I've met a few "don't listen" people. One wouldn't go anywhere so far she'd have to learn new street names. One had self-imposed menu restrictions involving ranch dressing on everything.

Honey Water:

You can still avidly have listened to music but still not know Journey. I'm in that category.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:46pm
G:

Some people listen to music more than others. My parents just had kids records to keep us kids busy, and an old copy of Victory At Sea from the 50s. Later (1967ish?) they broke down and got a huge music system furniture thing the size of a small car with a reel to reel, and proceeded to borrow and tape LP's from neighbors and my dad's coworkers. With six kids, you cut expenditure corners.

But yeah, some people are not that desperate for music, or don't want to put out time and money beyond what the great commercial music machine proposes they listen to via free radio and free tv. I started buying my own 45s when I hit about 11 or 12.
Avatar 3:56pm

Journey did their pop music thing for them that likes it...no crime. But they surely deserve to be laughed at or throttled for one of the worst videos ever made. Go low budget, fine, but jeeee-zus...

Avatar 4:02pm

Avatar 4:02pm
Droll:

Steve Perry's manager also handled Journey, and he's responsible for forcing the two acts together to record all those individually wrapped American cheese food slices. Pre-Perry Journey was actually a very capable fusion band.
Avatar 4:02pm
Honey Water:

@still b/p: For me it's just my career path and hobbies involved hearing very little Billboard charting music between about '73 and '91.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:03pm
G:

@still b/p and those interested in the whole "hating separate ways video" thing:

""Here's a band at their commercial peak", says Adam Dubin, director of many well-received videos, "and some idiot decided to film them on a wharf and—here's the worst part—instead of giving them instruments, let them mime playing imaginary instruments. The director should be shot. And the manager should be shot for allowing his band to be put in this position."

A decade later, it was heavily ridiculed by Beavis and Butt-head. This greatly upset [the composer] Cain, since he felt Journey's videos had helped make MTV. He called the band's manager repeatedly to ask how they could stop the channel from reairing the segment. In 1999 MTV chose it as 13th on its list of the 25 Worst Videos of All Time.

In 2011, Dave Bahan of Peoria, Illinois, radio station WIXO-FM named the video the worst of all time. He suggested it did not look like the band had put much effort into the video, and criticized their appearance in clothing that, in perspective, seemed to embody the failings of early 1980s popular fashion. However, he allowed that "they looked normal for 1982-83. They likely didn't think they would be judged for their video efforts almost thirty years later." "I'm at a loss to explain that video," says Cain. "I will never live down those air keyboards. No matter what else I've done in my career, sooner or later people find a way to ask me about the 'Separate Ways' video." "

Wasn't the timing of that Manhattan water main break close to the announcement of Koch's death? Thought it was perhaps some sort of city workers tribute.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:42pm

Maybe or maybe not, HW, but the timing of the release of Koch's 2006 or 07 interview with the NY Times on the day of his death was definitely prearranged on both sides :) He got his zingers in, fwiw or not.

Wiki:

Martin was born in Steubenville, Ohio, to an Italian father, Gaetano and an Italian-American mother, Angela Crocetti (née Barra). His father was from Montesilvano, Pescara, Abruzzo, Italy, and his mother was of Neapolitan and Sicilian ancestry. Martin had an older brother named Bill. Martin spoke only Italian until he started school. He attended Grant Elementary School in Steubenville, and took up the drums as a hobby as a teenager. He was the target of much ridicule for his broken English and ultimately dropped out of Steubenville High School in the 10th grade because he thought that he was smarter than his teachers.[3] He delivered bootleg liquor, served as a speakeasy croupier, was a blackjack dealer, worked in a steel mill and boxed as a welterweight. He grew up a neighbor to Jimmy the Greek.
