An Esther Williams spectacular?
Avatar Sun. 7/7/13 7:05pm deanland:

Those opening sounds were quite reminiscent of the way it sounded as we left Yankee Stadium today, after seeing the unthinkable: Mariano blew a save. After a tremendous performance by Kuroda and one inning of wonder by Robertson. Oh, the humanity! Gary Burton, though, is soothing after so tough an afternoon.
Avatar    Sun. 7/7/13 7:06pm Monica:

Hi there, Dave E, Parq, fleep, and pacific standard simon. Yep, a big cheetah.... and Esther!

Al Kooper, of Blues Project and BS&T fame (and organ on Dylan's Just Like A Woman) wrote Short Shorts, back when he was a teenager and lived in Springfield Gardens, Queens.

Avatar    Sun. 7/7/13 8:14pm Parq:

I should add that, for a change, I am all dinnered. Mrs. Parq took over kitchen duties tonight. I was eating during the Totie, j'regret, because I had the sound turned down to eating-dinner level and did not catch most of it.

Avatar    Sun. 7/7/13 8:19pm Parq:

No, great lady, you did not at all. I'm just noting that, for once, I am not banished to the kitchen during your show.
Avatar    Sun. 7/7/13 8:20pm Parq:

Yes, Julie London and Jack Webb is one of those things I try not to think too hard about.

Avatar    Sun. 7/7/13 8:31pm Parq:

Oh, by the way, I saw the first-night preview of Damon Albarn's "Monkey; Journey to the West" last night. Well worth seeing, and hearing. Kind of amazing that it and "Tracy Jacks" came out of the same mind.

The troubled Karen was a very talented drummer, plus a wonderful singer. Richard was deeply hidden in the closet for years. Their handlers loved that people thought they were a couple, not siblings.

Richard Carpenter went through many changes after Karen's death. Some years later he got married (a cousin or some distant relative) and had many kids. He remained a producer, but stayed (stays) largely out of the limelight.

Avatar    Sun. 7/7/13 8:45pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...just from 'Invocation' it is evident that JackD. - &/or, likely - RichardC. knew their damn way around an arrangement & the recording studio. Seems to me BrainWilson woulda been pleased w/ that!...

I'm melting myself down . . .
Avatar    Sun. 7/7/13 8:46pm Monica:

Thanks, RevRab!... and yeah, right on, deanland!... pacific standard - oh hell yeah!... dale, from rock something or other...
Avatar    Sun. 7/7/13 8:46pm Parq:

I don't know much about the Carps' inner history, having spent much of my youth joining my peers in scorning them. I just remember seeing one of those late-night commercials for a compilation of that stuff, illustrated with a series of videos for their hits. The thing is, the videos were in chronological order, and the viewer literally watched the poor kid dying, getting more gaunt and wizened with each on until finally, in the vid for that one with Sneaky Pete on steel-petal, she looked outright skeletal. Chilling.

...I'm sure it was some model...
Avatar Sun. 7/7/13 8:51pm deanland:

@Parq: you might notice that there is not much written about Karen & Richard as kids. Richard via tech and music (keyboards, arranging), and Karen via music (drums, singing) managed to escape what must have been horrible in other ways. Even fame could not tame their various inner demons. What happened to Karen is tragic. Some of it was her inability to come to terms with it or to find proper help. Richard suffered, out of the limelight (no TMZ back then) and they were so beloved as a whitebread and vanilla act that they were left alone.
Avatar    Sun. 7/7/13 8:52pm Parq:

@Dale: yet right, according to the concepts of right and wrong that would be common if only WFMU ruled the world.
Avatar    Sun. 7/7/13 8:54pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Another fine show tonight, as always.

Avatar    Sun. 7/7/13 8:55pm Parq:

Try and imagine having a conversation like this thirty years from now about, say, Kate Perry or Ashee Simpson, and you get some idea of how much all this is for me to absorb.

About that Daft Punk record... we were introduced to it when The Niece showed up a few weeks ago and made us listen to "Get Lucky" real loud, several times.

Trivial, goofy... but nonetheless, it has some staying power. A total earworm.
