Sorry Charlie, only the truly vicious predators can give out high interest loans!

Money is More Delicious than Ever - On WFMU
Wed. 3/9/11 3:05pm Richard from Venezuela:

Greetings to irwin, trent and amanda.
  Wed. 3/9/11 3:05pm glenn:

unfortunately, charlie has lots of willing customers, most of whom wouldn't know compound interest if it bit them on the ass.
  Wed. 3/9/11 3:10pm Danne D:

Good luck Irwin!
Crush Ken!
  Wed. 3/9/11 3:11pm Ike:

Hey you dirty pinko Commies in Europe:
$15 = only €10.79 right now
$75 = €53.93 now
$180 = €129.44
$30.42/month = €21.88/month
  Wed. 3/9/11 3:12pm nestor:

you still have the best voice in radio. totes.
Wed. 3/9/11 3:12pm Adam from Lynnwood, Washington:

1-800-989-9368 or wfmu.org. ;-)
  Wed. 3/9/11 3:12pm PMD:

I'm gonna pledge, I swear!
  Wed. 3/9/11 3:13pm j:

not the first time someone pledged for finewine at a weird time this marathon
  Wed. 3/9/11 3:14pm AnAnonymousParty:

Suppose I had $75 in my pocket and was considering spending it either on candy and gum, or WFMU. What should I do?
  Wed. 3/9/11 3:15pm Listener David:

Amanda is the shiznit!!!!
  Wed. 3/9/11 3:16pm $75:

give me to Irwin
Wed. 3/9/11 3:16pm aaron in chicago:

amanda isnt repellent so much as.. almost supernaturally distracting
  Wed. 3/9/11 3:18pm dave:

Spend the 75 bucks on FMU; when you get the Amanda CD, play it to a room full of people who have candy and gum. Maybe play it in a candy store. When they drop their candy and gum and flee, collect your new candy and gum.

With WFMU, you have your cake and you eat it too.
  Wed. 3/9/11 3:18pm Danne D:

Well AnAnonymous party if you pledge to Ken's show your $75 would get you some tasty scotcheroos.

Pledging to Dave Emory's show would get you an "Anti-Fascist Snack Food Item"
  Wed. 3/9/11 3:18pm glenn:

i guess it depends, ananonymousparty. do you have a sweet tooth or a sweet ear?
  Wed. 3/9/11 3:18pm Danne D:

(for $75)
  Wed. 3/9/11 3:19pm ?:

Amanda's just... old. That is, it was kind of entertaining, even humorous the first few times you hear her but eventually just gets irritating. Personally, more than once I've muted the stream and switched to listening to something else for a while when she's come on.
  Wed. 3/9/11 3:19pm gum & candy:

we don't like Irwin.
give him the cash.
Wed. 3/9/11 3:20pm Matt from Springfield:

@Danne: According to Joe McG, the "anti-fascist snack food item" is: sunflower seeds.
  Wed. 3/9/11 3:20pm Robert:

It would appear Amanda's favortie word (or that of her ghostwriter brother) was "stink". That's part of why her output can be characterized as what a couple of WMFU air people refer to as "irritainment".
Wed. 3/9/11 3:21pm Matt from Springfield:

Ah, Amanda dances the line between metropolitan sophisication, and primitive swagger, with such finesse.
Wed. 3/9/11 3:21pm Richard from Venezuela:

Amanda right now <3
  Wed. 3/9/11 3:22pm Robert:

She's lactating now?
Wed. 3/9/11 3:22pm Amanda Fan Club President:

kiss the collective cookie butthole and fork over the dough already people.
  Wed. 3/9/11 3:23pm ginger tim:

How can you not want to be 8 years old and be Amanda??
Wed. 3/9/11 3:23pm dave from ks:

,,,can i getta refund?
  Wed. 3/9/11 3:23pm Wondering:

Does Amanda get royalties?
  Wed. 3/9/11 3:23pm AnAnonymousParty:

Yeah, but then I'll have to add 'listening to WFMU' to my ever growing list of things I can't do while chewing gum at the same time.
  Wed. 3/9/11 3:25pm Peter K.:

Amanda's backing track on that one was "The Glamorous Life" by Sheila E.
  Wed. 3/9/11 3:26pm larzini:

Amanda's swagger destroyed that Sheila E. beat
  Wed. 3/9/11 3:26pm "Amanda Scraps":

NOOOOOOOOO!
(sobs into Don't Mess With The Power Child cover)
Wed. 3/9/11 3:27pm Matt from Springfield:

@Peter: Thanks! I always like to know the backing tracks of Amanda recordings.
Wed. 3/9/11 3:27pm Brian in Madison, WI:

Hoof and mouth this year should be two hours of karaoke to Amanda.
  Wed. 3/9/11 3:27pm ?:

Is Amanda over? Is it safe to turn the stream back on?
  Wed. 3/9/11 3:28pm !:

it's still on!
  Wed. 3/9/11 3:28pm Danne D:

(hopefully not Bolivian Sunflower seeds...)
http://www.tni.org/es/archives/act/18444
  Wed. 3/9/11 3:29pm G:

Amanda's a warlock-ess. Haterz drule.
Wed. 3/9/11 3:29pm Brian in Madison, WI:

I'm starting an Amanda cover band. Anyone know a singer who can pull it off?
  Wed. 3/9/11 3:29pm dave:

?: Irwin said he was going to keep playing Amanda until you pledge. Let us know when you've done that, we'll pass along the word, and he'll stop playing Amanda.
  Wed. 3/9/11 3:33pm Keanu:

Don't go under 50 mph!
Wed. 3/9/11 3:33pm chris in madison:

I want IN on this AMANDA Cover band...
Wed. 3/9/11 3:33pm chris in madison:

GAH! Does the $75 put me in the runnign for the THOMAS CD!?!
Wed. 3/9/11 3:34pm Brian in Madison, WI:

Welcome to the band, Chris.

Anyone else?
Wed. 3/9/11 3:35pm chris in madison:

@Brian: I don't play a thing (YET), but we could definitely get the Project Lodge to have (tolerate) us...
  Wed. 3/9/11 3:35pm dc pat:

ok, I'm in. Why don't we just back up Amanda??
Wed. 3/9/11 3:36pm Matt from Springfield:

I can record vocals and/or beats on a cassette, and mail it to Madison for later mixing!
I also am willing to tour as part of an Amanda tribute band!
  Wed. 3/9/11 3:37pm PMD:

I think the Sharpling factor is kicking in. People know how much he raised and think they don't have to pledge.
  Wed. 3/9/11 3:39pm G:

There was no Scharpling factor last night in his week two, supposedly. I read in comments late last night that he raised like 95K during that shift.
Wed. 3/9/11 3:39pm Brian in Madison, WI:

Lot's of good ideas for the Amanda cover band which will eventually back up Amanda and tour. During the tour we can stop by Irwin's show.
Wed. 3/9/11 3:40pm Adam from Lynnwood, Washington:

I wonder if you might be correct, pmd. I am certain that those people are chumps.
  Wed. 3/9/11 3:42pm βrian:

Now if we could only get the Koch brothers to kick in a few hundred million.
  Wed. 3/9/11 3:42pm Lance Link:

Secret Chumps.
Wed. 3/9/11 3:43pm Adam from Lynnwood, Washington:

HOOT HOOOOOT HOOOT HOT!
  Wed. 3/9/11 3:43pm glenn:

next best thing to an amanda tribute band is.......... a shaggs tribute band. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eE7tQIe1I0A
  Wed. 3/9/11 3:43pm minnesota jeff:

Doesn't JM in the AM bring in more than anyone though? Either way Scharpling didn't raise $500,000 which is still needed.
  Wed. 3/9/11 3:43pm The Man:

@βrian: What's in it for me? My accountant wants to know.
  Wed. 3/9/11 3:44pm pete:

this should be on heavy rotation in big stores like target and k-mart
  Wed. 3/9/11 3:44pm βrian:

@TM: Fuzzy warm feelings and good music.
Wed. 3/9/11 3:45pm Adam from Lynnwood, Washington:

Better yet, Matt Groening. He actually loves esoteric musicians and bands.
  Wed. 3/9/11 3:45pm G:

For marathons, morning drive JM in the AM hauls in the biggest bucks. Scharpling's Goyim in the PM is the biggest freeform fundraiser.
Wed. 3/9/11 3:45pm chris in madison:

Eff a Kock Bro. All we need is half a drop of that $2K Wisconsin Poet Laureate position that's about to get cut and we'd be SET!
Wed. 3/9/11 3:46pm Brian in Madison, WI:

The Man - you can be our Bobby Heenan.

'Amanda vs. The Koch Bros' is our first album title
  Wed. 3/9/11 3:48pm Chuck:

Ir-winning!
  Wed. 3/9/11 3:49pm Charlie Sheen:

Failure is not an option.
  Wed. 3/9/11 3:50pm minnesota jeff:

I can't hear JM in AM - what sort of show is it? Is it just a straight laced Jewish talk show?
  Wed. 3/9/11 3:50pm brycepunk:

I forgot to click that I wanted the WF-MU sticker, and didn't want to click "back" so as to avoid accidentally pledging twice. Any way to still get one of those? My car needs a new sticker.
  Wed. 3/9/11 3:51pm βrian:

Go, Chris Chez Madison. "Funding From the Dairyland."
  Wed. 3/9/11 3:52pm G:

More or less yes, Jeff. Hebrew pop music, interviews on Jewish issues, etc. I see bumper stickers for the show all over in Jewish neighborhoods here where I am in Brooklyn. I believe JM in the AM does stream, and there is a link to that somewhere on the FMU site.
  Wed. 3/9/11 3:52pm Neil Diamond:

Play me.
  Wed. 3/9/11 3:54pm Neil Diamond:

I graduated from Midwood high school, here in the heart of JM in the AM over-the-air territory.
  Wed. 3/9/11 3:54pm Ike:

@Brycepunk I *think* the sticker is automatic. You'll get that for sure, unless you clicked "no swag whatsoever" or whatnot.
  Wed. 3/9/11 3:55pm minnesota jeff:

G - I believe onetime I stumbled onto its own individual website hosted by WFMU in a similar looking format the mainpage for WFMU.org - it just seems strange to me how its sorta hidden away from the rest of the station.
  Wed. 3/9/11 3:57pm brycepunk:

Ike, it said "you clicked "no swag"", which I didn't realize.
  Wed. 3/9/11 3:57pm dc pat:

did not know the FLips covered this. One of my fave tunes...man. is that Coyne singin?
  Wed. 3/9/11 3:57pm G:

That's partly because Orthodox Jews are slightly less openminded than the average FMUer. But the freeform part of FMU is not not exactly Judenrein. :-)
  Wed. 3/9/11 3:57pm secret secret:

Wed. 3/9/11 3:58pm Dead Corporate Eyes:

what now?
  Wed. 3/9/11 3:59pm Michael Pollard:

Skeeters!
  Wed. 3/9/11 3:59pm 12539:

@brycepunk You can email Joe McGasko (jmcgasko@wfmu.org) about swag issues.
  Wed. 3/9/11 3:59pm FCC:

Thanks, Irwin. [patting his head]
  Wed. 3/9/11 4:00pm Ike:

@MN Jeff, there's very little crossover. They've shared the FM signals forever, but web streaming offered the opportunity to split it up. (Back in the day, I stumbled across JM on 91.1 and was stunned that Xtians aren't the only ones who make heinous pop music. It's a bit better now.) (I wonder if Muslims & Hindus also have execrable religious pop.)
  Wed. 3/9/11 4:01pm brycepunk:

Thank you :)
  Wed. 3/9/11 4:01pm ginger tim:

JM in the AM's music is odd as there never are any female voices. There could never be a Gender Bias portion of JM in the AM.
Wed. 3/9/11 4:03pm chris in madison:

JOKERMAN
Wed. 3/9/11 4:03pm chris in madison:

PAPYRUS
  Wed. 3/9/11 4:05pm eyenoise:

It takes great skill to use Brush Script. It is misused and abused. More typography talk, please!
  Wed. 3/9/11 4:06pm FCC:

Trent, Pledge Ho
  Wed. 3/9/11 4:07pm Radioman:

Comic Sans MS is awful. Vollkorn (http://friedrichalthausen.de/?page_id=411) and Georgia are great.
Nice article: http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2010/12/17/25-new-free-high-quality-fonts-typography/
Wed. 3/9/11 4:10pm chris in madison:

Comic Sans inspired one of the greatest (of MANY) Achewood strips:

Wed. 3/9/11 4:10pm Matt from Springfield:

Misfits and Malcontents!
There is no "end" to the "charts"! Take it off center as far as you can! I permit you to use my donations to launch your shows even further away from my own norms!
  Wed. 3/9/11 4:12pm Radioman:

Radio has to be more indie, more intersting, more varied, more individual (like WFMU). (I think you cannot express it well, but you can feel it.)
Wed. 3/9/11 4:13pm Matt from Springfield:

Who's the composer of the "Money" song?
  Wed. 3/9/11 4:13pm tomasz.:

i prefer Comic Sans to passion for fonts.
  Wed. 3/9/11 4:13pm Radio Consultant:

Radio Templates: the fastfood-ization of music delivery.

Don't forget your :23 and :53 breaks, your end-hour power track, and your recent recurrents slotted in per the preprinted schedule by a computer.

Actually, you can't forget them. The software does everything at just the right time. Then you the DJ read the prewritten mic break wording off your laptop.

Easy as pie, and all focused-grouped to within an inch of its life.
  Wed. 3/9/11 4:14pm v:

That Mel Blanc ditty was amazing.
  Wed. 3/9/11 4:15pm Walter Lantz:

I'm underrated.
  Wed. 3/9/11 4:15pm pete:

uh oh here comes more amanda
  Wed. 3/9/11 4:16pm dave:

I think "money" is a stan freberg/ruby raskin song, but I'm not sure.
  Wed. 3/9/11 4:16pm Radioman:

Nice statement, Radio Consultant!
  Wed. 3/9/11 4:17pm Drake-Chenault:

In the next half-hour, you'll hear Linda Ronstadt.
Wed. 3/9/11 4:17pm Brian in Madison, WI:

Amanda, I hang on your every word....
  Wed. 3/9/11 4:18pm Sir Henry:

I know what I want and I want it now. Your pledges. Sir you had the gall to play my record last year, you scoundrel. Now your listeners have to pay for the privilege of anticipating a repeat of the same. Forget the the archives that your technical johnnies have created, hearing it for the first time is the only way forward you know that and so do your listeners. So pay up and accept your fate.
Wed. 3/9/11 4:18pm Matt from Springfield:

Thanks dave, it would make sense to be a Stan Freberg tune.
  Wed. 3/9/11 4:18pm βrian:

Gallows humor, there.
  Wed. 3/9/11 4:22pm dave:

If you slowed down Amanda just a tiny bit, it'd sound like 98% of the doom metal out there.
  Wed. 3/9/11 4:23pm AnAnonymousParty:

Looks like no candy or gum for me, but at least I live in a beautifully named town (sniff).
  Wed. 3/9/11 4:23pm G:

Pledged last week, as also in prior years. Any losers here who have not pledged, get it together already.

FWIW, comments don't have a spellcheck feature.
  Wed. 3/9/11 4:24pm Ike:

HOORAY for fixing comment typos! I would do that too.
Wed. 3/9/11 4:24pm Matt from Springfield:

Amanda C&S!!!!! Mashups!!!!! Get GHP on this!
Amanda DUBBBBBBBS MON!!!!!!!
Wed. 3/9/11 4:24pm Brian in Madison, WI:

Fix whut tipos?
  Wed. 3/9/11 4:25pm Robert:

@ MN Jeff: Originally the "JM" stood for "Jewish Music", but then they broadened the concept so it now stands for "Jewish Moments". For at least a couple of years it was the more musical part of a block, the final hour of which held the real heavy religious-scholar stuff, Radio Kol Torah (Radio Voice of Law-Scroll), but now that content is sort of scattered within. I'm not sure what the original title of the program was, "JM in the AM" being more of a slogan than the official title at least at first; apparently Nachum was too modest to have his name be part of the official program name.
  Wed. 3/9/11 4:25pm ginger tim:

Can someone use paulstrech on Amanda?
http://hypermammut.sourceforge.net/paulstretch/
  Wed. 3/9/11 4:25pm G:

Typical graphic errors.
  Wed. 3/9/11 4:25pm G:

I've seen him do it (fix typos)
  Wed. 3/9/11 4:25pm DJKurtG:

Erwin's show is the greatest thing on WMUF! donate now!
Wed. 3/9/11 4:25pm Matt from Springfield:

@G: I'm a loser, but I HAVE pledged a few times this marathon...I guess as long as you pledge, you're LESS of a loser!
  Wed. 3/9/11 4:26pm AnAnonymousParty:

  Wed. 3/9/11 4:26pm John Lennon:

I'm a loser, and I lost someone who's dear to me,
I'm a loser, and I'm not what I appear to be.
  Wed. 3/9/11 4:27pm rrg:

If I had control of a playlist, I'd fix other people's typos too.
  Wed. 3/9/11 4:27pm G:

In fact, I forgot but I own this comments board for a year. O:-) PROOFREAD, YOU PEOPLES.
Wed. 3/9/11 4:27pm Matt from Springfield:

WFMU Playlists--giving listeners a place of immortality,
Whether they WANT it or NOT!! Your comments are trapped here forever!!! Mwahaahahaha!
  Wed. 3/9/11 4:28pm DJKurtG:

Erwin's manhood is unfinished?
Wed. 3/9/11 4:28pm Brian in UK:

Total carp. There is a fishing magazine in the UK with this name, really. Irwin you can change the typo if it makes you feel good/bad.
  Wed. 3/9/11 4:28pm ginger tim:

How 'bout "The Prize Plinth"?
  Wed. 3/9/11 4:29pm Urologist:

Irwin's manhood is dribbling. Can you help start a drip, nurse?
  Wed. 3/9/11 4:29pm SF:

That seems like the kind of humor fishing enthusiasts would enjoy.
Wed. 3/9/11 4:30pm Matt from Springfield:

I would be obsessed with correcting spelling and typo errors if I admin-ed a board. Self-created work.

And Irwin, I'm turning 26 next month, so there's one less 25 year old "salivating to grab [your] slot when [you] earn a toe tag"
  Wed. 3/9/11 4:31pm DJKurtG:

Erwin, I CHOOSED you!

get it?
Wed. 3/9/11 4:32pm Matt from Springfield:

Or, to clarify, Irwin was CHOOSÉD by KurtG.
  Wed. 3/9/11 4:32pm dc pat:

Well I think your all crazy, its not right to correct typo's.
  Wed. 3/9/11 4:32pm noah:

Man, this is rockin'!
  Wed. 3/9/11 4:34pm rrg:

I fix other people's typos when replying to their mail (I guess you kids call it "e-mail") so I would certainly do it on a message board as well.
  Wed. 3/9/11 4:34pm ?:

this is kind of Axelrodian and Walkerite
  Wed. 3/9/11 4:36pm Colleagues:

Irwin's got it made in the shade. The pledging heat's totally off.
  Wed. 3/9/11 4:36pm How to Be a Free-Form DJ:

1) rock out; 2) wuss out; 3) jazz out; 4) spazz out.
Repeat.
Wed. 3/9/11 4:37pm Want to change it?:

Fixing typos is a bit like autotune.
  Wed. 3/9/11 4:37pm Colleagues:

Did Stephin Merritt pledge? He should.
  Wed. 3/9/11 4:38pm Neglect Barrier:

Man, I'm like the Berlin friggin' Wall! I ain't fallin' down until EVERYONE tears me down at once!
  Wed. 3/9/11 4:38pm Ike:

@DC Punk, GO TO HELL with Andy B., you apostrophe rapist!

I'm only a grammatical fascist. In other ways, I support basic human rights, I swear. No need to investigate me, Dave Emory.
  Wed. 3/9/11 4:40pm dc pat:

no better way to get under the skin of a typo-fixer than misplaced apostrophe's...
  Wed. 3/9/11 4:41pm Dave Emory:

Show 666, originally broadcast September 3rd, 2005. Ike is a worldwide leader of punctuation fascism and grammatical torture.
Wed. 3/9/11 4:42pm Dead Corporate Eyes:

@rrg--do you italicize and boldface their mistakes? how else can they learn from them?
  Wed. 3/9/11 4:43pm βrian:

It's not fascism. It's transparency. If you want to be ambiguous, that's ok, too.
  Wed. 3/9/11 4:43pm dc pat:

great point DCE, it's like punishing a kid but not telling him/her why.
  Wed. 3/9/11 4:43pm rrg:

I fix their mistakes quietly. I don't do it for them, I do it for ME.
Wed. 3/9/11 4:43pm Brian in UK:

Hey play something from The Sixths album. You don't have to hear SM's dull baritone.
Wed. 3/9/11 4:44pm Dead Corporate Eyes:

naw, let 'em have it!
  Wed. 3/9/11 4:45pm Ike:

Sigh. Yeah DC Punk, I rise to the bait like a big dummy. Just like when SOMEONE puts dopey pro-Reagan crud in his playlist.
  Wed. 3/9/11 4:45pm Reno Dakota:

"take Trent and I out of our misery"? Would you say "take I out of my misery"? Irwin's verbal typo must not go unreprAmanda'ed
  Wed. 3/9/11 4:45pm Listener:

@Brian: Listen for the lyrics, not for the American Idol wow factor in the singing. But "San Diego Zoo" is a nice track.
  Wed. 3/9/11 4:46pm mispelt:

Who fixes the grammar in the audio archive?
  Wed. 3/9/11 4:49pm G:

Jeff Sarge and Tom S. drop-ins, kewl.
Wed. 3/9/11 4:49pm Dead Corporate Eyes:

this poor man
  Wed. 3/9/11 4:50pm Mike East:

I think Jeff Sarge got my first ever FMU pledge several years ago. God I love this station. So many choices!
  Wed. 3/9/11 4:51pm (¸.•[]`•.¸.•´¯`•:

I'd like Sarge's voice bettr if it weren't always accompanied by hideously overprduced top-40 reggae from hell.
  Wed. 3/9/11 4:51pm T. Quirk:

I can't believe how Andy Breckman talks smack about Irwin's playlist.. this is the best mix I've heard in a long damn time. Keeping me going on another grey Chicago day.
  Wed. 3/9/11 4:52pm Mike East:

different strokes fer different folks...
  Wed. 3/9/11 4:53pm Gary Coleman:

True, dat.
  Wed. 3/9/11 4:53pm Sly:

Word.
Wed. 3/9/11 4:54pm Matt from Springfield:

LOL--"listen to our program. Do you THINK we throw anything away"!!
  Wed. 3/9/11 4:54pm G:

The whole station is hoarders, just specialized in music-related stuff.
  Wed. 3/9/11 4:56pm wha?:

WFMU: flea market, or flea circus?
  Wed. 3/9/11 4:56pm Orson Welles:

The crisp, crumb coating....I'm not reading this copy! It's a crock of shit!!
  Wed. 3/9/11 4:56pm Julian:

Greetings from Footstool, The Republic of Pinkingshear. I'm sorry to say I shot my wad in all of the excitement last night, helping to bring in $95,000. Anyway, my heart is with you. Plus I can listen to your show anytime thanks to the tapes I have from the early '80's.
  Wed. 3/9/11 4:56pm Robert:

Why did you think Ms. Cantrell's show was the Radio Thrift Shop?
  Wed. 3/9/11 4:58pm Geographically Challenged:

WFMU--the best radio station west of the equator!
  Wed. 3/9/11 4:59pm minnesota jeff:

Julian - You should get those digitized and submit them to WFMU so they could maybe added to the archive! I would love to hear those!
  Wed. 3/9/11 4:59pm Ilya:

For all of you Twin Cities listeners, sign up on FB at: WFMU Twin Cities LIsteners Club.
  Wed. 3/9/11 4:59pm Ike:

Julian, you mean '80s. :) And I'd volunteer to digitize those!
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:00pm Troublemaker:

Some lurking high roller should pledge $5000 or more, and set up an Irwin vs. Tom S. "freeform foundraising king" smacktalking throwdown.
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:01pm ?:

Snarky, snarky!
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:02pm JCJ:

Yes! Someone on WFMU finally said 'dot-org' instead of 'dot-O-R-G'. As in Internet old-timer, the latter always makes me cringe. It's like saying 'dot-C-O-M'.
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:02pm Gary Bettman:

I'll donate ten grand right now if anybody will get me out of this mess in Phoenix.
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:03pm Julian:

@Ike and MN jeff:

Yep, it's on my large to-do list to digitize those tapes; just have to change some audio cords. I do believe I meant '80's, instead of, 1980's, but then, I'm not a professional grammaticaltitian.
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:03pm AnAnonymousParty:

I'm rich? Don't tell my kids.
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:03pm @JCJ:

So, we're supposed to say "dot sizz" for Czech sites?
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:04pm &:

Gvie WFMU your kids!
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:04pm rrg:

Show tunes!
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:04pm @JCJ:

...and "dot ka" for Canadian sites? Unacceptable.
Wed. 3/9/11 5:04pm Matt from Springfield:

@Julian: I believe it was the 2nd apostrophe; '80s, not '80's. The tapes are from the '80s--the '80s don't own the tapes (or DO they...)
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:04pm Julian:

Yes, I do believe it was "Uncle Irwin" or "Your old pal Irwin" back in those days.
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:05pm Troublemaker:

@AnAnonymousParty: Yes, pledge to FMU and then you can tell your kids you are tapped out without the slightest twinge of guilt.
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:05pm Ike:

1980s or '80s. Uh oh, I fell for the bait again.
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:06pm AnAnonymousParty:

$75 dollar pledge = 1 tank of gas. Where am I gonna go anyway when I can just stay home and listen to the show?
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:06pm @JCJ:

Internet old-timer? More like internet curmudgeon.
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:06pm Julian:

If I pledge more I may have to explain to my sister where the money is coming from. That would be hard since I got busted two years ago.
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:06pm Troublemaker:

Irwin invented ARPANET
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:07pm Jim:

I recommend the 1946 Ethel Merman/Ray Middleton original Broadway cast version of "Anything You Can Do."
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:08pm rrg:

I like that too. But Betty Hutton's is pretty good, I must say.
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:08pm AnAnonymousParty:

Can we get Ella Fitzgerald & Louie Armstrong singing "Let's Call the Whole Thing Off"?
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:08pm Bobbling Parrot:

Amanda's version is much cooler than George's.
Wed. 3/9/11 5:09pm Matt from Springfield:

Love the ensemble with the late George! Was this a cassette audio only, or did Jody make a video of this as well?
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:09pm dirk:

(volume button being pushed way way down)
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:09pm Julian:

@Ike et al: I think youse guys is right. that ' makes it too possessive (as I clutch those tapes close to my chest).
Wed. 3/9/11 5:10pm Matt from Springfield:

(remotely pushing dirk's volume button way way up using magic Amanda listener powers)
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:10pm Happy Pledger:

(volume being turned up, and banging the wall to the beat for the neighbours)
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:10pm rrg:

I remember the George Harrison video. With the squirrel playing the sax. Dumb, but memorable.
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:11pm rrg:

Check with Irwin first (re old show tapes).
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:12pm George H.:

It sold units.
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:12pm Happy Pledger:

I thought Ringo was the "dumb but memorable" one. I'm trying to sing "Two of the Beatles Have Died" to this tune now.
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:12pm AnAnonymousParty:

Too bad Ethel Merman is gone, y'all could have got her for the Amanda tribute band.
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:12pm Adolf Sax:

The saxophone was named after me, its inventor.
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:13pm Happy Pledger:

Is Eugene Merman related?
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:14pm Adolphe Sax:

Is that bait?
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:15pm Haley Barbour:

Mitt Romney is a Merman.
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:15pm Happy Pledger:

It's a request for information. Information. Information.
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:15pm rrg:

You won't get it!
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:15pm Thomas:

Yeah, my singing draws money like flies to vinegar, I mean honey.
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:16pm Happy Pledger:

"Bait"!?! You kids are so jaded.
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:17pm Bearded One:

I disagree strongly with your amanda songs, but I will donate to the death your right to play it.
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:18pm rrg:

Used to be called "the cassette underground"
Wed. 3/9/11 5:18pm Matt from Springfield:

Thomas Sings = Speechless Smile :)
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:18pm Happy Pledger:

Begorrah! That's some strong Happy Listener Repellent you're playing there!
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:19pm Or:

Tape trading
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:20pm rrg:

Remember Casey Kasem and "another goddamned death dedication"?
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:20pm Julian:

@MN Jeff: Weren't you able to click join on the FB group?
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:20pm Ryan Seacrest:

Yeah, wait till my outtakes get around.
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:20pm Paul Anka:

The guys get shirts!
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:20pm Marcel:

You've just made my day!! thanks
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:21pm Happy Pledger:

@rrg: I'm having a profanity-infused tirade right now!
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:21pm JCJ:

As I said, "old-timer." Didn't have to worry about any of those, it was .com, .org, .edu, or .gov, and there was an appropriate way to say each of them. Then all you kids came along with your newfangled "web sites" and muddled everything up.
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:22pm Happy Pledger:

He has a bloody horrible voice, Irwin! He's barely even committed to the lyrics he's delivering. Aaaaarrrrghhh!
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:23pm Ryan Seacrest:

Irwin's been listening to weirdass singing for so many decades now that he has long since totally lost sight of the bad-okay boundary.
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:23pm mike noble 7sd:

someone tell irwin he should check out current soca artist FABULOUS SKINNY
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:23pm rrg:

Look who's talking, Mr. Ryan Seacrest.
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:23pm Happy Pledger:

I can't believe that I'd agree with anything Ryan Seacrest says.
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:24pm PMD:

Huh, I didn't realize what I was in the running for. Oh dear. Maybe I'll do a cover of Thomas doing a cover.
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:24pm mike noble 7sd:

specifically skinny's soca monarch 2011 entry CHARGE UP
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:25pm Marmalade kitty:

was Thomas recorded secretly? maybe he would die of horror if he were ever to hear himself on tape!
That would be me!
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:25pm jonny d.:

got any Flying Listravians?
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:25pm minnesota jeff:

Julian - I joined, yes. But the administrator of the group has to accept you. So you click join and the request gets sent to them via Facebooks messaging system.
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:26pm JCJ:

He has what's likely a good SPEAKING voice. Singing, though, he's tone-deaf and has not just "no commitment to the lyrics", but also no commitment to any particular key.
Wed. 3/9/11 5:26pm Matt from Springfield:

So THIS is soca--I was wondering what made it different from other Caribbean music. I must say, it's quite fun!
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:27pm Happy Pledger:

I never imagined that soca could sound so good. You should always tenderise your audience with a little Thomas before future soca sets.
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:27pm Ryan Seacrest:

There's so much "okay" singing out there (I should know). Irwin obviously got bored with that and decided long ago that he could learn much more about human singing from "WTF type singing". We specialize in that during auditions only.
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:29pm minnesota jeff:

Ryan, did you murder that co-host guy that vanished after season 1?
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:30pm Ryan Seacrest:

Contact my legal representatives on that.
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:30pm Roberto:

JCJ, I've been wanting to explain the .o-r-g concept to so many FMU DJs for years now. Plus it's three syllables where one will do. We must work together to conserve our precious syllables!
Wed. 3/9/11 5:31pm Matt from Springfield:

Thomas Rewrites Measure, Tone, Meter and Scale.
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:31pm mike noble 7sd:

@matt Soca formed when calypsonians started adding chutney beats to their songs. in recent years the chutney beat has been replaced with jamaican ragga to make the very fast paced, very electronic genre of ragga soca.
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:32pm Marmalade kitty:

..he sounds like he's on the toilet!
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:33pm rrg:

This is making me hungry
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:33pm tomasz.:

i like Thomas cuz of his utter disrespect for The Beatles' oeuvre. cool name too
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:33pm rrg:

Strike that
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:33pm Marmalade kitty:

sun studios had a good toilet..
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:34pm minnesota jeff:

He's on the toilet alright ... the toilet of our hearts!
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:35pm PMD:

Fresca was not diet! Really? I used to drink that.
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:35pm rrg:

When did Thomas record these? Do we know?
Wed. 3/9/11 5:36pm Matt from Springfield:

@mike: Wow! Chutney is the music of Indian Trinidadians, and that certain "je ne sais quoi" that makes it such a party beat is Indian, much like trancy or beat Indian songs!
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:36pm JCJ:

@Jeff: So what you're saying is, he's crapping on our hearts.
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:37pm jill o.:

Got any Floyd?
Wed. 3/9/11 5:37pm Matt from Springfield:

@mike: That actually helped explain the essence of a type of music--Thanks!
@Irwin: I was thinking Thomas' beverage of choice would be grape soda. Though diet grape soda also seems likely.
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:37pm minnesota jeff:

@JCJ Or at the very least holding his bare bottom and genitals very close to it.
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:38pm Antoine Catelan:

Hi from athens!Nice playlist.!
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:40pm JCJ:

@PMD, Fresca was diet; sweetened with aspartame. It just tasted much better than most other diet sodas so you probably didn't notice.
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:40pm PMD:

Irwin, I think it's more of putting Trent out of his misery. You're enjoying this.
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:40pm rrg:

Tab was (almost) the first diet soft-drink. I think (maybe) Diet-Rite preceded it. Fresca I'm not sure about. A 1960s contemporary, for sure. Grapefruit flavored.

But I should never make such assertions without researching it first. And I haven't.
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:41pm Ryan Seacrest:

@all the toilet comments above: Thomas's oeuvre is ALL dump button.
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:41pm DJKurtG:

Yo, Erwin, Terry Tee has a Tote!
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:41pm PMD:

@JCJ - weird, I didn't think aspartame existed then!
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:42pm Ryan Seacrest:

Poor Trent.
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:42pm Nutella stoat:

@rrg and anyone who cares: I always loved Tab's original logo, great typography. Diet Rite had an eyecatching logo as well, with the 2 sets of letters lined up in 2 different styles.
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:42pm Ryan Seacrest:

maybe it was cyclamate.
Wed. 3/9/11 5:43pm Matt from Springfield:

@rrg: Diet Rite WAS the first diet cola (1962), you are correct. Coca Cola released Tab in 1963; Pepsi then came out with one, maybe not Diet Pepsi--but I myself, will have to research that first.
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:43pm Carmichael:

Hey Dogs, you're at 3 quarters of a million skimolies!! Almost there!!
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:43pm DJKurtG:

Poor Trent
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:43pm dave:

Thomas is the only musician even IRWIN will fast-forward through.
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:44pm rrg:

According to good old Wikipedia: Fresca was introduced in 1966, originally sweetened with cyclamates, then saccharin, then aspartame.

That fits with what I remember.
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:44pm JCJ:

Hmm.... I wonder if maybe it was originally cyclamate.
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:45pm Ryan Seacrest:

Our friend Thomas seriously needs some fake sweetener.
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:46pm JCJ:

Yeah, I'd forgotten all amount cyclamate as the first artificial sweetener. And first to start killing people.
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:46pm Nutella stoat:

I grew up a little freaked out by Sweet n' Low when it was the saccharine 70s. All my diet-crazed relatives were using it when it clearly said it gave rats cancer. This troubled this early-reader toddler to no end.
Wed. 3/9/11 5:46pm Matt from Springfield:

Pepsi's response WAS Diet Pepsi (1964); for some reason I thought they tried something else first.
@JCJ,rrg: Cyclamate was withdrawn by the FDA in 1969, forcing them to re-formulate using saccharin.
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:47pm Cyclamate:

They still use me in Europe, Canad, and Asia. They know human beings are not lab rats
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:48pm Carmichael:

Now LOTS of things kill people!
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:48pm JCJ:

Not all of us are, anyway.
Wed. 3/9/11 5:48pm Patrick and Eugene:

P.E. sounds familiar. Only he's in fewer TV commercials than we are.
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:48pm rrg:

We're still expecting/hoping to hear the Professor live on Irwin's show sometime in May.
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:49pm Carmichael:

Thsi sounds like Flight of the Conchords
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:49pm PMD:

I love Professor Elemental.
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:49pm MrFab:

Hey, I have a King Short Shirt album! He's from one of the 'other' islands, not Jamaica, or Trinidad. Antigua, I think. I never heard the chutney explanation of the origins of soca. Indian-influenced chutney is a seperate style. Soca comes from 'soul-calypso' - influenced by American funk and r'n'b.
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:50pm Nutella stoat:

I held my tongue earlier, but I agree with MrFab.
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:51pm rrg:

I remember Johnny Carson grousing about "Canadian rats" back when saccharin was withdrawn here.

And that SNL parody song. Gilda Radner, I think.
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:51pm JCJ:

Did the professor just say something about "tiger juice"? And if so, was that the predecessor to Sheen's "tiger blood"?
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:51pm Carmichael:

Have any of you scrubs donated any "opinion money" to this fine station? Well, have ya??
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:53pm Amos Kellogg:

Puffa Puffa Rice!
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:53pm Nutella stoat:

@rrg: 1977, but I don't recall the SNL parody. Time for a YouTube hunt.
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:53pm rrg:

The WFMU comments board is very much like a Canadian contest drawing. You have to answer a "skill-testing question" first in order for it to be legal. Sheer luck of the draw alone won't fly.
Wed. 3/9/11 5:55pm Matt from Springfield:

Mailed in a Mouse Pledge before the marathon for that extra motivation, and pledged during YLT (enjoy that "Happy Jack" -- though my first choice was The Church, and I did hear them trying to rehearse it! I guess they were more comfortable with "Happy Jack").
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:55pm mike noble 7sd:

@MrFab... i've definitely heard that "soul calypso" explanation before.
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:57pm rrg:

@Nutella stoat: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mvObT3EFNUY
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:57pm Carmichael:

The SNL parody was a song called Sacharrin [sp]. It was a girl group doo-wop featuring Gilda Radner, Jane Curtin and Linda Ronstadt. They were introduced by Paul Schaffer as Don Kirshner, who called them "a driving force in the rock scene."

And I submitted a 365 Mouse pledge.
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:58pm mike noble 7sd:

@MrFab but the chutney influence (even though it was and remains a separate genre) is not to be denied. i think the original soca-man lord short/ras shorty i was big on the calypso-chutney hybrid
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:58pm Nutella stoat:

@rrg: awesome, thanks!@
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:59pm fwiw:

Wikipedia includes the chutney influence.
  Wed. 3/9/11 5:59pm minnesota jeff:

"I can go home and drink a lot of rum now." - Irwin
  Wed. 3/9/11 6:00pm JCJ:

@rrg, not sure I remember Carson doing it, but "cancer in Canadian rats" was a common punch line for a while.
Wed. 3/9/11 6:00pm Matt from Springfield:

Bravo, Carmichael!
  Wed. 3/9/11 6:00pm Robert:

The original saccharine-sweetened sodas AFAIK were not the major brands but more narrowly-distributed ones like No-Cal and Lo-Cal. No-Cal ISTR as White Rock's trademark..
  Wed. 3/9/11 6:01pm rrg:

I'll bet Carson was first with the line.
Wed. 3/9/11 6:01pm Matt from Springfield:

@jeff: Truly worthy of an immortal place in Bartlett's Quotations.
