The obsessive compulsive in me loved the SNL BOC/Cowbell sketch (since I always found the cowbell in that song distracting) but the anal retentive in me found that the Bruce Dickensen mistake almost ruined it.
Avatar    Tue. 4/2/13 12:10pm listener james from westwood:

i can get behind this cause, but not too close behind it.
Avatar    Tue. 4/2/13 12:10pm Tony Coulter:

Hey there, fleep!
Avatar    Tue. 4/2/13 12:10pm Rich in Washington:

This track sounds like something my wife's uncle would do at a karaoke party.
Avatar    Tue. 4/2/13 12:12pm Ike:

For a moment, I thought that might have been a real (and really incompetent) old radio ad for a French restaurant, and I wondered if it was Wilmington, DE, or the NC one, or some other Wilmington.
Avatar    Tue. 4/2/13 12:12pm Tony Coulter:

Hey there, Ike! It is a real ad, just with something added at the end.
Avatar    Tue. 4/2/13 12:13pm glenn:

didn't buffalo bill reside in wilmington, if i remember my silence of the lambs correctly?

Oh wow, that's funny. I was right the first time.

Hiya, PS Simon!
Avatar    Tue. 4/2/13 12:49pm pacific standard simon:

It's good to hear music I don't know, and it's not because it's really recent (if you can follow my wack syntax).
Avatar    Tue. 4/2/13 12:50pm Tony Coulter:

Gotcha! There's so much great music that never got heard first time around.
Avatar    Tue. 4/2/13 12:52pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

@glenn: only in archive form. Like golden little mummies, embalmed for display. But new material under the human name is coming...
Avatar    Tue. 4/2/13 12:55pm pacific standard simon:

Today's lunch special is lamb and lentil stew with crusty bread for dipping.
Avatar    Tue. 4/2/13 12:55pm glenn:

mmmm. little golden mummies. like egyptian dim sum.

J.J. Cale brings back memories -- digging through used record bins, finding treasures...
Avatar    Tue. 4/2/13 1:19pm Tony Coulter:

Digging through used-record bins is still my principle form of exercise. At least there are a lot of 'em out here in Portland.
Avatar    Tue. 4/2/13 1:19pm pacific standard simon:

Smoke "Golden Mummies"! They're miiild!
Avatar    Tue. 4/2/13 1:19pm glenn:

baseball, eh. spacing.ca...
Avatar    Tue. 4/2/13 1:22pm Rich in Washington:

Careful Tony! You could get NW Crate-Digger's Lung, a local fungal infection of the respiratory tract, especially prevalent in coastal thrift stores.
Avatar    Tue. 4/2/13 1:23pm pacific standard simon:

@Tony - I'm about to move to the Seattle area, and I'll be heading down to Portland when I want to root through the used and remaindered books at Powell's.
Avatar    Tue. 4/2/13 1:27pm Tony Coulter:

Yeah, Powell's is great. There are also lots of other good used book stores here -- smaller, but still good. Sort of like the bookstores that used to be on Fourth Ave. in NYC, if anybody remembers those.
Avatar    Tue. 4/2/13 1:28pm pacific standard simon:

@glenn - bookmarked your link for later reading. It always seemed odd that Toronto didn't have a major league team until the '70s.
Avatar    Tue. 4/2/13 1:29pm Tony Coulter:

@ Rich: These days I pull back presto when I get a whiff of mold. 'T'aint worth it.
Avatar    Tue. 4/2/13 1:29pm listener james from westwood:

rich, i think ken freedman ascribes the post-record fair plague that descends on the station to the spores that en masse digging at the metro pavilion stirs up!
Avatar    Tue. 4/2/13 1:33pm Tony Coulter:

Even worse than mold is the ink used by some of those DVD companies that specialize in cheapo, out-of-copyright films. Damn things give me an instant headache. Alpha Video seems particularly noxious.
  Tue. 4/2/13 1:36pm from Quebec:

hi Tony, are you playing this Garfield at the "right" speed? This was a big radio hit in Canada back in the day, but I don't remember it sounding like this ...
Avatar    Tue. 4/2/13 1:37pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

ooh, 1970s-era Capricorn label... Need to dig out my old White Witch LPs now... [very prone to unintended suggestion]
Avatar    Tue. 4/2/13 1:37pm pacific standard simon:

Well, if the film is out of copyright, then it should be available at The Internet Archive -- and there you go.
Avatar    Tue. 4/2/13 1:38pm Tony Coulter:

@ from Quebec: Yes! I am playing it at the right speed. Either my turntable is acting up, or they had a special slowed-down mix to make the singer sound more manly.
Avatar    Tue. 4/2/13 1:41pm Tony Coulter:

He does have Geddy Lee/ David Surkamp–like vocals, though.
Avatar    Tue. 4/2/13 1:41pm pacific standard simon:

The "special slowed-down mix" explanation sounds unlikely, given the popularity of Rush.
Avatar    Tue. 4/2/13 1:42pm pacific standard simon:

Ooh.. on the same page....
Avatar    Tue. 4/2/13 1:46pm Uncle Michael:

Retirement can't come too soon.
  Tue. 4/2/13 1:46pm from Quebec:

very odd. I remember it much slower and drawn out. But then I don't think I've heard this song since 1977, so it's a distant memory. I may actually have the album. will have to dig it out.
Avatar    Tue. 4/2/13 1:48pm Tony Coulter:

Here it is on youtube: www.youtube.com...
Avatar    Tue. 4/2/13 1:49pm Tony Coulter:

... sounding the same.
Avatar    Tue. 4/2/13 1:49pm pacific standard simon:

Bad news for Uncle Michael -- Mrs. Marty Krofft (Christa Speck), Playmate of The Year 1962, left us the other day.
Avatar    Tue. 4/2/13 1:50pm Uncle Michael:

We were all gathered around her at the end. She looked horrified. Even Witchypoo was moved.
Avatar    Tue. 4/2/13 1:51pm pacific standard simon:

...and I know what you mean about retirement.
Avatar    Tue. 4/2/13 1:53pm pacific standard simon:

A tragic sky-diving accident!
Avatar    Tue. 4/2/13 1:55pm glenn:

Glory be.
Avatar    Tue. 4/2/13 1:59pm Rich in Washington:

Jesus Franco passed away today, too.
Avatar    Tue. 4/2/13 2:00pm pacific standard simon:

Holy guacamole!
Avatar    Tue. 4/2/13 2:01pm glenn:

her turn-ons were jack benny.
Avatar    Tue. 4/2/13 2:01pm Uncle Michael:

I love the lesbos vampyros soundtrack.
Avatar    Tue. 4/2/13 2:01pm Tony Coulter:

@ Rich: Oh no -- not Jess Franco! Lesbian vampirism will never be the same.
Avatar    Tue. 4/2/13 2:02pm Rich in Washington:

I know! The only consolation is that lots of his movies have been showing up on Netflix lately.
He died just a little over a year past Lina Romay
Avatar    Tue. 4/2/13 2:17pm Uncle Michael:

I'm a Fat Mattress II guy.
Avatar    Tue. 4/2/13 2:18pm Tony Coulter:

I like 'em both -- better than Hendrix (don't tell anybody I said that).
Avatar    Tue. 4/2/13 2:19pm pacific standard simon:

The great thing about Fat Mattress is that Noel quit ruining the continuity on Jimi Hendrix albums.
Avatar    Tue. 4/2/13 2:24pm Uncle Michael:

I just posted that to be a smartass.
Avatar    Tue. 4/2/13 2:26pm Tony Coulter:

I'm more than OK with most of the '60s rock icons, but I've never liked Hendrix much -- or Bob Dylan, for that matter.
Avatar    Tue. 4/2/13 2:27pm duke:

wimple winch is a great band name, although I read wimple wrench at first glance. I think that's an even better name,
Avatar    Tue. 4/2/13 2:28pm Tony Coulter:

Hiya, Duke!
Avatar    Tue. 4/2/13 2:28pm listener james from westwood:

i read it as wimple wench myself!
  Tue. 4/2/13 2:29pm from Quebec:

just checked ... the song (and the hit) was Private Affair, from the same Garfield album. definitely long and drawn out (not to mention cringe-inducing).
Avatar    Tue. 4/2/13 2:29pm pacific standard simon:

That's OK, Tony -- I don't need everybody to like the same music I like. And I especially like Hendrix covering Dylan. ;)
Avatar    Tue. 4/2/13 2:30pm Tony Coulter:

@ Duke & Listener James: At least you didn't read it as Nipple Wrench.
Avatar    Tue. 4/2/13 2:31pm northguineahills:

Forgot to check in.
Avatar    Tue. 4/2/13 2:31pm duke:

Nipple Wrench is an even better band name
Avatar    Tue. 4/2/13 2:32pm Tony Coulter:

A belated heya to you, NGH!
Avatar    Tue. 4/2/13 2:33pm Tony Coulter:

@ from Quebec: Aha! That explains it. I had trouble imagining the song I played being a big hit.
Avatar    Tue. 4/2/13 2:34pm Doug Schulkind:

I've been listening and lurking today, Tony. Trying to hear you while cobbling together my show for tonight.
Avatar    Tue. 4/2/13 2:34pm Uncle Michael:

Nipple Winch is even better still.
Avatar    Tue. 4/2/13 2:35pm Uncle Michael:

Are you cobbling or tinkering..or maybe bodging? Let's be clear, here.
Avatar    Tue. 4/2/13 2:36pm pacific standard simon:

It's a sausage party in here.
Avatar    Tue. 4/2/13 2:37pm northguineahills:

I tripped into Joe's set, and it was kickass. Then about an hour ago, I realized it was Tuesday.
Avatar    Tue. 4/2/13 2:38pm Doug Schulkind:

Definitely not tinkling. Well, maybe a little.
Avatar    Tue. 4/2/13 2:39pm pacific standard simon:

Once you get to a certain age, you're always tinkling.
Avatar    Tue. 4/2/13 2:39pm Uncle Michael:

I've been enjoying the Johnnie Ray on the stream. Is that a recent addition, Doug?
Avatar    Tue. 4/2/13 2:53pm pacific standard simon:

Sadly, Doug, I will be making the sound of the sawing logs at the time your show is on.
Avatar    Tue. 4/2/13 2:53pm Doug Schulkind:

@pacific standard simon
OK, then I'll just play it LOUDER.
Avatar    Tue. 4/2/13 2:54pm Doug Schulkind:
