to listen on my phone, and even offline.
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 9:44pm Dave L.B. is RRN63:

fleep: ...apparently...
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 9:45pm Jeezy:

Yes, Dave.. I LOVE Spotify premium. Have loved it every day since I got it over a year ago..
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 9:45pm fleep:

@Jeezy My phone is just a phone, but there are Grooveshark Mobile apps, so maybe? Both Android and iPhone.
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 9:46pm Uncle Michael:

If you don't mind the thematic core of the album, "Paul Kantner's Jefferson Starship's" Blows Against The Empire is a pretty greeat "P.E.R.R.O." album. Other than the first use of the prase "Jefferson Starship," it's got next to nothing to do with the band of that name.
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 9:47pm Jeezy:

Hmmm... OK thanks Fleep, I shall investigate...
  Sun. 9/1/13 9:48pm blee:

A naked American man stole my balloons.
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 9:50pm Dave Mandl:

A friend recently burned me a CD of Grace Slick's solo LP Manhole, from '74. A great record. I hadn't heard it in decades.
  Sun. 9/1/13 9:50pm Carmichael:

Hi Dave and Laborers. I am a clothed American.
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 9:51pm Dave L.B. is RRN63:

Wow! This Brummmels sounds 70s-ish! Please explain...
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 9:52pm Uncle Michael:

I haven't heard that record, Dave.
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 9:52pm Dave Mandl:

Hey Carmichael. Welcome.
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 9:52pm Dave Mandl:

UM: Excellent. You never see it anywhere.
  Sun. 9/1/13 9:53pm fudge:

Is there wolf theme going on tonight?
  Sun. 9/1/13 9:53pm Carmichael:

Strange, just talking today about Starship. I went to high school with Craig Chaquico.
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 9:53pm Dave Mandl:

RRN63: Yeah, it's a later Beau Brummels record, from maybe '75.
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 9:54pm Dave L.B. is RRN63:

Huh! Ta.
  Sun. 9/1/13 9:55pm HollyT:

Hi Dave!!

Hey there, Ms. H.
  Sun. 9/1/13 9:57pm HollyT:

OMG, Coyle and Sharpe. YES
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 9:57pm Dave L.B. is RRN63:

  Sun. 9/1/13 10:01pm HollyT:

"Cha-cha-cha du loup" coming up, I hope
  Sun. 9/1/13 10:02pm Carmichael:

I'm kinda hoping you don't play Clap For the Wolfman. Even though I admired the guy.
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 10:03pm Dave Mandl:

HT: Not sure if we have that. I'll check for next week.
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 10:06pm Dave L.B. is RRN63:

...Roky Erickson *has* to have a werewolf song (?)...

- some DJ somewhere - Mike Shelley I think ? Bob Brainen maybe? - was playing some Wolfman Jack bit
- & I think WJ was maybe more out there~surrealistic than he's prob. remembered for...
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 10:07pm Droll:

Does Eric Woolfson (Alan Parsons Project) fit under this show's umbrella? I can't think of any Jethrol Tull wolf references, but I'm sure you're saving that for the finale.
  Sun. 9/1/13 10:07pm HollyT:

More wolf-iness: Little Red Riding Hood by S the S; Wolfgang Press
  Sun. 9/1/13 10:08pm Matheus:

- Lon Chaney Jr. Xmas tracks...
  Sun. 9/1/13 10:09pm HollyT:

DM: 'Cha-cha du loup' is Serge Gainsbourg. There's gotta be a bunch of SG records floating around over there.
  Sun. 9/1/13 10:10pm HollyT:

What about Peter Wolf? *snark*
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 10:11pm Dave L.B. is RRN63:

...more likely Peter *&* the Wolf some egghead longhair program like this...
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 10:12pm Dave L.B. is RRN63:

Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 10:16pm Jeezy:

Humorous postscript to last week's discussion of the Beatles Mono Box Set: After much hand-wringing and consideration I decided to get it as an early Hanukah present for myself... After much online shopping and so forth it suddenly dawned on me... Since I bough t a new Mac, I no longer own a CD player! :-/
  Sun. 9/1/13 10:17pm HollyT:

ahahaha, I was all, "This can't be right..."
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 10:17pm fleep:

Wasn't sure. This is FMU, after all.
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 10:17pm Jeezy:

On WFMU, one never knows if it's a CD malfunction or the actual selection...
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 10:18pm Dave L.B. is RRN63:

...it may be available as a thumb drive
...housed inna green Apple...
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 10:19pm Dave Mandl:

@Jeezy: Sometimes even I don't know.
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 10:20pm Dave L.B. is RRN63:

...maybe not the Mono...
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 10:20pm Dave Mandl:

Doesn't your Mac have a CD drive?
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 10:20pm Dave L.B. is RRN63:

Hullo Syd.
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 10:21pm Droll:

They make USB CD drives, but I've also noticed the days of physical media are numbered. Streaming is more convenient and gives more control to content owners. Done deal.
I sincerely doubt there will be nostalgia over CD the way there is over vinyl. Digging through CDs sounds more absurd than digging through "vinyls".
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 10:22pm Jeezy:

No, Dave, new Macs do NOT have a CD drive!
Ans Dave L.B... it seems the USB is only available in stereo!
Ooooh cruel world, why dost though mock me?!?!?!
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 10:23pm Dave L.B. is RRN63:

- well - much easier to rip a CD to File than a 'Vinyl'
- whereas there's 'Vinyl' stuff that is not around otherwise...
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 10:23pm Dave Mandl:

Huh. No CD player? No more ripping.
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 10:24pm fleep:

Drive ins face total distinction if they don't cough up $80K for a digital projection system. No more prints.
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 10:24pm Jeezy:

Get with the times, Dave! Everyone under 40 has ripped by now!
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 10:25pm Dave Mandl:

They think you're going to buy all your music from the iTunes Store forever.
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 10:25pm Dave L.B. is RRN63:

- is Beatles USB MP4 (~Lossless) - or MP3 ?...
- I would like Remasters to be 20-Bit anyhow (why not go all the way w/ Beatles & Hendrix & the like? Not important enuff ?? Not in the budget - ?!?!...)
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 10:25pm fleep:

Extinction. Wow. Talk about a brain cookie.
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 10:25pm Droll:

DM, I'd like to direct your attention to the first hour's discussion about streaming music services. It's a done deal -- all free all the time everywhere for everyone.
...Don't get me started on what this means to musicians.
  Sun. 9/1/13 10:26pm HollyT:

Pshaw. Everyone knows wax cylinders are the future. Again.
  Sun. 9/1/13 10:27pm trish:

Quite the wolf pack, Dave.
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 10:27pm Dave L.B. is RRN63:

...that USB *prob.* Lossless @ around 4 GB...
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 10:27pm Ken From Hyde Park:

The little old movie theater in my home town took up a collection and applied for a grant to upgrade to digital.
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 10:30pm The_Use_Music:

Man that Syd Barrett brought me back
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 10:31pm Dave L.B. is RRN63:

...got Barrett Box set - & there are a few extras/alternates ;
- Gotta credit Waters & Gilmour; most of those great lead guitar bits we think of as part of Syd's oeuvre are prob. actually DaveG.'s...
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 10:31pm Dave Mandl:

@trish: Total coincidence.
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 10:33pm Dave Mandl:

@Droll: Yes, I know (about online music being the future). But at the very least people do own lots of CDs and DVDs. And if you have a Netflix DVD sub rather than streaming you can't watch that on your MAc.
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 10:33pm Dave Mandl:

@T_U_M: Yeah, brilliant.
  Sun. 9/1/13 10:34pm trish:

@Dave Yeah. And with that earlier werewolf one, too.
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 10:40pm Mdurek(The_Use):

I had to look it up after I got home. That Curse Ov Dialect jam was hot!
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 10:48pm Dave L.B. is RRN63:

- Having read the Jobs bio :
- of course - there's Bill Gate's observation :
'Macs come w/ an interesting feature - incompatibility'
...but was also Jobs who took people like Sony - who already both invented portable music devices w/ the Walkman - *&* own all the music thru Colombia - & took them by their little frightened corporate hands & showed them how they could participate in the Present state of technology - & not just, say, sue the fans / potential future customers...
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 10:49pm Dave L.B. is RRN63:

Buckinghams - great tracks that are not the Hits...
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 10:50pm Uncle Michael:

I'm with Mr. Gates on this one. Not a fan of the "we know what's best for you" approach.
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 10:51pm Dave Mandl:

RRN63: True of so many bands. That's the sad thing about Classic Rock radio. If you must play the same 20 bands, at least play something different. The Kinks recorded more than 3 songs.
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 10:51pm duke:

Wait, do I detect a wolf theme?
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 10:51pm Dave L.B. is RRN63:

- deffo the flipside of Apple making such kewl toys.
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 10:52pm Dave Mandl:

@duke: I don't do themes.
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 10:53pm pacific standard simon:

Hey, Dave! Finished with work and wolfed my food so I could join all the fun!
  Sun. 9/1/13 10:53pm 12539:

Does Fripp & Eno's 'Lupus' count?
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 10:54pm Uncle Michael:

I'm with you Dave. Yet...last week I opened my show with someone's biggest hit and as of now, I think that will happen next week, too. I refuse to relegate the hits...just because they're hits.
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 10:54pm The_Use_Music:

I would love to play theremin on top of this
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 10:56pm pacific standard simon:

So... will the wolf survive?
  Sun. 9/1/13 10:56pm trish:

Lupines (Lupinus polyphyllus)
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 10:56pm Droll:

This isn't a theme show -- it's a bet DM is 2/3rds of the way to winning. I'm trying to figure out which fool will have to pay up in an hour.
  Sun. 9/1/13 10:58pm HollyT:

That's a sucker bet, for sure.
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 10:59pm duke:

I agree about "classic rock" stations. There's about 100 years of recorded music and 60 years of rock and roll and they still mange to only play the same 20 songs by the same people
  Sun. 9/1/13 10:59pm Ambrose Wolfinger:

Never give a sucker an even break
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 11:00pm Dave L.B. is RRN63:

- what w/ all the specialized targeted Formats, & listening in restaurants sort of thing
- I realized I don't hate all Top40
...I just hate all Top40 after the Mid1970s - about when all the Punks began to wonder why the Ramones weren't Commercial
...yerknow - yeah - w/ exceptions...
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 11:00pm Dave Mandl:

@pss: Greetings. You shouldn't eat so fast!
  Sun. 9/1/13 11:02pm Libby Wolfson:

I'm digging the show tonight.
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 11:03pm pacific standard simon:

If you think formatted radio is bad, try working with someone who plugs their phone into powered speakers to listen to Pandora, and they've never listed any favorite songs by any band other than Led Zeppelin or Pink Floyd. Holy guacamole, it's dire!
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 11:03pm Uncle Michael:

The wolf survived.
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 11:04pm pacific standard simon:

Keep digging, there might be a bone.
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 11:05pm Dave Mandl:

@Libby: Thanks. I loved your show on SCTV.
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 11:05pm Dave L.B. is RRN63:

...take out 'DarkSide', 'Wall', & 'Stairway'

...for yerknow - a couple days...
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 11:06pm Mdurek(The_Use):

Why do I know Los Lobos?? From one of Val Keuhne's nights? Hmmm...to google
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 11:06pm Droll:

PSS, Dot's Deli in here in Fremont does that but it's 90's hip-hop, not classic rock. Kid-n-Play, LL Cool J, Fresh Prince, Run DMC, etc.
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 11:07pm Uncle Michael:

Libby's taking her own head, screwing it on right, and no guy's gonna tell her it ain't.
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 11:08pm pacific standard simon:

Rabbit, you just listed half this guy's playlist, plus Animals. Sorry, no Syd!
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 11:09pm Mdurek:

Must go now! Loving the show, so nice on my drive home from Metuchen to JC...take care all!

The chemical symbol for tungsten is W, because some call it wolfram.
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 11:10pm Dave Mandl:

Mdurek: Night! Take care.
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 11:12pm Uncle Michael:

It's time for my commute too...from an upright to a recumbent posture. Great stuff DM. Night all.

  Sun. 9/1/13 11:21pm HollyT:

Hahaha, Fleep!
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 11:21pm Droll:

[slapping money down]
I'll take part of THAT bet!
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 11:21pm pacific standard simon:

@Dave - You already played my favorite wolf song, second song into the show.

@fleep - but their complexions are very clear.
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 11:22pm Dave L.B. is RRN63:

...Jazz started in the Whorehouses...shouldn't be surprised...
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 11:22pm duke:

I gotta go. Thanks for keeping the wolf from the door.
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 11:24pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Do you have the theme from Airwolf coming up?
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 11:24pm pacific standard simon:

@Holly - Courtney Love delights in inflicting that song on her live audience.

Have a good night, duke.
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 11:26pm Dave Mandl:

@HT: There's a Duran Duran song that I like a lot. I'll see if we have it.
  Sun. 9/1/13 11:28pm HollyT:

The last 30 minutes will be Wolf Blitzer segments remixed by Negativland.
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 11:28pm ottovonbqe:

Is this wolfgang press Terese's background music?
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 11:30pm Dave Mandl:

@ottovonbqe: I'm hiding the CD so she can't play it.
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 11:35pm ottovonbqe:

Hmm. So you're the anti-background music guy.
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 11:37pm pacific standard simon:

werewolf? therewolf!
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 11:38pm Droll:

otto, Stan doesn't use a bed, either. No logo is a recognizable brand, too.

  Sun. 9/1/13 11:40pm trish:

How about Mozart?
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 11:44pm Dave Mandl:

@otto: Right, I never use bed music. I'm one of a few DJs here who don't, but not the only one.
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 11:46pm Dave L.B. is RRN63:

'Dig Deep' indeed. Quite a piece.
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 11:50pm Droll:

Please tell me after 3 hours of wolf-music we'll get to hear an explanation... or at least Duran Duran.
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 11:52pm Ken From Hyde Park:

The wolf spider:
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 11:53pm pacific standard simon:

...or "The Hungry Wolf" by X.
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 11:54pm Dave Mandl:

No explanation. It was just a whim. It hit me while I was preparing my show. Pulled out two "Wolf" CDs from the "W" section, and then I thought, "I'll do an entire Wolf show." I used the FMU playlist-search function to help me.
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 11:54pm Dave Mandl:

Duran Duran is queued up.
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 11:55pm Dave Mandl:

Or cued up.
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 11:55pm pacific standard simon:

@Ken - creepy from a distance, absurd in close-up.
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 11:56pm Droll:

...or next.
Wow -- both an explanation and DD! I take back that thing I said about you.
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 11:56pm Dave L.B. is RRN63:

Oo! - are these Elks ones who have a connection to the area I'm in - around Dartmouth in New Hampshire...
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 11:57pm Dave Mandl:

What thing was that? I can still take back the Duran Duran.
  Sun. 9/1/13 11:58pm 12539:

Thanks, Dave. And good luck catching the train.
Avatar Sun. 9/1/13 11:58pm Droll:

Never mind, it was no thing.
  Sun. 9/1/13 11:59pm trish:

Great whim, Dave. Enjoyed it a lot.
Avatar Mon. 9/2/13 12:00am Dave L.B. is RRN63:

.... aaaAWOOooooOOOOoooo ....
  Mon. 9/2/13 12:01am HollyT:

Damn, I'm out 100 bucks. Fun show Dave. Nighty-night!
Avatar Mon. 9/2/13 12:01am Dave Mandl:

Night, folks. Thanks for being so cool, as always.
