Avatar Wed. 3/20/13 3:05pm still b/p:

"Racy speedos" sounds like a term Alex and his droogies might toss about: "Out for a bit a' the racy speedos -- right, right?"

rrg, No 7SD, and you'll note they didn't yield their slot to Irwin, probably because of what happened last time.
Avatar Wed. 3/20/13 3:28pm _crazyandy_______________________________:

what happened last time?
Avatar    Wed. 3/20/13 3:28pm BDR:

Irwin, when is your show on WKCR?
Avatar    Wed. 3/20/13 3:28pm rrg:

Maybe Irwin didn't want their smelly old slot.
Avatar Wed. 3/20/13 3:30pm Caryn:

@rrg: Ken is away, and let's face it, there's no way Andy could be persuaded to do the show by himself. Of course, the fact that this is happening right after 7SD got another hour of air time is rather unfortunate. But heck, Lamin gets more time for once. More fair to give a guy with a 1-hour show extra time than to give someone with 3 hours more time, is my take on the "why not Irwin" thing.
Avatar    Wed. 3/20/13 3:31pm RevolutionRabbitNov63:

Woof - Moo...[KSH]ArrrRRGGGGh - !!!
  Wed. 3/20/13 3:32pm Marmalade Kitty:

Good Hoof & Mouth Irwin! Good performance of a really good song!
Avatar Wed. 3/20/13 3:33pm Caryn:

Not to mention that doing a 5-hour show, especially right after the Marathon, is probably not ideal. Irwin probably would prefer not to do that.
Avatar    Wed. 3/20/13 3:33pm rrg:

Will Tony Seymour notice this airplay right away, like last time?
Avatar    Wed. 3/20/13 3:33pm Alison Porchnik:

Best topical song ever.
Avatar    Wed. 3/20/13 3:34pm rrg:

Right. He doesn't want their smelly old slot.
Avatar Wed. 3/20/13 3:34pm Droll:

Caryn, I love Lamin, but putting down 7SD is so much fun and they provide so much fodder! I think of it as a kind of "Primus Sucks!"
  Wed. 3/20/13 3:35pm Emile:

Wow thanks Irwin!
Avatar    Wed. 3/20/13 3:36pm Ike:

Andy has done 7SD without Ken before, but he has to be wrangled by someone else, like the great Kelly Jones. Anyway, looking forward to a 3-hour Lamin show. Hope Ken abandons the crazy 2-hour 7SD concept and gives Lamin 2 permanent hours.
Avatar Wed. 3/20/13 3:36pm Michael:

Heck I remember when Irwin did 2 shows a week - an extra hour is nothing.
Avatar    Wed. 3/20/13 3:36pm Alison Porchnik:

AP, At the very bottom of the Profile Settings is a checkbox to turn off the marathon.

Didn't this Brit play bass with Jimi later on?
Avatar Wed. 3/20/13 4:13pm Caryn:

@RRN63: hence all the parodies and imitations. He's easy to go for, what with the distinctive sound and style.

There's a Theory that we like the heart shape for just that reason.

- Wull - Harry's got more Topical & less Creative it seems - which is probably the Times...If just don't like, then just don't. Plus - have to listen Live to get tunes he plays - which makes it seem more so...

...They say Marino too Hendrixy like it's a bad thing : P ...Thot this might be new Hendrix releases...
Avatar Wed. 3/20/13 4:32pm G:

If Mahogany Rush sounds like Hendrix, does the guy on the bass sound like Noel Coward?

G, Geddy Lee played bass in Mahogany Rush, before they shortened the name and he quit to start that other band, the name escapes me... Their manager also handled Jefferson Whatsamajigger.

Avatar    Wed. 3/20/13 4:49pm RevolutionRabbitNov63:

One biographer of Hendrix described the voices of the Brits around him as 'Hobbit-like' - & I would say there's something to that re the Experience - Mitch Mitchell (d) & Noel Redding (b) (yes a Noel)
- but not *esp.* Noel Coward-like?...(You can hear Redding singing on 'She's So Fine' on 'Axis:Bold as Love' album, & on 'Little Miss Strange' on Electric Ladyland...)
- As for Frank Marino's bassist - I don't know or remember
- but I did see Mahogany Rush not too many years ago (had a violinist!) - &
a.) Not as Hendrixy as you'd think - not his only influence
b.) It was Kewl - ! Had a guy doing a graphix/light show w/ him...

Irwin, as long as you keep your hair short, undreaded, and clean; avoid appearing shirtless in public with only a pair of dirty ragged cut-offs to cover your nakedness; and refrain from hippie dancing, you're all right. In my book, anyway. And I spent my childhood in Berkeley, so I know from.

PBS often drifts into Inane Snobbism of the Half-Educated. If you know any better and value your time and self-respect, watch out...

I would have liked to see some dramatic reenactments of his marriage to Claire Bloom.
Avatar Wed. 3/20/13 5:35pm G:

If the documentarian had just focused mainly on Portnoy, PBS could have started a new American Masturbators series.

I like the carnival atmosphere here today.
Avatar    Wed. 3/20/13 5:36pm Alison Porchnik:

I just realized that this heart icon thing is essentially a way of shaming listeners who comment into giving.

Hula Ghost Dance!

Every listener who comments should give something

one man's shame is another man's friendship.
Avatar    Wed. 3/20/13 5:38pm Matt from Springfield:

@rrg: Some would say it's really nothing.

@AP: And why not--gets $$ from users without charging a user fee! ;)
Avatar Wed. 3/20/13 5:39pm _crazyandy_______________________________:

By the second marathon week it seemed like 90% of commenters had hearts already though.
Avatar Wed. 3/20/13 5:39pm G:

@AP: Social media is all about belonging and shaming. Hence some people's ambivalence...
Avatar    Wed. 3/20/13 5:39pm Carmichael:

I believe you hit the nail on the head, Alison. Shame, after all, is the best tool for fundraising. Look at all those starving children infomercials.
Avatar    Wed. 3/20/13 5:39pm Matt from Springfield:

@Michiel: And, everyone for whom WFMU means something.

...I get impression 'American Masters' gets things from elsewhere - not so much an inhouse kinda Producer? Wouldn't know Roth if he fell on me: I presume your assesment spot on. Watching TV in the Theater - well it is a TV Show.
- PBS seems increasingly to be about soaking shut-in Geriatrics - who don't know there are other sources now - for their funds - & that's a real shame. Repeating the same Programs...
- Just watched 'There But For Fortune' about Phil Ochs on American Masters (...again...) & thot it quite good...

I'd prefer a Spade.

This show has me hypmotized. I should have blown this Bronx taco shack 40 minutes ago. I could be sleeping on the subway right now!

enjoying today's programme, irwin.

I found my spade! It's beating in my chest! Toodles.
Avatar Wed. 3/20/13 5:44pm Droll:

I wonder if that would have been a more popular show if it were shot as a reality show instead of a documentary.

I thought we were supposed to put away our marathon decorations after the holiday ended. My heart is already boxed up and in storage with the X-mas, Thanksgiving, and Halloween decorations.
Avatar    Wed. 3/20/13 5:44pm Matt from Springfield:

You got one, Heartdricks!

But for those who would prefer other card symbols: ♠♠♠♦♦♦♣♣♣

@AP: Aww, but don't sleep in the subway, darling! By which I mean the pedestrian underpass that the Brits refer to as a "subway".
  Wed. 3/20/13 5:45pm Michiel:

Are the hearts a permanent thing?
Avatar Wed. 3/20/13 5:46pm Fredericks:

I'll take a diamond, Math You.
Avatar Wed. 3/20/13 5:46pm G:

I have to say though (and this is not a complaint) that I just went ahead and donated on day one, whereas in prior years I usually waited longer to think about exactly what to do.

But when so many hearts are there, you know not having one can lead others to analyze. So I donated the first Monday, and that way *I* didn't have to think about analyzing possibly being analyzed any more. But I would have donated anyhow at some point. I suppose the heart pushes more donations earlier... :)
Avatar Wed. 3/20/13 5:47pm Fredericks:

Nothing's permanent, Michiel.
Avatar    Wed. 3/20/13 5:47pm Alison Porchnik:

MfS: Never in the pedestrian underpass, only on the train. Although they both smell like urine.

The spoken word piece refers to writing on bathroom walls-
whatever became of that tradition? As late as the 1960's one could find doggeral and mildly ribald graffiti. No more- why?

Facebook.
Avatar Wed. 3/20/13 5:51pm Droll:

G, My only regret in not pledging earlier is I was too late for naming rights to Irwin's comments board. I wanted to name it:
1-800-FREENOSEJOB.COM Coliseum
Avatar    Wed. 3/20/13 5:52pm rrg:

Droll, I think I have it. I haven't named it, though.
Avatar Wed. 3/20/13 5:53pm Droll:

rrg, Hint: It's spelled Colosseum
Avatar Wed. 3/20/13 5:55pm Caryn:

@AP: true, commenters could be shamed. But on the other hand, each person listening online or otherwise using the online services costs WFMU in bandwith costs (whereas the number of radio listeners has no impact on the broadcast costs), so each commenter is costing WFMU money each time they are here. Thus they have more reason to donate. Trying to affect them with simple hearts is a relatively benign method of coercion.
Avatar    Wed. 3/20/13 5:56pm rrg:

I see by the clock on the wall...
Avatar Wed. 3/20/13 5:57pm _crazyandy_______________________________:

That is not necessarily true though. I am commenting now, but listening on terrestrial radio.
Avatar Wed. 3/20/13 5:57pm Droll:

rrg, Yeah, without 7SD looming, that sense of dread at the end of Irwin's show is completely missing.
Thanks again, I!
Avatar Wed. 3/20/13 5:57pm Caryn:

@jan: it's still going on, but perhaps to a lesser extent. I have noted that the personal insults and "for a good time call..." messages seem to have moved online, though.

Yep, rrg, it's that time again. Thanks Irwin for another mid-week treat!

Everything you type winds up on a playlist that takes up space on a server. So you an incremental burden on the system even if you listen on radio, until the fatal accident.
