Berg:

Hiya Liz & Lizzeners !
  9:04am
DCE:

morning, Liz. Missed you for the past coupla weeks. But I'm here now.
  9:07am
Cheri Pi:

Hello Liz and fellow Bergerians!
  9:11am
Thierry:

Good afternoon! Absolutely gorgeous, this Anton Batagov. Do you know the rest of his discography well? Is it just as good?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13am
Liz B.:

Hi everyone and welcome! Thierry, this is my first encounter with Anton Batagov, but someone wrote "Russia's Terry Riley" on the CD, so that sounds like a nice endorsement to me.
  9:14am
Thierry:

Great find, Liz!
  9:16am
Cheri Pi:

I agree Liz- it was haunting and loopy, the Buddhist references were perfect too as I just rediscovered my Buddha box over the weekend.
  9:23am
joe supernaut:

Love that Batagov ever since I heard you play it a couple weeks ago. Nice!

  9:27am
DCE:

this is awesome...who is this mysterious "h." artist?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30am
Liz B.:

I'm a big fan of h. Lots of great songs on the FMA:
freemusicarchive.org...
  9:31am
DCE:

great, thanks, will do my due diligence!
  9:32am
Thierry:

I finally found what 'the 35 Buddhas' reminded me of: Lee Ranaldo's 'Shibuya's Displacement' where he records the arrival of the subway train at Tokyo's Shibuya station. Will check h. too.
  9:38am
dave of geese:

i've been really enjoying the buddhas too, since hearing it on wfmu.i got it off soulseek-- i cant seem to find the actual artifact for sale anywhere though-seems like the kind of thing i'd like a "proper" copy of- anyone seen it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am
Liz B.:

Batagov 35 Buddhas MP3s on his site:
www.batagov.com...
  9:46am
dave of geese:

ah thanks Liz
there is no physical incarnation of it then for old people?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48am
Liz B.:

We've got a CD here, Dave of Geese, it's on the Tummo label, dated 2001.
  9:57am
dave of geese:

ah good- I'm getting one!
  9:59am
Cecile:

ha, Liz, a friend and I were just talking about Buddha boxes this weekend. I got the iPod app, but it needs some more options like pitch and speed controls. Oh, and me not having crappy headphones.
  10:01am
Cecile:

dave of geese, if you want an actual box, email Liz. I give her my OK to give you my email address. I'd be happy to set mine free.
  10:01am
Cecile:

send me some music and pay postage, and we're set.
  10:02am
Cheri Pi:

We have a local guy in Cincinnati (Rheed Ghazala) who invented circuit bending, he gave a radio interview last night and was talking about different ways to manipulate the Buddha box-mine is the Throbbing Gristle edition so it sounds pretty good w/o too much interference. but why not push it?
  10:03am
Cheri Pi:

*Reed*
  10:04am
dave of geese:

ah thanks Cecile-- so you have an actual copy of the cd?
  10:06am
dave of geese:

i could send you a 3eese cd if you'd like?
  10:08am
Cecile:

I think Scott did that on his show, too.
  10:09am
Cecile:

no, an actual Buddha box. I don't have the CD.
  10:09am
Cecile:

If that's what you want, s'cool.
  10:11am
northguineahills:

I just have the original FM3 Buddha box. It makes for good dj fodder....
  10:13am
Cecile:

I am trying to slough off my things that are redundant, not used and are wanted by others. So the Buddha box can go if someone really wants it.
  10:20am
Cecile:

it's so funny to hear the rock music of my young years described as "jams". That usually was reserved for the funk-floorfillers of the day, when we would do the bus stop with onions attached to our belts, which was the fashion of the time.
  10:23am
Thierry:

I am learning about this Buddha box here (where was I all these years?). Has it been a big craze?
  10:24am
Cecile:

For about 3-4 years, I think. I first heard about it when they were giving them away as fundraiser premiums here on 'FMU.
  10:25am
northguineahills:

No Joy is joyful, has a nice 90s shoegaze appeal to it.
  10:26am
Cheri Pi:

I don't know if it was a craze but it definitely is a fun novelty item to play with- they were for sale at some of the good U.S. record stores a few years ago
  10:27am
Cecile:

this "rejected" is great. Are they from Ohio? It sounds like it.
  10:30am
DCE:

it's more like an "ohio stink" that gets on ya. anyway, I've not heard of them before, Cecile.
  10:31am
Cecile:

You know it's a very Midwestern tragedy to not want to eat sausages.
  10:32am
Chris from DC:

This is a great set.
  10:32am
Cheri Pi:

I"m ffom Ohio (not originally)-I thought it sounded kinda Awesome Color-ey
  10:33am
Cecile:

I love this song. It sounds like the Seachers, with very 21st century lyrics
  10:33am
Cheri Pi:

I needed this Sonny song right now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33am
Liz B.:

Scott & Charlene's Wedding are from NZ or Australia.
  10:34am
DCE:

that's just down the street from Ohio...on a universal basis!
  10:34am
Cheri Pi:

Cecile-your NZ radar is pointing towards Ohio- either way it's win/win :)
  10:35am
Cecile:

With the Eddy Current Supression Ring and these guys, it seems like the young uns are worshipping Ubu and the Electric Eels instead of the Stooges. Very interesting!
  10:37am
Cecile:

ha, they also have a song called "gammy leg." lololol
  10:37am
Cheri Pi:

I had a good old fashioned Ohio people's problem the other night when couldn't decide if I should play Pere Ubu or the Clean- naturally I played both.
  10:37am
DCE:

wow, did Ennio Morricone work on this one with the Fresh and Onlys?
  10:38am
DCE:

(rhetorical)
  10:38am
DCE:

((as if))
  10:39am
northguineahills:

wait, wut???!! a new Superchunk????!!! What year is it??
  10:39am
Cheri Pi:

[Haha]
  10:41am
BSI:

late to the party.
should i have brought beer?
  10:42am
grubbus:

u should always bring beer! Superchunk rules!
  10:42am
DCE:

there's a few cans back of the fridge, BSI, but...next time!
  10:42am
Cheri Pi:

Beer!! sounds good right now BSI- Monday morning shandy?
  10:45am
BSI:

capital idea! simply capital!
  10:49am
Cecile:

WOW.
does anyone know what the reaction to this has been in the Ethiopian community? This is pretty great.
  10:54am
DCE:

now this, this is Ohio. At its stinkiest.
  10:54am
paula pc:

i think this is the wrong speed, or in FMU terms, an "alternate slower speed"
  10:55am
paula pc:

and I agree with DCE -- and Liz your show is so GREAT today!!! (as always, but more so)
  10:56am
Cheri Pi:

Yes-that was every Ohio band on every Ohio drug mixed together- nice.
  10:57am
Chris from DC:

Had a pretty nice Belgian ale yesterday that was good for early in the day. Maybe not this early, though.
  10:57am
Jennique:

Does "Si Se Puede" mean "pour the wine"? Because that's what I'm thinking when I hear this.
  10:59am
Cecile:

I think it means if you can...
someone might want to confirm.
  10:59am
Cheri Pi:

yesterday I had a pint of Flying Horse for breakfast with some cocktail samosas-I had to shop at the Indian carryout due to laziness.
  11:01am
Cecile:

I had gorgeous beers on Saturday - a Fulton summer pilsner and a new beer Steeltoe Provider - a unfiltered ale that was a cross between a belgian beer and a lager. Good stuff. And both breweries are within 10 miles of my house.
  11:01am
northguineahills:

Cool, finally the new Laetitia!
  11:02am
BSI:

In this climate, it's probably never too early.
...and Viva Laetitia. Always a pleasure.
  11:03am
northguineahills:

@Cecile: yes, I think it means if you're able/can. (depending on context)
  11:03am
curtis chip:

hi liz,
greets from berlin
  11:03am
bw:

it is noon somewhere
thanks LB!!!
  11:04am
Cheri Pi:

That unfiltered beer sounds like heaven Cecile.
  11:04am
northguineahills:

Hanging out w/ you guys are turning me into a tasteful alcoholic (like I wasn't anyways).

Stereolab broke up after Tim and Laetitia broke up :(
  11:06am
Cecile:

It was really good. We drank it with happy hour poutine and this wonderful nacho-like dish called "deli debris" at Rye Deli in Mpls. It's a perfect resto - a Jewish deli with a deep fryer and a full bar.
  11:07am
Cecile:

They also make canadian faves like smoked meat and poutine.

Re: Scott and Charlene - I found out that it's a Melbourne guy who moved to Brooklyn. Victoria is a suburb of Melbourne.
  11:07am
Cecile:

No kidding! I love Clare!
  11:09am
Cecile:

hahahah
I think people who study traditional foodways should be called forklorists.
  11:09am
Chris from DC:

Rodenbach. That's the Belgian I was thinking of. Great stuff.
  11:11am
Cecile:

It was so hot this weekend that I drank four beers over the course of 8 hours on Saturday, and I was wiped out the next day. bummer...
  11:12am
Thierry:

Your program flies, Liz! Comments captivating! That does it, I'm subscribing to 2 WFMU podcasts: Liz Berg & Beer Hear! !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16am
Liz B.:

Thanks for all the nice words, my fellow forklorists!
  11:17am
Mike East:

I didn't drink nearly enough beer this weekend. Maybe 3 on Friday, 2 on Saturday...pitiful. Working the weekend really takes away from my enjoyment of life. But on the bright side, I'll have more money to buy better beers.
  11:24am
DCE:

danceworthy!
  11:24am
BSI:

...whereas I'm wondering if a few early-afternoon ales would help with the flowery prose of resume cover-letters over here...? Hm..... a strategy hatcheth!
  11:27am
joe:

'ello folks
Liz I love the selections of Latin music over the last couple of weeks.
  11:28am
Cheri Pi:

Doo eet BSI! revision is for tomorrow-ville...
  11:28am
DCE:

that guitar riff there just unleashed everything. I am now complete. For the moment.
  11:33am
Buzbee:

Putting an aspirin in my coke.
  11:34am
Cecile:

BSI, do you have an art website set up?
  11:35am
Trend-Over-End:

What happened to Polyphonic Spree? 15-minutes up kind of thing?
  11:41am
BSI:

@cecile: i'm not a web guy but did a down-&-dirty free thing. http://tinyurl.com/7jw4rnh -- figure i'll try for more magazine stuff and/or music freelance, what the hell. It ain't very elegant but it's something.
  11:42am
BSI:

BTW: brilliant set, Liz. And show. Me diggy.
  11:45am
Cecile:

Wow, impressive!
I'm sure you're going to find something toot sweet.
  11:47am
D in Miami:

BSI, that's some nice work! Good morning all!
  11:47am
DCE:

love the "music packaging" section, BSI
  11:48am
Mike East:

yeah, negative space art is top notch.
  11:50am
BSI:

thanks folks. Got a couple of other cd covers for The Muffins that need to join the pile. My problem is I end up doing those for friends, gratis, since I love the music. Helps the portfolio but it don't buy daddy no beer!
  11:50am
Cheri Pi:

Well, I'm not going to tha YooPee this summer, I need a break from my family.
  11:52am
BSI:

Tackle a moose!
  11:53am
Cecile:

Aw, that's too bad, Cheri.
  11:58am
Cheri Pi:

Yeah-they're all being especially crazy (in a bad way) this time of year. Will miss those sunsets on the lake...
  12:01pm
Cecile:

well, you gotta watch out for your own sanity.
  12:26pm
Sara:

thanks for the show, was waking up to it
  8:03am
Barry Hobby:

Listening to old shows, probably no one goes back and reads new comments on old shows, but just in case - the original version of the ProleteR song was one of my father's favorites by the Mills brothers from I think the late 40's
