I hereby claim this playlist in the name of Her Majesty, the Queen.
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 12:00pm listener james from westwood:

hey hey, tony and all tape hiss fans! gotta un-foul a work foul-up but will keep the hiss on in the background to keep my blood pressure normal-ish.
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 12:01pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Peace be with you.

Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 12:15pm Carmichael:

Horn hiss? Hiya Tony and peeps.
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 12:16pm Tony Coulter:

Heya, Carmichael!
Avatar Tue. 6/4/13 12:19pm DARK STAR MAN:

Hi Tony,
just dropped in to some fairly metallic metal noise!
may drop out again if buildings work does not stop!
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 12:21pm Tony Coulter:

Hey Dark Star Man! Don't worry, the construction crew will be taking their union-mandated lunch break.
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 12:21pm Rich in Washington:

Greetings Tony, Hisserati!
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 12:22pm Tony Coulter:

Hola, Richerati!
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 12:24pm fleep:

It's a chromium oxide kind day! Why no archive, Tony?
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 12:26pm Tony Coulter:

Hiya, fleep! The "Tape Hiss" shows are never archived, just my regular freeform shows.
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 12:27pm Rich in Washington:

that's the fun part of non-archived shows. Get 'em while they're fresh!
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 12:29pm fleep:

Ah. Listen now, or forever hold my ears. Got it.
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 12:29pm listener james from westwood:

appointment radio, the way it used to be.
Avatar Tue. 6/4/13 12:32pm DARK STAR MAN:

yeh Tony,
how is it some of the DJs on WFMU don't even have a playlist such as the reggae show on Sunday morning -(John Sarge).
D/O have a playlist but no track by track mp3/pop up play facility?
Surely John Sarge lets WFMU know what he is playing before the show?
eh it is 2013 with some easy software audio mix programs!
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 12:33pm Tony Coulter:

Talking of playlists, this tape on now is a bitch to accu-playlist on the fly, but I'm-a-gonna try.
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 12:35pm Rich in Washington:

this is incredible music, Tony - and, as usual - I have never heard of this guy before.
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 12:36pm Tony Coulter:

The band he's in -- Clonicos -- is really fab.
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 12:40pm fleep:

Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 12:41pm Tony Coulter:

Thanks, fleep! Yep, those are photos I took of the covers.
Avatar Tue. 6/4/13 12:45pm DARK STAR MAN:

call this music Rich!
its like listening to your bathtub and washing machine emptying of water!
flupuchtifen!
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 12:47pm Tony Coulter:

RE: "All Man Hats You" & "Subacuatic": I write 'em as I see 'em.
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 12:49pm Tony Coulter:

@ Dark Star Man: You may like Famlende Forsøk more -- but then again, maybe not.
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 12:52pm davex:

Interesting stuff, Tony, thanks for playing it!
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 12:53pm Tony Coulter:

Hey, Davex!
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 12:54pm Rich in Washington:

This is fascinating stuff.

Mangle away!
  Tue. 6/4/13 12:56pm conrad:

in Russia, man hats YOU!
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 12:58pm Rich in Washington:

The first time I ever did a Turkish/Anatolian music show, I received a call from a rather bemused Turkish man who gave me a pronunciation key over the phone of all the artists I'd just back-announced - not that it helped.
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 12:59pm Tony Coulter:

Hey Conrad! Hats off to ya....
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 1:09pm Ike:

Dark Star Man, some people can get away with any kind of laziness if they have cute accents....
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 1:10pm Tony Coulter:

Ike! Heya....
  Tue. 6/4/13 1:11pm tape trader:

Are you a International Sound Communication /80's fan ?
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 1:11pm Ike:

Hey hey hey!
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 1:15pm Tony Coulter:

@ tape trader: Don't know International Sound Communication. What be that? (Greetings, btw.)
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 1:20pm Uncle Michael:

Man, there was some dynamite stuff on while I was in the car and I'll never know which tape it was.
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 1:22pm Tony Coulter:

It was the tape I left in the car for you -- you are now under my control.
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 1:28pm Rich in Washington:

I hope the tape wasn't left in the car too long... Lost more of them that way than I care to admit.
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 1:31pm Uncle Michael:

I miss seeing wads of unspooled cassette tape from murdered tapes gasping their last by the curbside. Once a common site, now as rare as white lung disease in a southern mill town.
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 1:32pm Tony Coulter:

X-raying cassettes can produce some very interesting results -- happened to an acquaintance whose bag was x-rayed at the airport.
Avatar Tue. 6/4/13 1:32pm DARK STAR MAN:

hey Ike,
what's your point?
much better Tony! - like Chrome mix with Hawkwind - Alient Space ritual soundtrack!
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 1:37pm northguineahills:

I had a friend that did an art/sound exhibit based on found tape (found outdoors) in 2004, probably the tail end of when that would have been possible.
Avatar Tue. 6/4/13 1:38pm DARK STAR MAN:

Ike,
think I know what you are saying -
If I am a rasta dread Jamaican DJ - I can get away with being stoned immaculate and diorganised!
Avatar Tue. 6/4/13 1:41pm DARK STAR MAN:

Lovecraftian overtones Tony!
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 1:41pm Tony Coulter:

Indeed!
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 1:44pm Tony Coulter:

Norwegian could *almost* be mistaken for German at times, if not for the alien vowel sounds.
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 1:45pm still b/p:

A less common sight but an interesting changing-times one came when my place of long employment was winding down and clearing out. Threw out thousands of 3/4" videotapes and also many reels of 1" tape, but the naked 1" reels were salvaged for aluminum scrap value. Great boxes full of unspooled tape...off to the dump. A swell project an artist coulda made, though exposure to all that old deteriorating tape might not be the healthiest choice.
The low-tech method we set up to let a few reels at once unspool themselves was gallery-worthy on its own.
Avatar Tue. 6/4/13 1:46pm DARK STAR MAN:

its a little too dark for say Popol Vuh or Ashra Tempel but sounds close to German Spoken language!
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 1:47pm Tony Coulter:

Hey there, NGH and still b/p! I have fond memories of seeing tangled cassette tape hanging from trees.
Avatar Tue. 6/4/13 1:49pm DARK STAR MAN:

anyone out there ever record music audio onto video tape.
Tried it myself and got really good results - bass in particular was well extended!
  Tue. 6/4/13 1:52pm tape trader:

Go to musical ensemble in Wikipedia & type in Famlende Forsok.
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 1:54pm Uncle Michael:

DSM, right before the popularity (?!) of DAT, I traded a fair amount of Grateful Dead on VHS-Hifi.
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 1:55pm Tony Coulter:

@ tape trader: Will do during the next long track. Are they an offshoot of FF?
Avatar Tue. 6/4/13 1:56pm DARK STAR MAN:

yeh man!
  Tue. 6/4/13 1:58pm tape trader:

no
Avatar Tue. 6/4/13 1:59pm DARK STAR MAN:

it seems Famlende Forsøk say The Third Ear Band
are a major influence on their music!
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 2:02pm Tony Coulter:

@ tape trader: Aha ! A cassette compilation series -- haven't heard them (obviously!)
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 2:05pm Rich in Washington:

@DARK STAR MAN: I used to use a hi-fi VCR as a means to record radio programs, using the timer feature. I found the sound quality as good as - if not better - than standard cassettes.
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 2:13pm Tony Coulter:

@ tape trader: I take it you would recommend the "International Sound Communication" series -- I will seek it out. I discovered Famlende Forsøk via their LP, not from any comps (how I came across the LP I don't remember).
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 2:19pm davex:

Is church over now?
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 2:20pm Tony Coulter:

Yes -- just don't forget to tithe on your way out.
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 2:20pm Uncle Michael:

The tithe hat binds.
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 2:21pm davex:

I'm digging deep for a button or two.
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 2:21pm Tony Coulter:

Ha!
  Tue. 6/4/13 2:23pm tape trader:

I am not familar with this series. Nevertheless in the 70's thru CLE magazine this was a fun way to exchange music/art/ photos/etc..
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 2:25pm still b/p:

The binding discomfort is eased if you include some nice pad tithe.
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 2:27pm davex:

Honk honk!
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 2:28pm Ike:

@Uncle M.@1:31, I recently spotted the now-rare sight of a discarded VHS tape on the curb on my block, but no audio cassettes. Although my car is full of them.
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 2:29pm Tony Coulter:

@ tape trader: I discovered a lot of great music through similar series, like "Insane Music for Insane People, " "Sensationnel," "Bad Alchemy," etc. It *was* a fun way find out about music and get nice artwork at the same time!
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 2:30pm Tony Coulter:

"TO find out....."
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 2:33pm Tony Coulter:

@ Ike: VHS tapes are hip in Portland. All the cool kids collect them....
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 2:37pm Rich in Washington:

I guess someone could produce a six hour long album on VHS, if they really wanted to.
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 2:38pm listener james from westwood:

been stomping out work fires with both feet but been digging the oxide, tony!
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 2:39pm Rich in Washington:

As of just a few years ago, the man pseudonymously known as Dr. Zomb recorded airchecks of his own show on hi-fi VHS tape. He says he has tapes going back decades.
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 2:40pm davex:

And now the Hansa national anthem.
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 2:41pm Tony Coulter:

@ Listener James from Westwood: Glad to hear it! Stomp away, but be careful not to sing your toes.
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 2:42pm northguineahills:

Man, this SHiT shit is fun!
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 2:44pm Tony Coulter:

I use to record FMU airchecks on to cassettes. I had years worth of them and was going to dump them before moving out west, but Ken actually asked me to give them to the station. They are currently gathering dust somewhere at HQ central.
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 2:45pm davex:

Ella?
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 2:45pm davex:

Ella!
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 2:46pm Tony Coulter:

@ Listener James: er, I meant "singe your toes" -- but singing toes are a nice idea too.
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 2:48pm listener james from westwood:

even my toes were singing along to that bubblegum track!
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 2:49pm Rich in Washington:

I still record airchecks of my show at home, from terrestrial radio, despite the station doing auto-archiving now. The sound quality's inferior and subject to stupid server related glitches.
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 2:50pm Tony Coulter:

@ davex: Uncredited Ella -- guess that's what they mean by scrap material!
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 2:51pm davex:

And Ella was still very much around at the time. I suppose she probably never had a chance to hear Famlende Forsøk though.
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 2:52pm Tony Coulter:

Maybe that was them jamming together.
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 2:54pm davex:

Haha, she (and whatever band that was originally) had great consistency over decades.
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 2:54pm Tony Coulter:

I jest, of course. I think FF were sort of treating it like a found object and (minimally) messing with it.
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 2:55pm davex:

Another uncredited credit goes to the Chick Webb Orchestra - wasn't hard to find.
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 2:56pm davex:

Yes, it was surprising how minimally they changed the track. I wasn't at first even expecting Ella to come on after the long instrumental.
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 2:58pm northguineahills:

Thanks Tony, it was a fun set!
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 2:59pm Rich in Washington:

thanks Tony, for another wonderful show! Cool stuff, completely unknown to me.
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 2:59pm Tony Coulter:

Thanks for showing up, everybody! I'll be back next week all regular and freeform-ish.
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 3:00pm listener james from westwood:

agree w/ rich! always a treasure hunt. thanks! now back to the fires. (ouch!)
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 3:00pm davex:

Thanks, Tony! I didn't even notice the hissing.
