Eh is it Tuesday again today?
Eh Sick Dick? what like Peter and the Test Tube Babies or something?
Avatar    Tue. 5/7/13 11:21am Carmichael:

Good morning Tony. Waiting patiently for the hiss.
Avatar Tue. 5/7/13 11:51am Tony Coulter:

Hey there, Carmichael and Sid! Back in a bit....
Avatar    Tue. 5/7/13 11:55am Rich in Washington:

I am excited to hear Sick Dick and the Volkswagons.
I mean I am excited to hear another entertaining Tape Hiss, it's just ever since I heard that band name, I've alwways wanted to hear them.
Avatar    Tue. 5/7/13 11:55am Rich in Washington:

Hola, Senor Tony, Carmichael, Sid, everyone in hiss listener land.
Avatar Tue. 5/7/13 11:56am Tony Coulter:

Ahoy, Rich!
Avatar Tue. 5/7/13 12:01pm SID TUBBY:

Heya, Sid!
Ahoy, Doug!
Avatar    Tue. 5/7/13 12:03pm Uncle Michael:

Hello everybody from everywhere.
Avatar    Tue. 5/7/13 12:04pm Rich in Washington:

Unfortunately, recent changes to my work make it difficult to hang out here and comment often but I can still listen with limited interruptions, so there's that.
Avatar Tue. 5/7/13 12:06pm Tony Coulter:

Heya, Uncle Mikey!
Avatar Tue. 5/7/13 12:09pm Tony Coulter:

@ Doug: PS: "Douggles" rhymes with "Snuggles."
  Tue. 5/7/13 12:12pm MrFab:

Howdy, Tony, and fellow Coulter-ites. I hear ya, Rich: sometimes I can't even listen to this show. Wish TapeHiss was archived, that Residents-y weirdo pop special from a couple weeks ago looks great.
Avatar    Tue. 5/7/13 12:13pm Carmichael:

Sick Dick & the Volkswagens were a fictional band in Thomas Pynchon's The Crying of Lot 49.
Avatar    Tue. 5/7/13 12:13pm duke:

Hi Hissers
Avatar Tue. 5/7/13 12:14pm Tony Coulter:

Hey MrFab! I too wish "Tape Hiss" could be archived....
Avatar Tue. 5/7/13 12:15pm Tony Coulter:

Hey there, Duke!

@ Carmichael: Didn't know about the Pynchon connection!
Avatar    Tue. 5/7/13 12:16pm Rich in Washington:

Re: Pynchon: me neither. I just know Sick Dick (...) was a band name friends and I used to joke about all the time. It just stuck.
Avatar Tue. 5/7/13 12:22pm SID TUBBY:

got nurse with wound/faust feel about them and their music!
Avatar Tue. 5/7/13 12:23pm Jeff Golick:

Re: Pynchon II: as it happens, tomorrow, 8 May, is "Pynchon in Public Day," apparently -- www.pynchoninpublic.com... Just fyi.
Avatar Tue. 5/7/13 12:24pm Tony Coulter:

Hiya, Jeff G!
Avatar Tue. 5/7/13 12:24pm Jeff Golick:

Hellooooo!
Avatar    Tue. 5/7/13 12:25pm Carmichael:

That book was required reading for my undergraduate degree. Lots of other hippie/music references, as it was written in the late 60s/early 70s.
Avatar Tue. 5/7/13 12:25pm Tony Coulter:

@ Sid: And a bit of the Residents too -- like so many of my fave '80s bands.
Avatar Tue. 5/7/13 12:25pm SID TUBBY:

read some of his Gravity' s Rainbow a few weeks back!
Good stuff and in the DFWallace Infinite Jest kind of category!
Avatar    Tue. 5/7/13 12:26pm Uncle Michael:

Got a real Homer Flynn vibe going on here...
  Tue. 5/7/13 12:28pm Charlene Darling:

Gargoyle Mechanique rules!
Avatar Tue. 5/7/13 12:29pm Tony Coulter:

Heya, Charlene!!
Avatar    Tue. 5/7/13 12:30pm Uncle Michael:

Back shortly...
  Tue. 5/7/13 12:32pm Charlene Darling:

I took a day off to pack my stuff because i'm moving out tomorrow, its hard and messy but this also means i finally get to listen to one of your "Tape Hiss" show, NICE STUFF !
Avatar Tue. 5/7/13 12:33pm Tony Coulter:

Thanks, Charlene! Glad you like....
Avatar Tue. 5/7/13 12:35pm Tony Coulter:

Another Gargoyle Mechanique tape is coming up next....
Avatar Tue. 5/7/13 12:42pm Tony Coulter:

Talking of the Residents, can anyone suggest additions to this list of Residents-influenced acts I put up on Rate Your Music: rateyourmusic.com...
Avatar Tue. 5/7/13 12:49pm Tony Coulter:

This Gargoyle Mechanique track has a a definite no wave flavor, methinks....

Thought you'd turn up, Turnip! Gratings!
Avatar    Tue. 5/7/13 1:11pm Uncle Michael:

@Tony: Steve Reich? Don Van Vliet?
  Tue. 5/7/13 1:12pm MrFab:

Just checked my blog for old reviews in which I compare bands to the Residents:
- The Chewers
- Philip Stranger
- Potato aka Jerome Van Dinkle
- The Invented Thing Quartet
- X Black Sheep
- Ralph Carney
- Thiaz Itch
- Už Jsme Doma
- The Hathaway Family Plot
- Duo Inmortales
Avatar Tue. 5/7/13 1:13pm Tony Coulter:

Thanks, Fab!! Don't know most of those -- I'll have to look 'em up....
Avatar Tue. 5/7/13 1:14pm Tony Coulter:

And thanks too, Uncle Michael!
Avatar Tue. 5/7/13 1:15pm northguineahills:

Sounds like Les Georges Leningrads (sp?) might have sampled the opening part of Interference.
Avatar Tue. 5/7/13 1:16pm Tony Coulter:

Really?!? Interesting. (Greets, NGH!)
Avatar    Tue. 5/7/13 1:22pm Uncle Michael:

Ray Harryhausen is gone.
Avatar    Tue. 5/7/13 1:24pm Rich in Washington:

@Uncle Michael: No!!!
Avatar    Tue. 5/7/13 1:25pm Rich in Washington:

He has de-animated
Avatar    Tue. 5/7/13 1:26pm Rich in Washington:

@MrFab: I remember getting lots of label catalogs in the early/mid 80s and tons of bands had press blurbs comparing them to The Residents.
Avatar    Tue. 5/7/13 1:28pm Rich in Washington:

Cool lists, both of youse.
I recently picked up that Cromagnon reissue on Jackpot. AT Jackpot, actually.
Avatar    Tue. 5/7/13 1:30pm Rich in Washington:

(going through your Sounds Residential list).
Say Tony. Is it true that Freshly Wrapped Candies contains an ex-Resident? Seems like I read it somewhere.
Avatar Tue. 5/7/13 1:31pm Tony Coulter:

@ Rich: Jackpot is kind of a weird reissue label, as they mostly reissue things that have already been reissued and are barely out of print. Not sure about the Freshly Wrapped Resident -- I've heard that too, but....
Avatar Tue. 5/7/13 1:32pm Tony Coulter:

With somewhat better vocals, Sick Dick could have been big, I think (subculturally speaking, of course).
Avatar    Tue. 5/7/13 1:34pm Rich in Washington:

I have this weird, maybe not entirely rational dislike for Jackpot. I think that's the one time I've ever bought anything in their store.
Avatar Tue. 5/7/13 1:36pm Tony Coulter:

They're OK, but they feel a bit like a fake record store -- kind of boutique-y.
  Tue. 5/7/13 1:39pm MrFab:

Don't know how old Jackpot is, but all the new record stores seem boutique-y. May be the way they have to do it now in this vinyl-as-cool-fashion-object age we're a-livin' in.
Avatar Tue. 5/7/13 1:47pm Tony Coulter:

Not sure how old Jackpot is, but they frequently get name-dropped as Portland's best record store -- which is ridiculous.
Avatar    Tue. 5/7/13 1:47pm Rich in Washington:

There are so many incredible record stores in Portland. Jackpot is the most over-rated and overpriced.
Predictably, it was the only Portland store mentioned in Rolling Stone's article on the best record stores in the US.
Avatar    Tue. 5/7/13 1:48pm Rich in Washington:

It's sort of a store for dudes that just got into vinyl records and want a 40 dollar reissue to play on their 1,000 turntable.
Avatar Tue. 5/7/13 1:49pm Tony Coulter:

Tops for me in Portland are Exiled, Crossroads, and Little Axe.
Avatar    Tue. 5/7/13 1:53pm Rich in Washington:

yep. I dig those, too. Those and Clinton Street.
I love Boom Wow for 45s and for their old-timey record love vibe.
Avatar Tue. 5/7/13 1:58pm Tony Coulter:

Coming up next: a sort of mystery tape, from 1980, *probably* by a group called Arcane.
Avatar Tue. 5/7/13 2:06pm northguineahills:

Digging this Arcane.
Avatar Tue. 5/7/13 2:08pm Tony Coulter:

Glad to hear it, NGH! I really wish I could find out something about them. The cover is hand-made, and the cassette has no info at all other than track titles. And the person I bought it from couldn't remember anything about the tape. Get in touch, Arcane (or whoever you are)!
Avatar Tue. 5/7/13 2:12pm Tony Coulter:

By the way, I included a track from this cassette in an old BotB post: blog.wfmu.org... . You can see the cover there.
Avatar Tue. 5/7/13 2:14pm Tony Coulter:

... and the label.
Avatar Tue. 5/7/13 2:23pm Tony Coulter:

To me Arcane sounds a wee bit like early Decayes. Wonder if there could possibly be any connection.
Avatar    Tue. 5/7/13 2:39pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

digging.
Avatar Tue. 5/7/13 2:44pm Tony Coulter:

Something just occurred to me: one of the main guys in the Decayes is named Ron Kane = R. Kane = Arcane?!? Maybe!
Avatar Tue. 5/7/13 2:46pm Tony Coulter:

The Decayes: www.discogs.com...
Avatar Tue. 5/7/13 2:49pm northguineahills:

Sounded like Steven Wright w/ a cold.
Avatar Tue. 5/7/13 2:51pm Doug Schulkind:

Hurray for Bart! Or should I say yodel-ee-yoo-hoo for Bart!
Avatar Tue. 5/7/13 2:57pm Doug Schulkind:

Bart, who ages ago hosted Wreck This Mess on WFMU (and now in Amsterdam) has just published a second book on yodeling called "Yodel in Hi-Fi: Kitsch Folk to Modern Electronica"
Avatar    Tue. 5/7/13 2:57pm Rich in Washington:

thanks for making tape hisses for us today, Tony!
Avatar Tue. 5/7/13 2:57pm Tony Coulter:

Thanks for showing up everybody -- see you next week.
