Listener comments!

  3:03pm
serge:

bonjour Irwin !
  3:03pm
Jack:

Great picture, Irwin!
  3:04pm
PMD:

Oh how I love that little kitty.
  3:05pm
Pedant:

Avoid overuse of the passive voice.

Overuse is to be avoided of the passive voice.
  3:07pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

greetings are given to Irwin and to all the playlist commentators by me.
  3:08pm
Looms:

Aaaah don't tell me that the sun is shining on Jersey City because i'm gonna hate you guys!
ps: bonjour aussi.
  3:09pm
Pompous Pontificant:

Never use the command tense!
  3:09pm
Matt from Springfield:

@DCE: Greetings returned to you, Irwin and to all the playlist commentators, excluding myself.
  3:10pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

this is most gracious. is it odd to greet oneself?
  3:11pm
Matt from Springfield:

Passive Imperative:
"Passive voice be avoided!"
  3:11pm
LOL Cat:

LOL!
  3:12pm
Matt from Springfield:

Matt is from Springfield. He is of the opinion that, should a person refer to oneself in the third person, it would then be acceptable to greet oneself.

Greetings to you, Matt from Springfield.
  3:14pm
Pedant:

Let it never be said that a single opportunity for the passive voice to be used was ever missed by me.
  3:15pm
BSI:

make with that load of crap!
  3:16pm
Matt from Springfield:

YESSS! POWER CHILD!
Me swinging in Cookieland! Which makes good sense to me!
  3:17pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

I think the Beatles originally did this and sang "POWER CHILD" where Sir George later dubbed in "HONEY PIE"
  3:18pm
Musicologist:

Is Amanda a mod or a rocker?
  3:18pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

BSI, I'll have sugar and cream instead
  3:18pm
Matt from Springfield:

Irwin: like I said after last week's show, the programming last week was so great, I actually didn't mind that there wasn't any Amanda. That COULD have been the week; BUT I noticed you didn't end with Dr. Dobrovolski's "Batcholo Mang" as usual, so legally this week is STILL part of last week's episode!!! The streak continues!!!!!
  3:20pm
Dale from North Dakota:

Amanda is... a mocker.
  3:21pm
Amandologist:

@Musicologist: Both, and neither. She moved the spectrum so far beyond those limited views, that nowadays that's kind of like asking whether you're a hunter-gatherer or farmer.
  3:21pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

I've never actually heard the end of Irwin's show, so I assume it's all one long thing, mang.
  3:21pm
Musicologist:

You better footnote the movie when you say that. podner.
  3:22pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

how many hundreds of feet of snow do you have up there, Dale?
  3:22pm
Robert:

Aw, fuckless, mouthless, noseless kitty cat. The lack of features just perfectly captures the carefree, fuckfree-ness.
  3:23pm
Cheri Pi:

Fearghal!
  3:24pm
Dale from North Dakota:

The snow has mostly melted, actually. Contrary to popular belief, North Dakota doesn't get all that much snow -- here it averages about 24" a year.
  3:24pm
BSI:

even without a mouth, fuckers make me sneeze.
carefree sneezy floating fuckers.
  3:24pm
Cute little p---y:

I don't give fucks. I take them.
  3:24pm
Popular belief:

my bad!
  3:25pm
Matt from Springfield:

Love this "Bay Area Funk" album! Is it still in print?

@DCE: What? You've never checked the Archives to catch the parts you miss? I probably don't follow as many shows as you, so I usually fill myself in when not listening live.
  3:25pm
dude:

cute little p----y, what's your number?
  3:26pm
Cute little p---y:

check the wall in any dive bar bathroom.
  3:27pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

yeah, I've tried once in awhile and had no luck figuring it out. but mostly if I'm not tuned in here I'm tuned into something else. not enough hours in a week.
  3:28pm
BSI:

@DCE: ...and now with Tony Coulter's alt.stream, life got even more awesomely schizophrenic...
  3:28pm
PMD:

@BSI, lol! but they are so cute!
  3:29pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

damn, where is that?!?
  3:30pm
Robert:

The lyrics of this one just go with kitty cat.
  3:33pm
BSI:

DCE: it's an alt. live stream during Diane on Tuesdays, linked off the main wfmu.org page. ... or for now it's live every two weeks, & re-broadcast every other-other two weeks, if that makes sense. So having those two shows battling for my brain makes for a madhouse inside the skull.
  3:35pm
jazz fan:

I like that the artwork sun is all smiley and happy, just like Miles always was!
  3:36pm
Ike:

Tony C.'s show is great. It's on Doug Schulkind's stream, the "Give the Drummer Stream", linked on the FMU front page (left side). Or listen to Tony C.'s archives at: http://wfmu.org/playlists/TC
  3:36pm
miles concertgoer:

maybe he was happy. i couldn't tell because he kept his back to us all night.
  3:36pm
fanatic:

I've started hiring substitute listeners so I can keep abreast of the station programming at all times.
  3:38pm
politely:

Irwin, you typed Miles David.
  3:38pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

pay them union scale, don't hire no scabs
  3:40pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

plus you have to "date" the session to make us feel complete
  3:41pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

like that
  3:41pm
miles concertgoer:

Miles David? So he was Jewish, after all.
  3:42pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

he was Sammy David Jr's brother, right?
  3:45pm
NPR:

We are not really that evil. Just mediocre and toooootalllly predictable.
  3:45pm
burps:

Recently I found an old record from an 80's band called Bop Harvey. They had a trumpet player named Miles Davis. It took some effort to figure it out, but it is not the same person. Kinda funny.
  3:46pm
BSI:

@NPR, seriously? I've stared into the eyes of Garrison Keillor (sp?) and I found such nightmares therein...
  3:46pm
NPR:

O him, yes, I'd agree there. Sheesh!
  3:48pm
still b/p:

Weekend Edition Sunday host Liane Hansen would cook and eat your children at any opportunity.
  3:49pm
Matt from Springfield:

Amen! The rest of the AM and FM bands are an Evil Empire, and the dial cannot forever remain Half Evil, and Half Free. To arms, then! If only poor radio was wiped off--while we give the battle cry "NO MORE KUSFs!"
  3:50pm
Ike:

@BSI, agreed. <shallow>Keillor's ugliness = horrifying enough to rip a hole in the fabric of time and space if you look too long.</shallow> Never mind staring into the abyss, this is worse. I'd fear slowly BECOMING Garrison Keillor. He infects!! Soon we're all clones mumbling condescending smarminess about Lake Wobegon! AAIIEEEE!
  3:50pm
ginger tim:

How many WFMU staffers work at WNYC?? (Not to be confused with NPR)
  3:50pm
Matt from Springfield:

"STOP K-U-S-F-ing US UP!"
  3:51pm
Medevac:

Scary guy. Keillor's the Frankenstein's monster of NPR. Check his neck up close and you can see where they removed the plugs.
  3:52pm
tr|sh:

12? No, 8. 1.2?
  3:52pm
Mike East:

@ginger tim-There's atleast 2 that I know of...I would guess more. Radio's a small world (relatively speaking)
  3:52pm
Parq:

That was a nifty version of Close To You. There is also a wonderfully creepy minor-key version on the soundtrack to "Mirrormask". I confess, after decades of listening to NPR, I finally had to give up on it in 2008.
  3:53pm
Ike:

@GT, about 3.14159265.
Whenever I hear Rex's voice on WNYC, I can't help but think he's secretly mocking NPR, parodying everybody else over there, doing a funny voice. No?
  3:53pm
BSI:

@Ike: I was once asked why I seemed to HATE (HATE! HATE! HATE!) his Prairie Home Companion so much........ best answer I can think of is, it's just so fucking harmless..... The man could look like a demon & that would be fine, as long as there was more senseless violence in that show.
  3:54pm
B&B:

I dont like stuff that sucks!
  3:54pm
Matt from Springfield:

I actually support the local WETA because it's now almost entirely Classical, and I believe in some Classical presence on terrestrial radio. But I never listen to the "Talk" NPR--I can't stand them, and their voices make it worse! I agree with Ike about Rex!
  3:54pm
BSI:

it's that floating cat, has me saying 'fuck' too much now.
stupid fuckin' floaty cat.
  3:54pm
Irwin:

Hunch: Ike hates Keane. So does Jan.
  3:55pm
Mike East:

@Ike - did you hear that Benjamin Walker episode that Rex made a cameo on doing corporate underwriting spots for "Too Much Information (TMI)" - I was in stitches.
  3:56pm
Carmichael:

Son of a bitch, I missed Amanda. But I love Keane. And like BSI, I absolutely DESPISE Prairie Home Companion. Not sure why, other than Keillor is the planet's biggest pussy.
  3:56pm
Matt from Springfield:

@B&B: A good standard for any media!

I had to bring this up:
"Ike: Diane Rehm's voice would ream anybody('s ears). Sounds like a 137-year-old gargling glass shards."
  3:57pm
Ike:

@ME, no! I missed that episode of TMI somehow! I gotta find it now!

@Irwin, nah, Keane is mostly harmless. Kinda reminds me of Editors or White Lies.
  3:58pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Mike: Was it really Rex, or just an imitation as a joke? If it really was Rex, I would respect him for self-parody, kind of proving Ike's theory!
  3:58pm
tr|sh:

Could 'fuck' become 'fLuck' with an audio insertion and pass the language police?
In an effort to maintain integrity of the piece.. Some cuts are like amputations.
  3:58pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

ok, but This American Life and Studio 360 are the kittie's tits
  3:59pm
Mike East:

There's no mistaking that man's voice. He was born for radio.
  4:00pm
Robert:

Like the false pop attractions Communist gov'ts put up to deflect independent youth, Garrison Keillor was the Establishment-acceptable answer to Jean Shepherd.
  4:00pm
tr|sh:

Or 'Rrr'. Fruck.
I'll go answer myself and experiment with, uh, insertions. Audio insertions.
How about those language police?
  4:01pm
Matt from Springfield:

<<Calling DC area listeners>>
If it's voices we're talking about, who else CANNOT FUCKING STAND the all-news WTOP? Maybe it's their tones, maybe the endless transitions and bumpers, but listening to WTOP is like rubbing glass shards into my eardrums.
  4:01pm
Mike East:

not 100% sure, but I think its this episode: http://wfmu.org/playlists/shows/35562
  4:02pm
Matt from Springfield:

You out there DJ Julie?
Peter Schilling is on!
  4:02pm
Laura Lindgren:

Sehr schönes Lied, dieses Schilling. Danke, Irwin.
  4:02pm
WTOP:

We just haven't heard yet that the interwebs killed our programming niche about 15 years ago.
  4:02pm
dude:

tr l sh: if you need any help with those insertions, let me know, mkay?
  4:03pm
BSI:

Matt: re:WTOP, it's the oldtimer Maryland connection, I think.... that garden-advice guy is the complete and total distillation of all the MD drawl I grew up with. Lots of out-county MD drawlin' on that station.
  4:04pm
BSI:

oh, and I'm thinking of re-christening the studio "the glass-enclosed nerve center" ... (wtop ref.)
  4:04pm
shallow minnow:

Has Miles now converted?
  4:04pm
WOR:

re WTOP -- You mean someone else is doing outdated downmarket schlock programming?
  4:05pm
Matt from Springfield:

@tr|sh: At my university we had a one-hour weekly "humor" show I was involved in--it was once broadcast over the surrounding community's cable system, but by then was only on the campus closed-circuit cable movie channel. Yet we were STILL required to stick to FCC language!

At the end of my freshman year, they agreed to lift that requirement, but we were prepared to say "skeet" in place of "shit" if they didn't. After all, "skeet" is really a lot worse that shit, but it's allowed!
  4:06pm
Ike:

@Matt@3:54 -- wait, you don't hear Rex on WAMU, do you? I'm not talking about Rex on FMU, I mean he's ON THE NYC NPR STATION ALL THE TIME (not national NPR, just here I think), doing liners, in a mock-serious-sounding NPR announcer voice! And he's making fun of them and THEY CAN'T TELL! They think he's serious!!!! (Uh oh, I've blown his cover.) @WTOP: I find your constant news updates peculiarly soothing. Somehow nicer-sounding than WINS.
  4:07pm
tr|sh:

Maybe clipping out the 'ck' ? I recently heard the 'ithead' muted from 'shithead'. It was marginally better than plastic alternatives.
  4:08pm
ginger tim:

Why do you think Rex is "making fun of" rather than "making fun with"?
  4:09pm
"Fine line":

plus the fineline of guitarwork plagiarism.
  4:11pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Ike: I've heard Rex before on WNYC streams (or maybe MP3s) before. But I don't listen to WAMU--or unfortunately, TMI. Is Rex more of an FMU or WNYC personality?
  4:12pm
Robert:

Radio people have had all sorts of games going on since forever. The fad seems to have mostly passed, but there used to be a "thing" started by I don't know who (maybe Joe Templeton) for the ABC news announcers to say "I'm [Name]" at the top of the news each hour as fast and sneaky as they could.
  4:13pm
tr|sh:

@Matt f S
The radio station I worked at had its language police logic up-ended. Contextualizing was the requirement. If it weren't contextualized, we req'd warnings.
I was censored over old steve martin comedy one time - his sexualization of senior citizens. The horrors!
  4:13pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

radio people is weird folk
  4:13pm
BSI:

not as weird as cats.
  4:14pm
Matt from Springfield:

(hands Irwin a martini) Whew, tough job editing that!

But, if you started bleeping harmless words, could you play the "John Denver Radio Edit"? I think that would be appropriate!
  4:14pm
Robert:

I think it starts with hams and their Q codes.
  4:14pm
ABC news announcers:

Stalker avoidance system.
  4:17pm
Ike:

@Matt@4:11, ummm, FMU weekend personality, WNYC liner announcement-maker. @GT, good point. PLS NOTE, my interpretation of those WNYC liners may totally delusional.
  4:17pm
Robert:

As in, "What's the frequency, Kenneth?" Actually I think it might've started with their making fun of a hammy way one of them might've drawn it out.
  4:18pm
Inside baseball:

Good save, Ike. /sarcasm
  4:19pm
Matt from Springfield:

Whew! Any discussion of radio on the AccuPlaylist quickly turns into a hot topic, it seems!
@Ike: Thanks--I just noticed Rex is 1-3 Saturday.
  4:21pm
Hot Topic:

Your discussion about radio is now property of this retail chain. You can purchase it back for $39.99, or the commemorative box set for $119.99.
  4:22pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

in garishly hip colors and fabrics
  4:24pm
Surly Chubette:

What's so goddam funny about Hot fucking Topic?
  4:26pm
Mike East:

Fool's Paradise is one of my personal FMU favorites.
  4:27pm
Mike East:

Though I would say the same about a lot of shows...
  4:27pm
But:

why doesn't Rex drown doing his show from underwater like that for two hours at a time?
  4:28pm
R I S K Y !:

GO IN IRWIN!
  4:29pm
Robert:

Never mind that, how does Rex's stasis field not go past 1960?
  4:29pm
Lizardner Dave:

The thing is, we all already contribute to NPR if we pay taxes in this here USA. So fuck them and donate all your radio-supporting money to WFMU.
  4:31pm
BSI:

@Lizardner: yeh! I'll remember to grimace at their HQ next time I walk by.
Speaking of which, they're moving to a great big spangly new building sometime soon, which can't be a cheap manover, eh?
  4:33pm
Matt from Springfield:

Woooooo! Wooooooosssshieeeee!"
  4:33pm
Republican Congress:

Not for long, Liz. D.
  4:35pm
Parq:

Oh thank God, I had the flash player muted while that new kid was in my office. People think I'm weird enough around here without a new hire hearing Wooshie.
  4:37pm
New Kid:

I just got out of this weird guy's office...I felt he was hiding something from me...
  4:37pm
Carmichael:

Parq, my boss walked into my office once when Amanda was cranking out of my speakers. He just stared at my computer like a dog hearing an odd sound.
  4:38pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

likes this
  4:41pm
Parq:

New Kid, isn't Wooshie the *best*?
  4:41pm
Hulk Hogan:

Did you just say tag team, brutherrrrrrr????
  4:41pm
Mike East:

I got my pre marathon mailing...but it brought to mind something that I forgot about. I never got my Best Show premium from last year. Anyone know what the deal is?
  4:43pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Mike: Evidently the Best Show premium is a DVD SO great that they're still putting it together, and will probably send out the '11 one before the '10.
  4:43pm
Matt from Springfield:

Yes! Amanda prevails again!
@Irwin: Do you know who will be tag-teaming with you, or what other shows you will be on?
  4:43pm
Lizardner Dave:

MORE AMANDA!
Also, I'm guessing this year's Ken and SSD premiums are "you will actually get last year's premiums" since there are none listed. (Note that this is not whining, the great radio is enough but the premiums are so much fun).
  4:43pm
Amanda Premiums:

Those listeners are pussies, worhippp meeee!!!!
  4:44pm
Das:

I'd like a Thomas compilation.
  4:46pm
Irwin:

Did someone say "Thomas"?
  4:48pm
Das:

This is the best day ever!
  4:48pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Dave: I agree--I support FMU because it is so wonderful, but the premiums are so unique and fun, I even like trying to choose between so many great ones!

@Mike: Did you order the BS premium last March? Ha! I didn't order mine until the Lift-Off pledge, and you're STILL waiting! Hey, so am I!
  4:48pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Das: Yes! You can summon Thomas!
  4:49pm
BSI:

DIE! DIE! DIE!
a great improvement.
  4:49pm
Miles David:

Thomad!
  4:49pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Irwin: How many "tracks" of "Thomas Sings" are there?
  4:49pm
burps:

dig the Thomas
  4:52pm
Matt from Springfield:

Bill Murray's Groundskeeper from Caddyshack = Carl Spackler.
That's who Thomas reminds me of--still, it could be a "professional" name.
  4:53pm
Mike East:

Yeah, last March. I don't catch it every week anymore, but I got really into that show a few years ago. Pretty cool that Scharpling was on WTF this week. Felt like a score for the underdogs.
  4:53pm
Elvis:

Now there's a dude with authentic soul. Me and the Colonel was just heels.
  4:53pm
Matt from Springfield:

Any references on the tape to "varmits" would be a dead giveaway.
Is that reverb from the recording, or added just now?
  4:56pm
Das:

@ Matt = I picture a punch drunk George Foreman
  4:56pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Mike: Check out last night's Archive from right before the 2 hour mark--Tom does a FANTASTIC parody of typical podcasts!
  4:56pm
Elvis:

Don't be cruel, to an ear that's true
  4:58pm
Mike East:

Ha! I actually caught only that bit! I had just finished work and flipped on the radio for about ten minutes before I had to catch the bus. "so, we're podcastin' here"
  5:05pm
Vicki:

this is nice
  5:06pm
Angry Birds:

Peck this punk's eyes out, shall we?
  5:07pm
aaron in chicago:

cmon irwin round out the hour with angry birds. only 52 more minutes
  5:08pm
Vicki:

Yayyyy!
  5:08pm
Raymond Scott:

I coulda written this!
  5:08pm
Carmichael:

Sookie!
  5:08pm
Matt from Springfield:

LOL--Who did this mash up! Too funny!
  5:08pm
BSI:

oh hell, this is a riot.
  5:10pm
burps:

L7 rox
  5:11pm
Robert:

I thought this should've been the mood music on "Lost" back whe I thought the plot would make sense -- that the characters were pretending to be dead.
  5:18pm
7SD:

It's actually a dead show. Unusual, huh?
  5:19pm
Carmichael:

Oh Man .... what was Denise LaSalle's one big top 40 hit back in the 70s?? It's bugging me.
  5:21pm
Denise L.:

"Trapped By A Thing Called Love"
  5:22pm
wiki:

her first major success came in 1971 when her self-penned song, "Trapped By A Thing Called Love", released on Westbound Records, made #1 on the national R&B chart and #13 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart

@7SD: well as dead shows go, keep in mind we are a fast-zombie-supporting crowd.

  5:37pm

Since they started in like 1978 shouldn't they be Rabbitmen by now?
  5:38pm
Carmichael:

That's it. Thanks!
  5:38pm
BSI:

  5:48pm
Jeezy Creezy:

Can you please play some Jim Sullivan
  5:49pm
fleep:

He really put some soul into this one, the original was a little cheerful for the lyrics
  5:51pm
aaron in chicago:

Parq:

The Brit romcom "Love, Actually" is largely, well, a Brit romcom, but it has this one great scene with a new, more thoughtful, contralto version of "Both Sides" that Mitchell apparently cut recently.

ted:

God this is a beautiful song by Judee Sill
THanks for playing it!!
  5:53pm
Matt from Springfield:

@fleep: The original release by Judy? Or the "original" Joni release on the Clouds album? Judy Collins was a baroque pop single, but I thought Joni's solo guitar version was pretty soulful, very Joni. But I too, loved Dave's cover--very soulful and stark.

Matt from Springfield:

Judee Sill IS beautiful! This is the first I heard of her, and was saddened to learn she died over 30 years ago.
  5:55pm
Alex:

Always a pleasure to hear Judee Sill. Her solo version of this on Old Grey Whistle Test is amazing.
  5:58pm
Laura L:

Yay, Sport Murphy. Play something by Sport next week, why don't cha.
  5:59pm
Old Codger:

I'm dusting up my Marathon Megaphone, to tell you to "Give Me Money! Money! Money! Money! Money!"
  5:59pm
Robert:

Wny do they call it "salty" language? Is it just because that's how sailors talk? Couldn't it be "peppery"?
  5:59pm
PMD:

YOU edited it???
Oh, now I know why.
  6:00pm
Matt from Springfield:

@PMD: Ha ha!
Have a good night everyone!
