Sun. 3/24/13 9:03pm
Dave Mandl:
Evening, everyone. |
![]() |
Sun. 3/24/13 9:03pm
doca:
hi dave m., is this new steve coleman? |
![]() |
Sun. 3/24/13 9:04pm
Dave Mandl:
Hey Doca. Yes indeed. |
![]() |
Sun. 3/24/13 9:06pm
doca:
cool, i've liked it. great interplay between the bass and the reeds, as usual on his works. |
![]() |
Sun. 3/24/13 9:07pm
Dave Mandl:
Yup, agreed. Very tight, as they used to say. |
![]() |
![]() Hey Dave! I'm glad I'm home and doing some computer work so I can tune in. Happy Sunday to you. |
![]() |
Sun. 3/24/13 9:09pm
doca:
what i like about contemporary jazz in general is that's like some sort of long argument (both a discussion and the exposition of an idea) and how the listener MUST have attention so to follow it and enjoy. even when the piece is not particularly difficult it always demands an intense listening. |
![]() |
Sun. 3/24/13 9:10pm
Dave Mandl:
Hola, Wendy. Welcome back! |
![]() |
![]() Hey, thanks for the head's-up on Deux Filles re-release. If you play a song, I'm curious which one you pick. |
![]() |
Sun. 3/24/13 9:14pm
Dave Mandl:
@BDR: Sure. I plan to play something from it. Not exactly sure which track, though. |
![]() |
Sun. 3/24/13 9:14pm
Dave Mandl:
@doca: Agreed. That Steve Coleman stuff moves fast. You've got to keep up. |
![]() |
![]() - a couple favorite Zappa zaps : ...'Jazz isn't dead. It just smells funny'... ...'The manner in which Americans ''consume'' music has a lot to do with leaving it on their coffee tables, or using it as wallpaper for their lifestyle'... |
![]() |
Sun. 3/24/13 9:17pm
Dave Mandl:
Good thing I don't have a lifestyle. |
![]() |
![]() June? Ritual? Mysterious titles? Not hard. Le secret du printemps. |
![]() |
![]() I have lifestyle paint for that. |
![]() |
Sun. 3/24/13 9:31pm
Dave Mandl:
@G: You're smarter than me. |
![]() |
![]() - Yeah - what I got from that Zappa is that for some of us Music is our very Center, not our peripheral Wallpaper (...& if it is, we call it 'Ambient') - Wynton Marsalis emphasizes that Jazz is all about actually Listening to Each Other - Cage makes point that How We Listen - which is what 'audition' really means - is (@ least?) as important as the What... ...There's the Painting, the Frame, the Room, the Museum~Architecture, the Community... ...Somewhere @ wfmu.org (Program header?) someone wrote that 'to God all Music is Crap' - but I dunno - I like to think of Shiva or Sarasvati digging it- because I don't have the discipline to Meditate! In Africa - Church is Dance... |
![]() |
Sun. 3/24/13 9:34pm
Droll:
Guru Guru is certainly not crap - and a fun surprise! |
![]() |
![]() "Not hard." is what you say before you give the answer to an Old Irish riddle. I was really just joking. Unusual for me, I know... |
![]() |
Sun. 3/24/13 9:40pm
Dave Mandl:
@G: I don't think it is Le Secret de Printemps, but what I know? My french is rotten. |
![]() |
![]() “Why is it so difficult for so many people to listen? Why do they start talking when there is something to hear? Do they have their ears not on the sides of their heads but situated inside their mouths so that when they hear something their first impulse is to start talking? The situation should be more normal, don’t you think?” this is attributed to John Cage, but I remember Roland Kirk saying it. |
![]() |
![]() ...Well - we'll see what kind of dreams FMU indices tonight - !... - America is a Cancer - 4th of July - even our stuffed animals have stuffed animals. Damned right we SentiMental. |
![]() |
Sun. 3/24/13 9:45pm
Droll:
I forgot who said that -- I was trying to tell him something and he kept interrupting. |
![]() |
![]() ...well - lemme say this about that - !!!... - Much ZenLaughter loitering around FMU Comments... |
![]() |
Sun. 3/24/13 9:46pm
ottovonbqe:
I went to see a string quartet last night and persons both in front and in back of me were texting / fbooking the entire time. |
![]() |
![]() If it's a ritual involving June and one can't puzzle it out, maybe it's not Le Sacre du Printemps but Le Secret du Printemps. I'm done footnoting, though :) |
![]() |
![]() Ha, I was having one of those "Is is WFMU, or is it broken?" moments for that whole song! |
![]() |
![]() @otto: You coulda told 'em it wasn't audience participation percussion section night. |
![]() |
Sun. 3/24/13 9:50pm
ottovonbqe:
It's funny, the one guy was banging out his texts so furiously, I think he thought it was. |
![]() |
![]() A home page saying I'd like to see in the rotation is, "Go ahead, get your radio fixed. See if it does any good." |
![]() |
![]() They did seem to freshen up the homepage slogan rotation right around marathon time, right Pete? |
Sun. 3/24/13 9:52pm
P-90:
Hi Dave! So the CD player created a kind of random cut & paste remix of the track? Somewhere John Cage is smiling.
![]() |
![]() I don't know. I don't think I have noticed one way or another. |
![]() |
Sun. 3/24/13 9:53pm
Droll:
Pete, Send that to ScottW - I had the same experience but have learned to trust FMU that even if it were an accident originally, it isn't after a while. |
![]() |
![]() I have also listened to the noise of a radio station not coming in for an extended period of time without realizing it was not WFMU. |
![]() |
![]() More than once. |
![]() |
![]() Yes, they added a lot of new slogans recently, and retired some of the old ones... |
![]() |
![]() Like your Assaultasaur doca! ...I think this fellow Hewitt & his band have heard of Coltrane too - which means I think it's tasty... |
![]() |
Sun. 3/24/13 9:55pm
Dave Mandl:
Hey P-90, Pete, Otto. |
![]() |
![]() Love is hot. Truth is molten. Greetings. |
![]() |
![]() Okay- I should sleep to this? Music is probably like dreams in that it takes the sounds of life - whatever they may be - & tries to make aesthetic patterns w/ them - the way dreams help process our waking experience... |
![]() |
![]() I guess this is Orwell-based? |
![]() |
![]() Now that's a legal I.D. |
![]() |
Sun. 3/24/13 10:04pm
Dave Mandl:
@G: I guess, but it sounded more like "1984." |
![]() |
Sun. 3/24/13 10:04pm
Dave Mandl:
@UM: Completely legal. |
![]() |
![]() Concise. |
Sun. 3/24/13 10:05pm
P-90:
@Pete: The same thing happened to me once. The tuner wasn't set right, and I was listening to one of the nearby stations fading in and out with static and all the trimmings. I thought it was the just the Cosmic Cowboy or something...
![]() |
![]() I was thinking Cage for that bit of dead air just now, yeah. - When everybody was doing Kevin Ayers Tributes - one DJ's Playlist wan't updating - & after a moment I thot 'Oh! - Stupid! - It's like a moment of Playlist Standstill - like a Moment of Silence - DJ-intentional.' & then I thot no it wasn't intentional - & now I'm not certain - but it was a Moment of Playlist Standstill for Kevin Ayers either way. |
![]() |
Sun. 3/24/13 10:06pm
Dave Mandl:
@UM: Trying not to disturb the mood. |
![]() |
![]() Jolly Good! |
![]() |
Sun. 3/24/13 10:07pm
Dave Mandl:
@FCC: Whew. |
![]() |
![]() Like: Kevin Ayers' Playlist is now Finite. They are all Finite. |
![]() |
![]() - North New England - Kissed by sunlight - then overcast static on on the radio is listening to clouds standing here I am inside the sky - David Lewis Basso, 20th Feb., 2012 |

doca:
two guys who are not really koreans, but two white men dressed as koreans. |
![]() |
![]() ...only one 'on' of course... |
![]() |
Sun. 3/24/13 10:18pm
Dave Mandl:
@doca: Haha. Could be. |
![]() |
![]() Who was the FMU DJ who told about that Artist who did this whole long WorldMusic Travelogue Doc thing that was actually all stuff he made up - only says it in fine print if you look carefully?... |
Sun. 3/24/13 10:19pm
P-90:
Melodious AND slightly disturbing.
Sun. 3/24/13 10:20pm
sweet cheri:
hey dave, thnx very much for the tunes tonight!!
![]() |
Sun. 3/24/13 10:20pm
Dave Mandl:
@P-90: The lyrics probably disturbed some people at the time (19th century). |
![]() |
Sun. 3/24/13 10:21pm
Dave Mandl:
Bonjour, cheri. |
![]() |
![]() I sense that we're into the 2%. |
![]() |
![]() ...Texting @ String Quartet is NOT @ ALL like Commenting to Music... |
![]() |
Sun. 3/24/13 10:26pm
Dave Mandl:
@UM: Yeah, hang in there. |
![]() |
![]() I love it. |
![]() |
![]() ...I won't tell anybody if it hits 3% if you won't... |
![]() |
Sun. 3/24/13 10:29pm
Dave Mandl:
@UM: The Ferdinand Richard LP that comes from is just unbelievably great. If you see a copy grab it. |
![]() |
![]() I'll be seeking out that Celluloid comp. |
![]() |
Sun. 3/24/13 10:29pm
Dave Mandl:
@RR: All percentages approximate. |
![]() |
![]() Top tip, DM, thanks. |
![]() |
Sun. 3/24/13 10:32pm
Dave Mandl:
@UM: When that record came out (early '80s) I had no idea when it was recorded. Could have been '60s, '70s. A very unusual sound for a rock record. |
![]() |
![]() Is that the "En Forme" album? |
![]() |
![]() 2% is one in 50 tunes - ? -ignoring tune length...& distribution over Shows (dif. weeks) - & def. of 'Rock'n'Roll' (dif. from 'Rock' - starting w/ say Dylan lyrics & Who amps - ?)...Program blurbs all so Sarky anyhow... |
![]() |
Sun. 3/24/13 10:34pm
Dave Mandl:
That blurb must be 10 years old. I've been too lazy to change it. |
![]() |
![]() 300 /10800 ( you played 3 seconds of Small faces == rock'n'roll ) ina 3 hour show == 10800 seconds is about 0.028 % if my calculations are correct ..., |
![]() |
Sun. 3/24/13 10:36pm
Dave Mandl:
So no RnR for, what, the next 8 shows? |
![]() |
![]() Some blurbs can take years to develop in subterranean caverns before achieving their full taste and aroma. |
![]() |
![]() good one Dave ! and your show always great !!! hehe well done !!! |
![]() |
![]() I have that Mojo comp. Should subscribe again. - Now we into WorldRawk - ! I loves 60's Punk. |
![]() |
![]() Boerenrock rocks. |
![]() |
![]() Yes! Truly amazing how much 60's Punk there is - ! Freakin' Baby Boom - ! : www.beyondthebeatgeneration.com Mojo has CD's in bookstores too - it's the bookstores that are gone... |
![]() |
Sun. 3/24/13 10:46pm
Dave Mandl:
So the CDs are available by themselves? That's good. |
Sun. 3/24/13 10:48pm
P-90:
Mojo's CDs rock! | |
![]() |
![]() There's at least one location that I know of that has all the Mojos collected in one place. |
![]() |
![]() I mean the Mojo CDs come w/ the Mag in stores too (last I knew) - not just by subscription w/ mag. - Of course, there's Used CD bins... |
🎃
Sun. 3/24/13 10:50pm
12539:
It's as good a time as any to poke my head up and let you know I'm enjoying the show.
Sun. 3/24/13 10:51pm
P-90:
@UM: You mean besides the WFMU Record Fair?
![]() |
![]() I mean online....if you're into that sort of thing. |
Sun. 3/24/13 10:53pm
P-90:
@UM: I was hoping that's what you meant. Are there keywords to search to find this enchanted place?
![]() |
![]() I'm reluctant to bandy URLs in order to prevent takedowns. Googling would work but if anyone here wants to to the Friendship Society contact request thing, I'll mail the link. |
![]() |
Sun. 3/24/13 10:58pm
Dave Mandl:
And...hello, 12539. |
![]() |
![]() It says 'No HTML' in Comments - but people frequently Link - & I'm presuming it's not FMU stylee to get Big Brother about there being a World Outside the FMUniverse - but if I'm wrong, I hope I'm told Sooner rather than Later - ! - For all *I* know, a reason for no HTML is Technical rather than 'Political'/Netiquette... |
![]() |
![]() My understanding is that by "no HTML" they mean "no < > tags, etc." Not "no links." Great set, Dave. |
![]() |
![]() I don't mean to be coy, Rev. This stuff is on a most excellent blog that has had to start over numerous times and since links here have permanence, I could be responsible for providing the site with attention that could do it harm. So, I'll give anyone the link...I just want to be a little cautious with someone else' efforts. Policy here wouldn't prevent me posting it. |
Sun. 3/24/13 11:08pm
sweet cheri:
well g'night dave & all | |
![]() |
![]() night cheri |
![]() |
Sun. 3/24/13 11:09pm
Dave Mandl:
Night, Cheri. |
![]() |
![]() This is beautiful. |
![]() |
Sun. 3/24/13 11:10pm
Dave Mandl:
Thanks, Ike. And yes, I think that's true. People post links here all the time. But be careful what you post because you never know who's reading it. |
Sun. 3/24/13 11:13pm
P-90:
Dave: Yes this is really beautiful. @UM: I understood exactly what you meant. I'll check out the Friendship Society, haven't used it yet.
![]() |
Sun. 3/24/13 11:13pm
Droll:
Kenzo fixed a link-mangling bug for me the other day. 1) Kenzo never sleeps. 2) Kenzo fixed the website live, in less than an hour. 3) If Wikipedia allows apostrophe in a URL, that's good enough for Kenzo. I wonder if Kenzo treats his real-life employer as well as garden-variety WFMU listeners. |
![]() |
![]() Bon Soir (spelling?), Cheri! Makes sense - figured better to ask. That Link I posted above is even another stream... |
![]() |
![]() When you join, you can view profiles and there's a contact request thing that will forward your email to someone you wish to invite to write back. If I get a request, I'll accept it. |
![]() |
![]() @Rev...I know that stream, it's a good one. It's rawer in some ways than what we do at Psychedelicized Radio....yet kindred. |
![]() |
![]() This reminds me of Joe Meek's demos. |
![]() |
![]() I'm new enuff to FMU to still be discovering the Program roster & the dif. flavors - which after all are pretty varied - & lotsa heady stuff - ! Add the Archive option - & possibilities w/ Time are sort of exponentional! ...Looks like I discovered another rich & satisfying listen here... |

Sun. 3/24/13 11:28pm
Dave Mandl:
@RR: Why, thank you. And welcome. |
![]() |
![]() I recognize that phone number. |
![]() |
![]() RR, I have been listening to varying extents for over 20 years, and I am still discovering the different flavors. Even as it concerns shows that have been on 10, 20 years, that I just never quite got into until one day I did. And some, like Dave's here, I've come back to after not having tuned into for a while. This station really is a big ridiculous candy store and it's difficult to taste it all or even know which to try at any given time. |
![]() |
![]() ...my spelling~typing exponentially worse... - UM: 'Psychedelicized Radio' is dif. from 'Psychedelic Jukebox' - & Googlable - ??.. |
Sun. 3/24/13 11:42pm
P-90:
"...a big ridiculous candy store" Yay!
![]() |
![]() My first marathon went a long way in helping me find a foothold in the schedule. |
🎃
Sun. 3/24/13 11:45pm
12539:
"ridiculously big," perhaps, but otherwise, nothing ridiculous about it.
Sun. 3/24/13 11:45pm
P-90:
I had my first marathon bronzed.
![]() |
![]() @Rev...yes, different. try psychedelicized.com |
![]() |
![]() - Thanx for that!: Not being an erudite Urban fellow - or a big financial success w/ greatest toys or understanding of tech options - nice to know it's not all me... - As for the challenging side of Connectivity: ...'Got to be so carefull where you stand - in the Digital Wonderland'... - Harry Shearer |
🎃
Sun. 3/24/13 11:55pm
12539:
Thank you, Mr Mandl. | |
![]() |
![]() Thanx Mike - ! ...Oh Geez - !: Another one - !... ...I think of George Harrison in 'Anthology' saying in Post-War Liverpool you couldn't get a cup of sugar much less a rock'n'roll record - now it's like a firehose to try & control... |
![]() |
![]() You're welcome. It was shameless of me, as I'm involved with that enterprise. |
![]() |
![]() I've really been enjoying myself, Mr. Mandl. Thank you. Night all. I will see you later. |
Sun. 3/24/13 11:59pm
