"I connected with Thomas by telephone in April 2012. He began the conversations with a plea for help, saying he was living with a demon inside him, a second personality he called “Erwin.” He wanted to learn how to control Erwin, how to stop the badness.

Erwin, he said, was the rapist. Aaron, he said, was a good person, a family man, someone who helped the elderly and had love for everyone.

“Erwin would show up, and things would happen in the middle of the night,” Thomas said. “He only comes around when I’m lonely.”"

Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/27/13 3:36pm Caryn:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/27/13 3:48pm Caryn:

@Matt: As I am neither a fan of the Flake (give me a Mint Aero any day) or soft-serve ice cream, I resisted it, but I kinda feel like it's such a cultural icon, I should have it one day (like how I felt I had to order a corned beef on rye once when in NY). Heck, my love of KLF alone makes me feel like I should have one one day.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/27/13 3:51pm Caryn:

@rrg: because it's still so new? Because they're really sensitive over there? Who knows.
Avatar Wed. 2/27/13 3:51pm Matt from Springfield:

Another fine one from Steinberg, Inc.!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/27/13 3:53pm Caryn:

Steinberg wrote this after his initial songs: "Where in the world is Carmen?" and "Oh, there you are, Carmen". He then followed this with "Sorry to wake you up, Carmen" and "Stop hitting me, Carmen!"
Avatar Wed. 2/27/13 3:53pm Matt from Springfield:

@rrg: Because it's merely a repeater, the letters are something like W2XWP or something like that. I don't think we're required to announce those repeaters of other stations in FCC rules, but FMU probably does that to acknowledge our audience in Rockland County.
Avatar Wed. 2/27/13 3:54pm Matt from Springfield:

Caryn, Don't Worry (repeat riff ad nauseum)

  Wed. 2/27/13 3:57pm Alison Porchnik:

Woody Guthrie is said to be the first to release an album of children's music, and as Bob Dylan points out, Leadbelly is one of the very few ex-cons to go on to release a successful children's album.

@Droll: Whatever possessed you to study something so dry as IP law :P
  Wed. 2/27/13 4:39pm paula pc:

well there's love in here and not condescension...I think that comes thru in the collage and the way the singers interact with it...you agree Irwin or am I naive or do you not care
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/27/13 4:40pm rrg:

Because TCP and IP are the only law that matters.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/27/13 4:41pm rrg:

I don't think Irwin ever plays things that he doesn't care about in one way or another.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 2/27/13 4:42pm Irwin:

rrg: Which is why no Cat Stevens, Ella F, or Tuvan throat singing.
Avatar Wed. 2/27/13 4:42pm Droll:

I like the music, but I'm completely floored by the composer -- I think I prefer listening to him speak about the methods and intentions more than listening to the end results. This certainly qualifies as "Concept Album", but not the traditional kind.

G, I didn't choose IP, it chose me. Apparently I am the only person on your planet who thinks musicians suffer most from theft, not lack of opportunity.
  Wed. 2/27/13 4:42pm paula pc:

@ rrg - yep I mean the question of how much condescension figures into this project
  Wed. 2/27/13 4:43pm paula pc:

but I think what they are talking about now covers it
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 2/27/13 4:43pm Irwin:

Gawd, I played Cat Stevens in 2003.

What's happening Now w/ the whole 'Americana' Genre is very intertesting to me
...I see it as almost a Political thing of reclaiming Country from all the people Johnny Cash might have been giving the finger to - certainly by the time he was working for Rick Rubin on American...

...A lot of this is like what Cage said about 'audition' - which means literally the Act of Listening...
Avatar Wed. 2/27/13 4:47pm Matt from Springfield:

Likewise, I also like listening to Nick's discussions and musical concepts, moreso than the final product. Thanks Nick for coming in! Thanks to Irwin and WFMU!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/27/13 4:50pm Caryn:

Yep, the interview bits have been fascinating. Nice booking, Irwin!
Avatar Wed. 2/27/13 4:50pm Matt from Springfield:

@RRN63: All those terms are probably popularized as the result of micro-marketing. "Americana", like you said, is probably aimed at those outside the social/political core of modern country, playing a kind of country/folk rock that is acceptable for AAA station play, yet not really staying in any one genre.
  Wed. 2/27/13 4:53pm RevolutionRabbitNov63:

...I think the 'Post-Modern Question' definitely is relevant in terms of what is 'Folk' (Barbara Allen? Dylan?) 'Classical' (Stockhausen? Eleanor Rigby?) or 'Pop' (Teenage Fanclub? Justin Beiber?) anymore anyhow...
- We forget that Mozart was a syphilitic improvising party-animal in his own time...

- yeah, Cage: It's about Context.

...Ferinstance: It ticks me off that people still believe Rockfans are dumb & ill-informed in face of all the evidence...We are in fact the Gnostics (the Knowers) - !...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/27/13 4:55pm rrg:

What's he playing?

What stringed instrument, I mean?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 2/27/13 4:56pm Alison Porchnik:

sounds like a mandolin or maybe even a dulcimer
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/27/13 4:57pm rrg:

But a little different from both.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/27/13 4:57pm Caryn:

Sounds like a kantele of some kind. Possibly a Scottish upright one.

Avatar Wed. 2/27/13 5:32pm Matt from Springfield:

@RRN63: In the modern age of much information, ability to record it and commercial release music, kids' playground rhymes repeated are the clearest example of folk or traditional music; no author, taught person to person with potential for modification, and well established as a performance song by the time it's recorded.

Now a "folk singer" can compose their own songs in a "folk" style, but ultimately that style was derived from that series of "traditional" songs. The next question would be: how long does it take to accept a style of music as a "folk" one?
