BEEF! BEEF! BEEF! BEEF! BEEF! BEEF! BEEF!

CHAMPIONS!:

NUMBA ONE! NUMBA ONE!

Andy in Iowa City:

Actually, no. You beat them. You're losing against WOBC out of Oberlin. Had the lead solidly until last night when their numbers started surging big. If 'FMU is behind at midnight tonight, the station doesn't advance to the next round. It's all a little, silly, maybe. But 'FMU will always be the best in our ears and hearts!

the more I hear you all talking about this "contest" the more it sounds like an advertisement for that website. I refuse to visit that website !!!
  6:15pm
Andy in Iowa City:

I wouldn't have bothered with the site either if not to show a little 'FMU love. But don't think I'll be going back after this "Madness" thing is over the way it's been handled by Soundtap. Long live 'FMU! For those who care to help out, signup at soundtap.com/madness and click play to listen to WFMU. You can listen for up to 90 mins/day to your favorite station to go toward that station's total.

this is such an info-mercial ! When will it end ? I want to listen when you are not selling your airtime to a website...
  6:18pm
Michael:

There's no non-comercial radio that I can handle listening to all the time. I usually rotate between WFMU, Resonance FM, and Freies Radio Stuttgart.

CHAMPIONS!:

THIS AIN'T NO POPULARITY CONTEST! THIS IS LIFE AND DEATH!
  6:24pm
Andy in Iowa City:

The great thing about 'FMU is that it's truly independent and free from any corporate/institutional influence. How many stations can honestly say that? It's one of the reasons so many of us are happy to give every year during the Marathon (awesome to see the goal exceeded this year).
  6:24pm
Asanarama:

When I was young I used to dislike things solely because of their popularity. Eventually I realized that was just as stupid as liking things solely because of their popularity.
I don't see any advertisements on soundtap. What's their deal?
  6:26pm
sudo:

I think the 90 minute/listener/day limit is a significant handicap. FMU has so many listeners who seem to be on the comment boards almost 24/7...

cglenn:

wfmu has really brightened up my life that last 3 or 4 years. I have no cable t.v. and listen to wfmu more then anything to fill my time. I read too.
  6:34pm
DPCD:

The fact that people like Chris T. have worked in radio so long and know how to play guitar (after most of us gave up on that dream), work there for free- well, how can we not love you?
And who cares what some website says when most of their audience probably has a 5 second attention span?
  6:35pm
sallybundy:

aview is too snarky... all snipe no content. I love wfmu.best station in the nation.
  6:43pm
Lewis:

what I am curious about is how Oberlin radio has overtaken fmu! an upset in the second round. (and this from an oberlin alum and very long time fmu listener)
  6:44pm
Lewis:

it seems like fun to me!
  6:47pm
Lewis:

Oberlin Ohio is a very small town and a small college (do they have cleveland in their listening area? - I doubt it)
  6:48pm
sallybundy:

Oberlin, really? Can't figure that.... wfmu seems so much more international!
  6:48pm
Andy in Iowa City:

Wow... Soundtap guy is really making it all seem so legit.
  6:48pm
KevinfromBayRidge:

We're behind but The Best Show can bail us out tonight!
  6:49pm
Mike Sin:

One of the most amazing aspects of WFMU is that its steady growth and reach has happened very organically -- a great study of purity and simplicity. WFMU's increasing popularity has NOT occurred because it "signed to major label," was bought by Google, established an alliance with some celebrity product, etc. The listeners give their money year after year and all the money goes directly to operating costs and shrewd technological investments... The relationship between the audience and the "product" is clear, simple, and very real... Without the hidden motives of the corporate advertising con... Incredible that this could happen in the middle of the NYC market....
  6:49pm
Andy in Iowa City:

You launched the contest before having all your tech/security issues ironed out? Brilliant.
  6:50pm
DPCD:

Cynical is right! At least he's honest. I have to confess finding WFMU on someone's blog years ago, so maybe fine if a contest gets some kids' minds on the real world outside of video games. Good luck!
  6:51pm
Andy in Iowa City:

Mike, you nailed it. It's a beautiful thing.
  6:52pm
Eric:

I always listen to WFMU when I'm coding!
  6:52pm
Listener Dave from Seattle:

I'm a coder that listens to WFMU. You can listen to a lot of radio when you sit in front of a computer all day.
  6:54pm
Jack:

His site says they can check to make sure duplicate accounts aren't created for voting. How do they keep tabs on duplicates?
  6:54pm
sudo:

I'll admit to having spent hours playing video games and listening at the same time >.>
