Options April 23, 2012: April is the cruelest month, but there's no waste land here.
T.S. Eliot (1888–1965). The Waste Land. 1922.

I. THE BURIAL OF THE DEAD

APRIL is the cruellest month, breeding
Lilacs out of the dead land, mixing
Memory and desire, stirring
Dull roots with spring rain.
Winter kept us warm, covering
Earth in forgetful snow, feeding
A little life with dried tubers.
Summer surprised us, coming over the Starnbergersee
With a shower of rain; we stopped in the colonnade,
And went on in sunlight, into the Hofgarten,
And drank coffee, and talked for an hour.
Bin gar keine Russin, stamm’ aus Litauen, echt deutsch.
And when we were children, staying at the archduke’s,
My cousin’s, he took me out on a sled,
And I was frightened. He said, Marie,
Marie, hold on tight. And down we went.
In the mountains, there you feel free.
I read, much of the night, and go south in the winter.

What are the roots that clutch, what branches grow
Out of this stony rubbish? Son of man,
You cannot say, or guess, for you know only
A heap of broken images, where the sun beats,
And the dead tree gives no shelter, the cricket no relief,
And the dry stone no sound of water. Only
There is shadow under this red rock,
(Come in under the shadow of this red rock),
And I will show you something different from either
Your shadow at morning striding behind you
Or your shadow at evening rising to meet you;
I will show you fear in a handful of dust.
Frisch weht der Wind
Der Heimat zu,
Mein Irisch Kind,
Wo weilest du?
“You gave me hyacinths first a year ago;
They called me the hyacinth girl.”
—Yet when we came back, late, from the Hyacinth garden
Your arms full, and your hair wet, I could not
Speak, and my eyes failed, I was neither
Living nor dead, and I knew nothing,
Looking into the heart of light, the silence.
Öd’ und leer das Meer.

Mon. 4/23/12 2:22pm Brian in UK:

Cahoots is such a lovely album. What happened to my copy. Lost in one of the many moves no doubt. Only you would think of this one, Irene.
  Mon. 4/23/12 2:23pm kat330:

SCOTS put this in their Banana Pudding recipe I guess.
  Mon. 4/23/12 2:24pm v k:

Memphis in May 1995 - 16 years old - saw what was billed as "Levon Helm and the The Band" (Hudson, Danko also) - was confused upon first impression, unable to apply a genre label, identify with crowd enthusiasm, identify a single, etc. - a week later I purchased their complete works, which has remained in my regular listening rotation - RIP Levon
  Mon. 4/23/12 2:24pm ?:

I put on my DVD of the Last Waltz last night; what a great musician, what a loss
Mon. 4/23/12 2:25pm Sean in Bristol, UK:

Sorry folks I have had a "pants" day, this track has totally lifted my spirits even though it's called the "blues so bad"!
  Mon. 4/23/12 2:32pm Carmichael:

I'm afraid to ask what a "pants" day is ...
Avatar    Mon. 4/23/12 2:33pm Irene:

  Mon. 4/23/12 2:33pm kat330:

@Irene: Thanks for taking over the Helm. I had been kinda feeling FMU wasn't giving Levon his due, at least compared to other RIP tributes in the past months. Now it's much more on even keel.
Mon. 4/23/12 2:33pm Brian in UK:

Sean, The Band always find places you can seek solace in. Know it sounds cheesy but they were the best live.

Carmichael, It means a crap day.
  Mon. 4/23/12 2:34pm kat330:

@Carm: I'm guessing it's equivalent to a "mama rag" day. ;)

@Irene: Thanks for the link to you pics!
  Mon. 4/23/12 2:36pm KevinfromBayRidge:

Finally... A bonafide tribute to a great man. So happy that I saw him in various incarnations over a 25 year span. Even got to shake his hand in the Rodeo Bar in the early oughts(when he was drumming but not singing)
Thanks, Irene.
Mon. 4/23/12 2:36pm Dan from Toronto:

Irene, this Levon Helm stuff is tremendous, thanks for the rawkin tunes!
  Mon. 4/23/12 2:37pm v k:

Glen Jones Radio Program did a great Levon tribute set yesterday - fantastic
Mon. 4/23/12 2:37pm Van in DC:

Just back...looks like I'll have some archive catching up to do.

@100% pure dc pat - nope, didn't get the fries. Watching my salt intake lately...
  Mon. 4/23/12 2:37pm Parq:

Birdies! Consider this the obligatory Trouble reference.
Mon. 4/23/12 2:38pm Sean in Bristol, UK:

@ Brian, thanks for the info, my Amazon wish list has been expanded, I am ashamed to say that I had not heard of Leon Helms, again our wonderful Irene has again expanded my music knowledge,
Mon. 4/23/12 2:40pm Sean in Bristol, UK:

Sorry, Levon Helm
Mon. 4/23/12 2:50pm Brian in UK:

Irene, tell that Welsh Williams to calm down. See you on top of Snowdon, Scott!!
Avatar    Mon. 4/23/12 2:57pm Irene:

Thanks for all the great comments, folks! See you next Monday.
Mon. 4/23/12 2:59pm Van in DC:

Thanks Irene!

Much enjoyment!
  Tue. 4/24/12 3:46pm don:

Isn't "Pottery Pie" a Geoff and Maria album, not just Geoff?
  Wed. 4/25/12 5:16pm Irene:

Don, you're correct. I played that track off a CD Geoff gave me, which compiles some of his favorite tracks. The CD liner lists him but not Maria, and I quickly typed in the title, meaning to look later. I'm presuming she doesn't appear on this track, which is why Geoff listed it this way.
