Typically it'd be sodium laurYL sulfate (Gardol) that'd be used in toothpastes. Shampoos typically contain either that or sodium laurETH sulfate (sodium lauryl ether sulfate), sometimes both. The ether sulfate (the "-eth" version, the ethoxylated one) is milder and more soluble.

In toothpaste the major alternative to sodium lauryl sulfate is sodium lauryl sarcosinate. I think that might've been Gl-7. It's milder and more expensive than sodium lauryl sulfate.
