A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Loretta Lynn carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Listener comments!

Tue. 10/18/11 9:05am Brian in UK:

Hello trouble. Thrilling weather changes here from morning that will not receive daylight to crystal clear skies. Is it my imagination or is there a slight curve to the picture.
  Tue. 10/18/11 9:07am glenn:

yikes. the green on grey is impossible to read.
Tue. 10/18/11 9:08am Brian in UK:

glenn did you listen to julies show earlier. Wall to wall Kinks.
  Tue. 10/18/11 9:09am glenn:

don't tell trouble, but i'm listening to it right now.
  Tue. 10/18/11 9:11am Lucky:

Green on grey looks great on my screen. Oh! I hear JC resident Perry Robinson!
  Tue. 10/18/11 9:12am trouble:

  Tue. 10/18/11 9:13am glenn:

i sorry. but it's THE KINKS, ya know?
  Tue. 10/18/11 9:17am trouble:

  Tue. 10/18/11 9:24am pierre:

i had the chance to show my (crappy) work at Anette Messager once, before trying to pass an art school contest, she was very nice and looked at it while smoking vogue cigarettes, with classy attitude.
Tue. 10/18/11 9:25am Adrian in London:

Morning Trouble and fellow listeners. Here's a link to a story in today's Guardian about how knitting clubs in schools are attracting 'cool' boys. Thought it'd appeal to the crafty types here and would be appropriate given the artwork:
  Tue. 10/18/11 9:26am Guuzbourg:

Morning Trouble. Morning Adrian
  Tue. 10/18/11 9:29am Hauswölf:

Meine housecat loves ziss show.

Tue. 10/18/11 9:39am Dave in SoDak:

Morning, Trubbs. That pic is absolutely, positively -- I'm speechless. Love it.
  Tue. 10/18/11 9:42am sugarwolf:

I got stuck in lots of traffic at Rhinebeck :(

Online, I saw a vendor had project bags made with TUBE MAP fabric, but she didn't have any at her stall.

I bought yarn and now I have no money for the record fair.

Tue. 10/18/11 9:43am Brian in UK:

Thought geese came in skeins.
  Tue. 10/18/11 9:44am trouble:

hey dave in so dak, glad you love it! i do too...hey sugarwolf, i didn't buy a thing except food, what is wrong with me? well a giant stash perhaps? there is always a bargain to be had at the record fair, don't despair
  Tue. 10/18/11 9:46am trouble:

the annette messager/birds in jackets piece is called the pensioners. her work is all a wee bit scary and tender at the same time, and a whole lot abject
  Tue. 10/18/11 9:50am Lucky:

Yeah! Music doesn't rock any harder than the Memphis Jug Band!
  Tue. 10/18/11 9:51am ?:

Memphis Jug Band, better then caffeine this morning!
  Tue. 10/18/11 9:52am northguineahills:

(let me try that again), Memphis Jug Band, better then caffeine this morning, (might actually need more caffeine)
  Tue. 10/18/11 9:53am 65% dc pat:

yeah, Petra!
  Tue. 10/18/11 9:53am sugarwolf:

I saw a neat book called What Would Madame Defarge Knit but I was out of money then. Oh well, next year.

I did get the new Lela Nargi book Astounding Knits. So many cool knitted art projects.
Tue. 10/18/11 9:53am Brian in UK:

That was a jingle from the old pirates based in the North Sea circa 1966/67.
  Tue. 10/18/11 9:53am jamesie:

hello - pledged...
  Tue. 10/18/11 9:54am 65% dc pat:

forgot about this album, brilliant.
  Tue. 10/18/11 9:54am jamesie:

Radio London 266 on the medium waveband. Life would have beeen very different for me without it, like WFMU
  Tue. 10/18/11 9:55am healey:

good fall morning to trouble and to all!
Tue. 10/18/11 9:56am Chris from Stroud England:

Same dude. You know there was a thing where Johnny Walker used to pretend to go off air at 12 ish...then play another tune about 15 minutes later....magical times........as is WFMU!
Tue. 10/18/11 9:56am Brian in UK:

Too true, jamesie. you know I bought some raffle tickets last weekend specifically for the number 266 as it reminded me of Radio london I won.
  Tue. 10/18/11 9:58am northguineahills:

Could have swore that was Hope Sandoval, boy was I wrong!
  Tue. 10/18/11 10:02am trouble:

hey jamesie, you rock!
  Tue. 10/18/11 10:06am 65% dc pat:

man, Petra sent me down a Who road just now, looking at all the old videos on youtube. Amazing. I'm back.
  Tue. 10/18/11 10:06am Jennique:

Trouble, there is small display here at AMNH that is an offshoot of the main bird hall called NEW YORK CITY BIRDS. There a couple of cases that have large white panels with local birds pinned to them that look just like your featured art piece. Only they don't have little sweaters. I think the museum should dress all the animals in all the dioramas in knitted wear.
  Tue. 10/18/11 10:09am glenn:

more dressed up birds, and other critters. - http://www.zombiepinups.com/monique/
  Tue. 10/18/11 10:09am Marmalade Kitty:

oily fish vegetables and vitamins kids!
  Tue. 10/18/11 10:12am Marmalade Kitty:

get well soon Trouble! I'm the same
  Tue. 10/18/11 10:13am trouble:

jennique, at least we can hope the birds in the winter scene diaoramas could wear sweaters. of course i could volunteer to knit them, but you know that i am a tad behind in my animal knitting...so many sweaters for man and beast alike and so little time...
  Tue. 10/18/11 10:15am trouble:

marmalade kitty, my house is oily fish, veggies and vitamin central! and still we were all hit with this fall pestilence. not enough sleep is our problem...
  Tue. 10/18/11 10:16am Jennique:

Trouble - I think the whale and the giant squid need sweaters.
  Tue. 10/18/11 10:16am Marmalade Kitty:

very thoughtful thanks! said mr. & mrs. birdie
  Tue. 10/18/11 10:18am Captain Nemo:

I think they need killin'.
  Tue. 10/18/11 10:19am trouble:

jennique, i am the girl for the job, since i am a fan of giant yarn and giant needles, perhaps i could write a grant for that and move into the museum for a month.
  Tue. 10/18/11 10:20am Marmalade Kitty:

I'm sure all the luxurious junk and processed industrial type lifestyle is going to wipe our immunity systems out this winter 2012!!!!
  Tue. 10/18/11 10:25am Marmalade Kitty:

or maybe Harold camping is right? He predicts the end of the world sometime this week!
  Tue. 10/18/11 10:26am glenn:

will he blame it on bad math again, when it doesn't happen?
  Tue. 10/18/11 10:27am trouble:

i just finished the most amazing book" a distant shore" by caryl phillips. so outstandingly done, i am looking at the world in a different way now
  Tue. 10/18/11 10:27am kwhitehead:

Chico sounds a bit like Robert Wyatt.
  Tue. 10/18/11 10:28am Jennique:

Trouble - ya know, you just might have something there with the whole grant idea. If the museum has it's own origami department (which it actually does) then it surely could use a resident knitter.
  Tue. 10/18/11 10:34am trouble:

wow an origami department, that is amazing! you know jennique we still all talk about our lovely visit with you there, we all feel very fortunate to have had the special tour, especially dj icepack
  Tue. 10/18/11 10:35am glenn:

the birds remind me of one of p.g. wodehouse's great lines " if brains were silk, he wouldn't have enough material to knit a demisole for a canary".
  Tue. 10/18/11 10:36am Kayt:

bom dia trouble. [ah-sha-do, sheek-o mello]
  Tue. 10/18/11 10:36am jamesie:

are we going to hear some icepack cello music on air soon?
  Tue. 10/18/11 10:40am trouble:

jamesi, i am thrilled that we have a cello in the house, and i hope so!
  Tue. 10/18/11 10:47am Jennique:

Trouble, you are always welcome back. Anytime. There's a big Christmas party under the whale for employees and their guests. Keep that in mind.
And Duane's show is superduperawesome-o.
  Tue. 10/18/11 10:51am trouble:

wow party under a whale, very nice
  Tue. 10/18/11 10:59am Jennique:

Whoa, for a moment I thought this was Liz Berg's show. Sounds like her background music.
  Tue. 10/18/11 11:04am trouble:

jennique, that was liz berg's remix from the sun ra disc that we did for the october stealth fundraiser. 100$ donation gets you that rockin amazing cd
  Tue. 10/18/11 11:05am moose:

wow Jennique you work at the Natural History museum? so important to me when i was a little kid, especially the groovy carpeted hall of minerals
  Tue. 10/18/11 11:07am trouble:

so guy's i am only at 38% of my goal, perhaps we could push up the total to 50% today, pretty please?
  Tue. 10/18/11 11:07am trouble:

hey moose!
  Tue. 10/18/11 11:08am Priscilla:

bowling and batman theme!
  Tue. 10/18/11 11:11am Vivian:

Trouble, I'll add some green to the tip jar, just has to be later in today.
  Tue. 10/18/11 11:13am Vivian:

Whoops, meant later on in the day! It's always a learning experience with your show, discovering new artists and books. I checked out a summary of A Distant Place, will have to locate a copy. In addition to music, of course!
  Tue. 10/18/11 11:15am Jennique:

Moose - yes, yes I work at the AMNH. The hall of minerals has not changed, thankfully, and still has 1970's mood lighting and carpeted walls.
  Tue. 10/18/11 11:16am trouble:

thanks so much vivian! i loved " a distant shore" and am looking forward to reading more from caryl phillips. i hear he lives in NYC, maybe i can snag him for an on air chat
  Tue. 10/18/11 11:21am jk:

hey Trouble, sorry to be that guy but I think "Tirude Zeneba" might be "Tirudel Zeneba"
  Tue. 10/18/11 11:25am trouble:

thanks jk! i rely on you all for proofing!
  Tue. 10/18/11 11:25am still b/p:

Hear about the baaad chapter involving the National Book Award for Young People's Lit.?
  Tue. 10/18/11 11:27am jk:

it was such a good song, I just bought the record
Tue. 10/18/11 11:29am Adrian in London:

Ah, Coralie. Lovely stuff. I hope she's still not driving around, trying to find your studio, Trouble :(
  Tue. 10/18/11 11:29am moose:

i do pop in now and then still but am in constant fear of impending renovation
i just want to live in that room, tumbling around forever

i'm listening guiltily, too poor to donate for real for real
Tue. 10/18/11 11:29am Dave in SoDak:

Git yer francophile on! Yay!
  Tue. 10/18/11 11:30am βrian:

@b/p. Maybe it's just the librarian in me, but have they never heard of an ISBN?
  Tue. 10/18/11 11:31am trouble:

still b/p that sounds like a game of telephone! ouch.
Tue. 10/18/11 11:31am aaron in chicago:

this nicolas comment track sounds like a really sexy Pimsleur tape
  Tue. 10/18/11 11:35am trouble:

yes adrian that was one of the strangest live guest non moments...
  Tue. 10/18/11 11:39am still b/p:

...or never heard of any simple sensible confirmation step of any kind, evidently. Someone would even repeat details of a sandwich order back to you over the phone for cryin' out loud.
And then the malletheads ask the mistakenly-announced author to help clean it up...that's rich.
  Tue. 10/18/11 11:39am Marmalade Kitty:

Great show today!!
  Tue. 10/18/11 11:39am trouble:

thans marmalade!
  Tue. 10/18/11 11:44am trouble:

  Tue. 10/18/11 11:46am Jennique:

  Tue. 10/18/11 11:50am StuBot:

Tue. 10/18/11 11:50am Adrian in London:

Facebook? Come over to Twitter, it's great fun!
  Tue. 10/18/11 11:50am Jennique:

  Tue. 10/18/11 11:53am northguineahills:

Need to get this Meg Baird (when I'm employed again)
  Tue. 10/18/11 11:54am trouble:

facebook, i know so old fashioned. but i liked the idea of listing books and films with pics and all, comments. adrian i need to talk to you about twitter. do you do tumblr too?
Tue. 10/18/11 11:57am Adrian in London:

No not Tumblr but I'm thinking of doing one compilng incidents of women artists being compared with Kate Bush or Björk. Email me about Twitter and I'll answer any questions. In more than 140 characters…
Tue. 10/18/11 11:59am dave in vermont:
