Listener comments!

  9:06pm
12539:

"...he's got funk in his name!"
  9:06pm
Clock Watcher:

I thought for a few minutes there that the 1970s might never arrive :)
  9:09pm
Mike East:

the lightening striking right outside my office window today was pretty sick.
  9:10pm
PB:

Yeah, I was gonna say lightning strikes not once not twice, but a few hundred times. What a wild, wild storm.
  9:11pm
roscoe sugarfield:

love how rupture calls it "the evan davies funk show"
  9:11pm
SteveL:

Its storming all around here. Just no rain ON here.
  9:12pm
Mike East:

This tweet from WFMU earlier cracked me up:

Wild Aerial Shot of Storm Over New York City Right Now: blogfiles.wfmu.org/KF/2012/07/18/…
  9:13pm
Barkevious Shabazz:

Do it to the crowd. Way friggin old stylee.
  9:13pm
Holly in NC:

Hey Evan & all!
  9:14pm
Mike East:

oops, that link won't work:

  9:17pm
PB:

efd, any trouble getting into the studio tonight. It looked like the subways were a mess but I had no trouble on Metro North.
  9:17pm
SteveL:

Mike East: I'm pretty sure NYC is not in Kansas anymore.
  9:18pm
G:

But Kansas is sitting all around Times Square now.
  9:18pm
Mike East:

nice one SteveL :)
  9:18pm
Holly in NC:

Really like the new Nice Face lp. And Twin Hype - whoa, memories!
Speaking of hip hop & memories, rip Ms. Melodie :-(

efd:

Hey everyone! PB, no travel problems tonight, despite some dire NJ Transit warnings; thanks for asking.

Hi Holly, Mike East, G, 12539, Steve, roscoe and all! Thanks very much for tuning in!
  9:21pm
SteveL:

THE Mick Cocks? This guy?

http://www.upi.com/Odd_News/2012/07/18/TSA-questions-man-over-penis-bulge/UPI-80711342634324/?spt=fsb&or=ros&fb_source=message
  9:22pm
Barkevious Shabazz:

In the battle of the newly stiff, ya gotta give it up for Jon Lord. I mean, Highway Star? Cmon.
  9:24pm
SteveL:

I loved Deep Purple as a kid. Of course I played guitar-rather badly. The organ is what made DP sound so inspired. Would not have been the same band at all without Jon Lord.
  9:26pm
Barkevious Shabazz:

Indeed.
  9:26pm
PB:

Sweet Child of Mine, Hush, Kentucky Woman, bringing back some teenage memories.
  9:28pm
PB:

Phil Daniels as in the guy who so brilliantly played Jimmy in Quadrophenia? Never knew he was involved in music as well. Quadrophenia is such a great movie.
  9:28pm
Holly in NC:

I KNEW EFD WOULD MAKE THIS SEGUE I KNEW IT KNEW IT!!!
  9:29pm
12539:

I didn't know, but I hoped and prayed.
  9:33pm
Mike East:

@PB - never saw it...thanks for the tip! Added to my queue and unfortunately there's a "very long wait" for it. Seems everything on the top of my queue these days has that same message.
  9:34pm
Holly in NC:

The Pygmies' "Don't Monkey With Tarzan" is also on that most estimable Smash Boom Bang Ace comp.. a song that I desperately love & would like everyone to love also ;-)
  9:41pm
SteveL:

I love bin flipping. Much nicer with albums and singles than CDs, but I love the process.
  9:52pm
Jim Devoid:

RIP Jon Lord!
  9:53pm
SteveL:

Nice. Can't imagine how many times I listened to this song. Loved it much more than Smoke on the Water.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57pm
efd:

@SteveL, I think to some extent "Smoke On The Water" was a victim of its overexposure - but I concur that "Highway Star" rocks a little harder for me.

@Mike East, the wait for Quadrophenia will be worth it. Even Sting can't ruin int!

Greetings Jim and Barkevious, thanks for joining us!
  9:57pm
Chop Scott:

Yah Yah Yah!!! Finally Deep Purple. A truly massive rock band. R.I.P. Jon Lord.
  10:00pm
Jim Devoid:

I'm privy to songs like Speed King, myself...amazing energy from the band, not so much from the audience:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p0rAP87B7UA

I have been out of touch, didn't know that the Tee Pee label was still around. Kadavar reminds me slightly of Witchcraft.
  10:00pm
Mike East:

Holy crap you made that hour fly, efd! I gotta get outta here. Luckily I drove in today so I'll catch the rest in the car. Cheers!
  10:02pm
SteveL:

efd: Oh yeah, SOTW is an amazing song. Kadavar was a nice transition our of DP. What year?
  10:03pm
Glenn:

Those Kadavar riffs were giving me a bad case of the munchies.
  10:03pm
PB:

efd, couldn't agree more, as much as I really don't like Sting and/or the Police he is great in the role of "The Ace" in Quadrophenia.
  10:03pm
cubicle carl:

Holy quaaludes, Batman!! That Kadaver track was cool.
  10:05pm
SteveL:

Sting also did not ruin "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels."
  10:07pm
G:

Is ticket salad high-carb? :-)
  10:09pm
Barkevious Shabazz:

An all quadrophonic special? We can only hope. Is the Douchemaster catalogue available in quad?
  10:09pm
Danne D:

Hi Funk Fans :)
Hi EFD :)
  10:13pm
Holly in NC:

Hi Danne!
  10:13pm
James Michael Cooper:

Phil Daniels also sang lead on Blur's Parklife track. He's got a new movie coming out about how The Alarm scored a hit a few years ago. Mike Peters talked about it on an old Jonesville Station
  10:14pm
Danne D:

Hi Holly :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16pm
efd:

cool, thanks for that info James!

Hi Danne, and hi c. carl and all!
  10:18pm
listener bill:

this singer sounds like peggy fournier of personal effects/hi-techs, bands that I loved in high school growing up in rochester
  10:26pm
john:

Hey Evan! We're home at last, and sitting down near a computer just in time to hear Dog Eat Dog and Allo Darlin, two of my heavy rotation elpees this year!
  10:27pm
Holly in NC:

Loved Dog Eat Dog, fwiw.
  10:28pm
john:

On a roll here!
  10:28pm
Randy in NC:

Hi, what'd I miss?
  10:29pm
john:

Holly, the whole Dog Eat Dog record is great...worth digging out if you can find it!
  10:33pm
Randy in NC:

Neil Armstrong is for this coming Friday I assume...
  10:33pm
Holly in NC:

@john - discogs! :-)
  10:35pm
cubicle carl:

Them some fat synths on that Beach Boys track.
  10:38pm
cubicle carl:

I think the db's discovered the fountain of youth. They must have not inhaled.
  10:40pm
Randy in NC:

This entire dB's CD sounds very "seltaeb"-esq I think. And I mean that in a good way. If my copy were vinyl, it would be worn out already...
  10:41pm
john:

Way underappreciated record, BBs Love You. Fantastic set!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41pm
efd:

Hi Bill - I'm not familiar with those Rochester bands, but now I'm intrigued!

@john, welcome back from LA! Hope you're settling back in to the home routine (and that cats and everything/one else are quickly readjusting as well).

Hi Randy! Is this Friday the moon landing anniversary? 43 years...?
  10:41pm
Destroit:

hello EFD and all the nice people. Happy to be here.
  10:42pm
Randy in NC:

efd, yes, 7/20/1969
  10:45pm
john:

It's quietly shaping up to be a year of great new records. Other faves suitable for this show include Monochrome Set, Evans The Death, the second GBV, and there's the first new Shoes record in 18 years!
  10:47pm
john:

You do remember correctly, though Edison Lighthouse was a Tony Burrows studio project, in case you wondered why it sounded like White Plains' My Baby Loves Lovin' and First Class' Beach Baby. But not much like The Pipkins Gimme Dat Ding. Thank G-d.
  10:49pm
Fuzzy:

HCTRDFA -- t'was The Fortunes that did that song (I always forget -- had to look it up)
  10:51pm
john:

Oh, and thanks for the welcome home to Eastern Daylight Time--four days and ready to go back, I think!
  10:52pm
PB:

My favorite album of the year (at least so far) is Radar Eyes self-titled release on Hozac.
  10:55pm
Ignore Function:

Nice show, EFD.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm
efd:

Thanks, Ignore Function! And thanks Fuzzy for The Fortunes!

john, Tony Burrows was in on First Class too? I was just talking about them earlier as being a John Carter project.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm
efd:

oh, and hi Destroit! Nice to see you.
  11:00pm
Barkevious Shabazz:

The Jack White record is top notch. Diverse to the nth.
  11:01pm
john:

Tony Burrows was the lead singer for all those projects, as well as Brotherhood of Man. He worked with John Carter a lot, including the Flowerpot Men and The Ivy League as well as First Class.
  11:03pm
john:

In fact, is the Flowerpot Men why you were talking about John Carter before I got here--Jon Lord connection?
  11:03pm
Holly in NC:

(ears perking) Sound of Worms Tony Burrows?
  11:05pm
john:

I'm going to have to pass on that one, Holly--anyone? Anyone?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06pm
efd:

if I were smart that would have been why; it was because I played Starbreaker, which John Carter also masterminded.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06pm
efd:

Holly - are you referring to the new sound, the sound deep inside the ground?
  11:07pm
Holly in NC:

@efd, indeed, i am ;-)
  11:08pm
Danne D:

:) Makes me think of Greasy Kids Stuff :)
  11:10pm
john:

On further reflection, though, it may be a shade embarrassing that I probably know more about the Flower Pot Men, and fairly little at that, than about Deep Purple. Though everyone in my fifth grade class loved that Smoke On The Water riff...
  11:16pm
Holly in NC:

No offense to J. White, who I respect, but ever since (idiot) Noel Gallagher's infamous diss I laugh out loud every time I think of the man, it just never gets old. I am a horrible person.
  11:17pm
Barkevious Shabazz:

And everyone who listens to it squirms...
  11:18pm
McG:

Just got here. What did I miss?
  11:18pm
SteveL:

Jobriath trailer if interested. http://vimeo.com/44007304
  11:21pm
john:

No respect intended to Jack White; Gallagher was so dead spot on it should be JW's epitaph.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26pm
efd:

Holly, further to "Sound Of Worms" - turns out that was Tony Burrello, not Burrows.

Hey McG, thanks for checking in!
  11:26pm
Beastmode:

Oh yeah!
  11:27pm
Holly in NC:

Why did it take so long for someone to krautify 'On the Road Again' ? It seems so obvious, now...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27pm
efd:

Beastmode, I'm not surprised to see you because I know you don't sleep.
  11:28pm
Holly in NC:

Ah. If I were home I could've easily ascertained. Thank you. efd.
  11:33pm
Holly in NC:

More Noah!
  11:33pm

Hey Evan! Just checking in. Loved that "on the road again". I'm half asleep though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33pm

Not because of the show, I hasten to add.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34pm

Hi Sybil! Great to hear from you! But feel free to continue all the way to sleep. :)
  11:41pm

hi efd! ive been too busy to join the comments board tonight but have been enjoying the show. also i went back and re-listened to the 4th show in its entirety... so good.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43pm

Fat Boys track was cool.
  11:52pm
john:

Wow, I never heard of these guys when I was at school. Considering that familiarity with The Broken Hearts would have increased my tally of good bands in eastern CT by 50%, I'm disappointed.
