@ Pine--to say well worth it is an understatement. There's a good documentary film on him too; I forget the title, but I recall some wonderful footage of him in the film during his travels as a young man; no doubt avail. on Netflix.

...maybe Gold Star Studios just brings that out in people. The Beach Boys recorded there...and they had to deal with Murray Wilson, their father...

Wed. 11/14/12 3:55pm
Caryn:
@Laura L & Pine: the documentary is "Bird on a Wire". It was originally made in 1972, but rereleased after being "lost" for decades in 2010. It is fabulous. But here's a link to probably the first documentary about Cohen, made before he really started making music: http://documentarystorm.com/ladies-and-gentlemen-mr-leonard-cohen/

Yes thank you Caryn! I'll take a look at that. Actually I'll take a look at that website in general, sounds good.

G:
I just jumped Irwin from 20% to 38%. Last week on the board, I said I'd think about pledging, and I have. Thinking, plus some ongoing new work starting this week, plus some well-honed interpretive reading, all conspired to tip the balance... Come on the resta youze peoplez.

Ah some escapism, I needed this - thanks Irwin! A horrible day in the old sod.

Wed. 11/14/12 4:03pm
Caryn:
@Matt: yeah, I just recently discovered that website, and I was instantly drawn to investigate. Seems good.

Wed. 11/14/12 4:06pm
Caryn:
Ahh, Cohen and Buckley... I could listen to either of those two sing for days on end.
|
Wed. 11/14/12 4:07pm
Matt from Springfield:
@OD: Besides Mondays, the first part of Wednesdays tend to be the toughest for me as well. Irwin's show is the perfect "turning point" of the week!
|
Wed. 11/14/12 4:07pm
hamburger:
I also don't like horrible days. Especially ones in the old sod. You gotta just let them pass I guess. I'm not one to fight them off.

Wed. 11/14/12 4:12pm
Caryn:
@od: for a while, I thought maybe you were trapped in a Groundhog Day-style time loop where it was Monday forever. That would certainly make a person feel depressed.
|
Wed. 11/14/12 4:13pm
Matt from Springfield:
I too look forward to WFMU shows, no matter what the day of week it is now!

Re LC's following on the right side of the pond: It was my very very British classical guitar teacher who got me a sheet music book of LC tabs and had me learn some, in 1972. I still have it, in loose pages. Spine totally broke up around 1973.

Question I'd like to ask Sylvie: if LC's finances had not been ruined by his manager/lover, does she believe he'd be doing as much touring as he has been? And if not, what would she speculate Leonard would be up to these days instead.

Just waiting for the LC Retirement Fund kickstarter appeal to appear.

Wed. 11/14/12 4:41pm

@hamburger: well, of course Walker went not only for the solitude, but for the Gregorian chanting, but there aren't a lot of hymns in a Buddhist monastery.

What?? He never slept with Nico? Even I did.. ;)

Wed. 11/14/12 4:44pm

@hamburger: I think you're confusing the monastery with Disneyworld, which essentially turns into a leather S&M club after hours.
|
Wed. 11/14/12 4:45pm
Matt from Springfield:
"Marrying cones of incense" and other things to attract Nico, to no avail. Nico wanted her "toys" instead! :)

First the percussions, then the recorders... are you just trying to remind me of my orchestra days?

Wed. 11/14/12 5:36pm
Irwin:
@Caryn: I carried a freakin' bass drum around the HS football field. I'm a victim.

Go david! Dare to Kildare!
|
Wed. 11/14/12 5:45pm
Caryn:
Irwin, do you mean the CPE are 14-year-olds, or that they've been around for 14 years? Considering the Langley Schools Project reference, I'm guessing it's the first one.
|
Wed. 11/14/12 5:45pm
G:
I had to play acoustic guitar in Ensemble. And memorize choreography, too. I didn't mind the vocal harmony parts. I would change them up some, if I felt like it, and the director didn't spot it. :-) But the brutal part was the outfit we had to wear. Let's just say: very 70s, very flyover. If that combo makes any cultural sense. Way beyond paisley. Yeah, it was in Brasil, but it was a US curriculum school with an Ensemble director from **Indiana**.

Wow, they have President-elect Vermin Love Supreme at the UCB Theater!

Wed. 11/14/12 5:47pm
Matt from Springfield:
How'd you get such an early phone number, 8? The Old Codger's is right below that at 6--did you trade him something for that number?
|
Wed. 11/14/12 5:48pm
Matt from Springfield:
@OD: Aw c'mon, Clay would be excited right now, telling you to have "PRIDE!" in that county, naming bands from there and singing their songs! :)
|
Wed. 11/14/12 5:49pm
Caryn:
@Irwin & G: The thing is, I have no bad memories of my recorder orchestra days, except for my continuing annoyance of how the recorder is viewed in general as some fake/kids' instrument that you can stick in anyone's hand and have them just blow into it without any technique. There's a technique, dammit! No wonder a lot of recorder players refer to the instrument as "flauto dolce" just to avoid having to always explain to people that it's a serious instrument.

I think Carmichael is the one who regularly brings this up, how "Texas is a great place to be FROM!" Maybe it's the same for you, david :D
