Mo, I was born and raised in Manhattan, and when we outgrew our apartment, we went to Staten Island for the elbow room. It was great there for about 13 years, but long story short, toward the end we knew it was time to leave the city altogether. We had always fantasized about living in the Hudson Valley, and that's what we did. The only regret is the epic commute to our jobs in the city.
  8:17pm
texas scott:

dear monica, just move upstate and open a second-hand store, while living on a weed farm.
that's what i would do.

I went into totally online teaching five years ago, and within two years made more per year than at my highest year working full-time for NYU. I'm planning on moving to a lower-cost and lower-tax jurisdiction in the next couple of years. I've been in NYC since 1979, but I can visit whenever I want.

I travel around. As long as I have a solid internet connection, I'm fine. When in NYC, I'm normally in Brooklyn. I compared various states for declaring domicile based on various cost-of-living and tax and policy factors. There are actually various handbooks about that -- comparing the 50 states as domiciles, updated yearly.
