Live performance by Kalli

Drawing comparisons to dark pop masters like Jeff Buckley and Bon Iver, Icelandic singer Kalli (aka Karl Henry) is releasing his 2nd solo effort in August, which he traveled to Nashville to record. Kalli, the former frontman for Without Gravity (formerly Tenderfoot, who played live on WFMU March 1, 2004), had always wanted to record in Nashville. He says, "Far from being traditional country songs I really wanted to mix them up with certain country music elements." The resulting work is a dreamy melding of dark folk and alt country. Kalli played live on Irene's WFMU show.

J J:

Welcome back.
  12:40pm
BSI:

okay...... is THIS the afterlife?
  12:43pm
fred:

Thanks to all involved, this was fast.
  12:46pm
fred:

Though I see I missed Steve Coleman. If that one featured Jen Shyu, I'm bummed
  12:54pm
Irene:

I'll be playing a lot more of that Steve Coleman Band in the future. Just say them for the first time at the Newport Jazz Fest and was completely blown away! One of the nice revelations there.
  12:55pm
Sean Gostage:

Hi Irene,
Welcome back, loving the Chris Koch track
  1:03pm
fred:

Another thing to look forward to, as if your show needed more incentives. Jen Shyu is the vocalist, at least she was the last time I saw them. Her solo performances look worth checking out, from my only experience, throwing Chinese music in the mix to very good effect
  1:05pm
Irene:

Yes, Jen was a real standout. I have many pictures of them and the other bands I saw up on Flicker: http://www.flickr.com/irene_trudel
  1:13pm
Looms:

Ah, these technical problems...
Maybe you shouldn't have played this Chris Koch ;)
  1:19pm
fred:

Irene, I saw Steve Coleman and Five Elements play with Opus Akoben a couple of times and that was really great. That was when Tyshawn Sorey was the drummer, and both were great performances, with very imaginative rhythms and a drive that complemented/thwarted Coleman's abstract leanings very well.
  1:57pm
Mike East:

Nice soundtrack for an overcast day. I'm glad you worked out the technical difficulties.
  2:08pm
Davice:

Great track from Jeff Buckley!
  2:08pm
Mike East:

anyone know anything about a Jeff Buckley or Tim Buckley movie coming out? I started getting phone calls for prop rentals at work, but I haven't heard anything.
  2:12pm
Looms:

@Mike: yes, a biopic about Jeff Buckey will be directed by Jake Scott later this year.
  2:14pm
fishmonkeystew:

Brown Bird! They are going to be playing a free show at a local street fair in October. I'm stoked!
  2:16pm
Mike East:

Cool, Thanks Looms. Lost Highway, btw, probably my favorite Hank Williams tunes. I love Dylan and Joan Biaz singin it in Don't Look Back.
  2:16pm
Irene:

Ooh, I'd better look into getting them into the studio then! They're really great.
  2:19pm
Davice:

Irene - How about some Peter Biederman? Good rainy day music.
  2:21pm
Richard from Venezuela:

Just checking in. lost the jeff buckley song. :(
Thanks god for the archives.

Greetings Irene and all the listeners.
  2:23pm
fishmonkeystew:

The street fair (the October First Friday Festival) is in Putnam, CT , which is about 3 hours from NYC. Brown Bird is from the Providence, RI area, and I bet they would be willing to make the drive to WFMU just for the opportunity.
  2:45pm
Jim Thomson:

kudos for beggars farm. that's a deep cut.
  2:52pm
david in denver:

wow i haven't heard this since high school 30 something years ago!
  2:53pm
Richard from Venezuela:

This set was awesome. Jethro and Nektar highlights.
