fancy meeting you lot here :)

G'morning Julie & listeners, feels like the first time listening live in circa 3000 years
  3:04am
mike noble in dc:

hey everyone! so this website soundtap.com is running a non commercial radio march madness bracket. soundtap.com/madness
  3:04am
mike noble in dc:

you should go to that website and sign up for an account and give julie and wfmu a listen through that website (rather than through wfmu.org or itunes or however you normally listen)
Avatar 🦇 3:05am
Julie:

@OD good to see you! Glad you survived St. Patricks :)
  3:05am

you can log up to 90 minutes of listening per day to add to wfmu's total.

We are being CRUSHED over there
  3:06am
mike noble in dc:

we're currently in the last day of round 2. wfmu won round 1 w/o really trying (because it seems soundtap didn't notify anyone that this tourney was even happening)
  3:07am
mike noble in dc:

most of yesterday, day 2 of round 2, WFMU had a 10-20 hour lead on WOBC-Oberlin. somehow in the past 8-12 hours WOBC managed to turn that around and they now have a 57 hour lead! a 70+ point turnaround!
  3:08am
mike noble in dc:

it's the hottest competition in the entire tournament so far too, no other station approaches the #'s wobc and wfmu are racking up.
  3:08am
other david:

survived/turned into zombie, same difference!

I listened on Soundtap yesterday, audio worked for a while then became choppy and unlistenable. I call shenanigans.

Mark T in VT:

This radio station battle of the bands thing is very silly and I am suspicious of the what is behind it all. But if we want WFMU to "win" I suppose we could just log in to this soundtap thing and mute it and go about our regular business. including listening to WFMU the way we normally would.

  3:39am
fred:

Could soundtap reduce the bandwidth costs for the station if it takes off as an alternate way of listening?
  3:40am
other david:

Yep the main thing seems to be free advertising for soundtap, but meh, I'll forget about it whenever WFMU is out

Enjoying this set a lot, Julie

Thanks OD.. I am trying to explain to another Irishman that he CAN listen, for some reason he is having trouble :/
  3:45am
Rob W:

Re: Soundtap contest: WOBC is clearly stuffing the audio ballot box... they are beating FMU handily but FMU is second overall and substantially ahead of the third place station overall (KFJC).
Poor innocent freeform WCBN Ann Arbor (U. of Michigan), my alma mater, which has to be among the top ten college stations if you ask me (unbiased of course), didn't resort to any such chicanery - and absurdly lost to KSCU Santa Clara University in the opening round. Santa Clara University - ?
The fix is in, I tell you!
Avatar 🦇 3:47am
Julie:

I think Ken was a WCBN guy wasn't he?
  3:47am

Unfortunately a lot of these online things are very subject to gaming

  3:53am
mike noble in dc:

rob w -- i forget if i've asked you this before. did you know paul fowlie at cbn?
  3:53am
Pie:

It may not even be something on his end. Never rule out ISP chicanery when even simple things fail
  3:55am
mike noble in dc:

also rob, your show is quite popular on soundtap. that's something, right?
  3:55am
Rob W:

And on an earnest note re: the contest - it's cute but the concept is contrary to the spirit of freeform radio at least, where one of the defining concepts is that stations like WFMU put people and shows on the air that we think are worthwhile even if they may not appeal to the largest possible audience.
  3:56am
Rob W:

As for my show being popular on Soundtap... er... like I said, it must be rigged!
Avatar 🦇 3:57am

Avatar 🦇 3:58am
Julie:

hah I dunno I will try that
  4:02am
mike noble in dc:

if you look at it another way... this contest is encouraging people to listen more. i found myself listening to several college stations i'd never tuned into before. i put on several losers and underdogs trying to help their totals.
  4:02am
Glovanie:

I had to do my special dance ;P
  4:03am
mike noble in dc:

when a KDVS fan was bad mouthing WFMU on the bodah comment board, I actually found myself giving kdvs 90 minutes of play. mostly because i'd like to see them win so wfmu can crush them in round 3!
  4:04am
mike noble in dc:

if it didn't have a 90 minute limit, the contest could encourage people to listen to those unpopular shows, or at least the shows they don't normally care for.
  4:04am
mike noble in dc:

you'd have to turn love of station x into love of every single program on station x.
  4:10am
fred von helsing:

I would recommend the flash link to people. It's very reliable. Also for archives you get a great clickable playlist function too. Just remind them to click on the "f" icon-button if they see it (flashblock).
  4:10am
Rob W:

@Mike Noble - I know Paul Fowlie from work but I don't think I knew him in Ann Arbor. Two FMU alumni, Bart Plantenga of "Wreck this Mess" and the Professor from "Audio Kitchen" both have WCBN roots.
