![]() |
![]() @YETI BOB: The Prog Rock Revival is this year! Now, more than ever! :) |
![]() |
![]() There's a group/artist called Sexy Rexy? That's wonderful. That's what they called Rex Harrison in his palmiest days. |

Ohhhhhh, I raise my fingers to the sky to gather in this iteration of a Beat Happening.
![]() |
![]() What? Sonic Boom recycled a song? Well, I never...... |
![]() |
![]() yeah, both those Spacemen 3 guys tend to revisit a lot. I got no problem with that! |
![]() |
![]() Me neither. Sonic Boom and J Spaceman are excellent recyclers. |

For some reason this tune reminds me of being 10 and sitting in the back of my parent's station wagon in the summer. I guess that's what they intended.. |
![]() |
![]() Hi, my name's Carmichael and I'm a WFMU-holic. <gazing through cigarette fog for recognition> Neon Indian gets mucho stars. |
![]() |
![]() I like that album, next one is even better... if you like that chillwave music |
![]() |
![]() Weren't we just talking about Spacemen 3? Not complaining, mind you. |
![]() |
![]() oh man, i LOVE this heatwave song!! stellar, scott! |
![]() |
![]() Greets! |
![]() |
![]() Mo! This whole album kills me. |
![]() |
![]() Hey Dave! |
![]() |
![]() @Carm: Major fan of Neon Indian -- the sun-drenched kind of washed out electronics, always good for a summer feel. Incidentally, I am also a WFMU-holic. I had no intention of quitting. |
![]() |
![]() That Gal Costa sounded suspiciously like the Bobby McFerrin/Rob Wasserman tune on Duets. Or vice versa. |
![]() |
![]() ewwww, really?? it's a Caetano Veloso tune, from around '75 |
![]() |
![]() I've only heard the Indian on FMU, so I don't have too much of a past with them. But my family DID enjoy Atlas Moves, which came on the FMU thumbdrive I got last year as a premium. |
![]() |
![]() Sorry to scare you, Scott. It was just my impression after hearing the sonic vocal harmonizing. |
![]() |
![]() hey Scott, welcome back. i liked the Field track, never heard of them. |
![]() |
![]() sweet funk |

G:
Why do I hafta have so much goddam work on Mondays??? I missed Frippification. The Lark Ascending for the electronic era. Will have to catch on archive. Yeah, I know how LTiA goes. But hearing it OVER THE AIRWAVES. Trust me, that didn't happen in the 70s, either. |
![]() |
![]() I agree with that, G. it's special when you can enjoy it with everyone else, or in a different environment. |
![]() |
![]() G, did any King Crimson make it onto the radio back then? |
![]() |
![]() id love to hear some archives of 70s hard rock radio |
![]() |
![]() In the Hall of the Mountain King. Not much else. |
![]() |
![]() Thanks Steve! The Field is a Swedish dude called Axel Willner. He was famously responsible for the 6am dance party at the FMU tent at Primavera a few years back - blog.wfmu.org... |
![]() |
![]() hot damn, looks like a great time |
![]() |
![]() Jeezus. Court of the Crimson King. Mind-riffing is flawed today. |

G:
Yes and Genesis were much bigger sellers, and had a poppy aspect to them KC programatically eschewed, so their "singles" were on some radio playlists when early/mid 70s KC never were. Someone must have played KC on a freeform show, but not on the AOR format stations that most college-age kids listened to in the 70s... You didn't expect to hear Gentle Giant weirdness either -- but it was almost a point of pride among some in the dorms to listen to stuff you would never hear on the radio. I guess we were doing our own individual or small-group freeforming... |
![]() |
![]() Jeff played that Deviation Social this morning. Getting good airplay. |
![]() |
![]() I don't recognize the Robert Wyatt...Hmmm... |
![]() |
![]() G, that is so very informative, thank you |
![]() |
![]() I was kind of prog snobby in my day. If a song played on the radio, it was too commercial. Then when a song NEVER got played, I was also mad. I recall being into Gentle Giant, Utopia, Caravan and Camel before anyone else knew who they were. |
![]() |
Mon. 6/3/13 5:25pm
Droll:
G, The 80's KC incarnation did have a pop streak, like all the other prog bands took on in the 80's. Sleepless got a 12" remix by Bob Clearmountain, but it wasn't a very good pop song so it was DOA. Genesis, Yes, and Asia were all writing real pop and trying to make chart toppers, but KC (like Rush) has a commercial curse, partially cultivated by themselves but mostly by rabid fans and unhinged haters. |
![]() |
![]() Why, hello. |
![]() |
![]() Ahoy, Stan! Welcome to the radio |
![]() |
![]() @Droll: and by the DJ media, trying to sell off Kansas and even Styx as *prog*. That's when I turned the knob way to the left, looking for freeform stations. |
![]() |
Mon. 6/3/13 5:29pm
G:
Exactly, Droll, and there are prog fans who like, or tolerate, or abhor, the 80s stuff. I'm openminded; 80s 'dinosaur' prog bands were trying to survive the punk/disco/hairband asteroid strikes by finding something that could work on some commercial level. @Carm: I 100% recognize your summary, and I knew many of us like that in the mid-later 70s... |
![]() |
![]() Now Walter Carlos, I didn't know he drove around in this part of town. I actually like this stuff, and I just said it out loud. Eventually, I'll star this song. |
![]() |
![]() this is awesome. Nicky Siano recently said on his podcast that in the 70s he'd open his sets with a side this Sonic Seasoning record... never heard it til now |
Mon. 6/3/13 5:33pm
bloopy:
Anyone watch Game of Thrones?
![]() |
![]() ha... fitting reaction to this afternoon's news. |
![]() |
![]() hah! viva äss! |
Mon. 6/3/13 5:37pm
Joe D:
HOBOKEN SUCKS!!! | |
![]() |
![]() <clicks on link re Maxwells, does spit take> |
![]() |
![]() WHAT THE FUUUUUCK?!? No Maxwell's?!? Okay, other than that steak place -- and there's one in Morris Plains so fuck them -- there's no fucking reason to ever go to Hobroken again. I hope the entire yuppie shit-hole falls into the river, but let's give our friends who still live there fair warning so they can canoe out. |
![]() |
Mon. 6/3/13 5:39pm
Droll:
"The culture in Hoboken is driven by reality TV now. A lot of the bars downtown are fighting with each other for who has the most giant TVs. That's what Hoboken nightlife has become." What's next? Live bands that are just some guy jumping up and down in front of a laptop? Oh, er, uhhh, nevermind. |
![]() |
![]() Damn, It's been quite a while since I've been to Maxwells. |
![]() |
![]() ugh. what a bummer. to be fair Hoboken has sucked for a long time |
![]() |
![]() Oh man, that ye olde Lightning Bolt show at Maxwell's was delightfully brain-smashing. |
![]() |
![]() Everything ends. Everything. Sigh. |
Mon. 6/3/13 5:47pm
moose:
saw stereolab at maxwell's and the ex with tom cora. 2 best shows of life probably
![]() |
![]() A Maxwell's highlight for me was seeing Mike Watt & The Missingmen. I love Mike Watt. |
![]() |
![]() getting the radio show shoutout while YLT & Feelies covered "Roadrunner" at Hannukah was a major personal highlight |
![]() |
![]() I would die if I saw Stereolab live. That's how much I like them. |
![]() |
![]() Ooh! Big highlight, Scott Williams! Nice! Every year I missed the YLT Hanukkah show cos I could never get my shit together in time to get tickets and then it would sell out. Maybe they'll move it to the Bell House? A bigger venue means MAYBE Wendy gets in! L'chaim and all that. |
![]() |
![]() Great show Scott!. My pseudo-ex is making me reorganize my cds to make space. She acted like she was asking me to do a chore. Always fun to me! |
![]() |
Mon. 6/3/13 5:59pm
Droll:
I've only been to Maxwell's once (because I live in Seattle), but it was for the last Maxwell's H&M in 2012, so I feel like I got a quality experience. I was riding in listener Bob's car, and we instantly found parking within 100ft of the door, so I got cheated out of that part of the experience. |
![]() |
![]() ngh - do you still listen to cds? ive been wondering what to do with mine, havent put one on in 5+ years other than to rip |
![]() |
![]() Hola~Sayonara |
![]() |
![]() Been listening to all of my media in ABC for the last five years, I'm at Xenakis right now. |
