Options August 10, 2011: Third not-quite-annual DISCO* DANCE PARTY!

Summertime always reminds me of listening to Ken "Spider" Webb and Ricky Ricardo and, of course the Chief Rocker Frankie Crocker on WBLS. In that spirit, I invite you to turn of the air conditioning, throw open the windows, and get ready to sweat! I'm busting out the 7" AND 12" vinyl and spinning your favorite classic jams, along with some little-heard gems that will make you move your feet to the beat in the heat. Guaranteed at least one "I haven't heard this in 30 years" or "why haven't I heard this before?!" moment for every listener! The string sections and hi-hats are at the ready - let's groove tonight!

*Some songs may strike you as more hip-hop, or some other genre, as opposed to strictly "disco." I'm keeping the lines blurry and using "disco" as a catch-all for fun dance music from the mid-70s to the early '80s.

Between Hustle and Saturday Night Fever (1975-77) disco went from speciality club music (early 70s) to a dominant mainstream genre. Pre 75, it was a speciality in clubs among blacks, latinos, and gays, partly a rebellion against then-dominent male-hetero rock with its anti-dance anti-pop leanings....
