We had one casualty right off the bat which I think was a very good experience for a 7 year old. She GETS that they will survive if she takes care of them and they will die if she doesn't. Didn't try to cover up or mask the death at all.

We have taken a very direct approach with Sophia and animals. She helps raise and take care the birds. When we get a half hog from the farm Sophia helps carve it up. She is pretty unphased by it and I am glad. She likes to play with fish heads and pig kidneys. SHe keeps asking when we are going to thaw the pigs heart in the freezer.

we have a wonderful kids bookstore in Mpls called Wild Rumpus. It has all kinds of animals walking around - chickens, dogs, kittens, there are fish and snake tanks too.

no vivian i used a lot of lumber we had left over in basement. windows and door were re -using abandoned pieces from a friend. we did buy new 2x4's for the frame, and the roof plywood. we looked at other pix and designed it around our space needs. also didn't want to be bending over to clean it out so we made it ergodynamic and accesible to humans.

Thanks Trouble! I took a chicken class a few weeks ago, at which they suggested buying a coop rather than going through the hassle of building it. Up until then, I leaned towards building our own, using found materials. My main concern, as for most chicken folk, is keeping the predators out - including our dogs!
