Options Brian Turner: Playlist from July 20, 2010 Options

Order and disorder in a freeform haze of terribly-played guitars, shorted-out electronics, found audio detritus, strange sounds from strange lands all around. Psych-punk-junk, collage, even pop. Lots of in-studio live performances to boot.

Unrest  Live in the WFMU Studios   Options Engineered by Jason Sigal and David Van Dokkum    Certainly one of the cornerstones of U.S. 90's indie rock, Washington DC's Unrest evolved from schizophrenic postpunk roots into finely crafted, texture-heavy, Brit-reverent, and even experimental pop music. Records like Malcolm X Park and Imperial FFRR earned them a heavy fan base and eventual gravitation onto 4AD records by 1993 after a huge discography of homegrown releases on leader Mark Robinson's Teenbeat record label. They disbanded in 1994, did one reunion show in 2005, and return with the lineup of Robinson, Bridget Cross, and Phil Krauth for a Teenbeat 26th Anniversary tour. Unrest makes a stop by Brian's show for what's sure to be a killer live set. Setlist: So So Sick / Make Out Club / UFO (ESG cover) / Isabel / June / West Coast Love Affair / I Do Believe You Are Blushing / Firecracker / Cherry Cherry. UPDATE: You can now download MP3s of this session via the Free Music Archive.    2:04:39 ()

Algebra Suicide - unusual name, unusual sound - I'm liking it.
  Tue. 7/20/10 3:10pm Steven Gugel:

Matt - this is beginning to sound like algbra. Who's on first?
Tue. 7/20/10 3:11pm Matt from Springfield:

Hey matt that whole comp is totally killer.
  Tue. 7/20/10 4:27pm Barry S.:

This like Crimson Jello Biafra! Yum!
  Tue. 7/20/10 4:29pm Joe:

@ Matt: Brian's right, these guys do generally great comps: http://www.d-i-r-t-y.com/compilations.html. And yes, I will play more sometimes ridiculous disco in the future!

  Tue. 7/20/10 4:50pm Charles @ Soleilmoon:

Nancella, it's funny if you haven't heard it before, but I've heard it so many times here the last few weeks that I'm sick of it.
  Tue. 7/20/10 4:52pm Nancella:

well, I don't listen to WFMU as much as you, Charles, but I hear you loud and clear.
  Tue. 7/20/10 4:52pm paul:

  Tue. 7/20/10 4:54pm BT:

I will play it for weeks to come!
  Tue. 7/20/10 4:54pm Charles @ Soleilmoon:

Just to beat this thing to death (and maybe stop it from being played so often), 16 playlists feature that song in recent weeks. http://bit.ly/d0MvwR
  Tue. 7/20/10 4:55pm Charles @ Soleilmoon:

Please don't throw me in the brian patch -- I mean BRIAR patch
  Tue. 7/20/10 4:55pm Bad Ronald:

  Tue. 7/20/10 4:57pm Hank:

  Tue. 7/20/10 4:58pm Nancella:

I must have this Drop Z song and play is 16 times in a row!
Tue. 7/20/10 4:58pm Chris from DC:

Dammit, now I won''t be able to get Drop Z out of my head.
  Tue. 7/20/10 4:59pm Charles @ Soleilmoon:

3puen, no intent to hurt any feelings, especially yours. However, I have opinions, and that's the way it is. If I hear the song too many times I can always play an archive of another show.
  Tue. 7/20/10 5:00pm 3puen:

we are honored to be over played... lol
  Tue. 7/20/10 5:00pm still b/p:

The recipe/relationship of protest to reinforcement not yet clear? Often the squeaky wheel gets the breeze, brother.
  Tue. 7/20/10 5:01pm Nancella:

BT, promote your own show...
  Tue. 7/20/10 5:01pm Nancella:

  Tue. 7/20/10 5:06pm BT:

  Tue. 7/20/10 5:08pm BT:

Jesus H
  Tue. 7/20/10 5:08pm Lou:

Hey! I didn't do anything. I was just telling you the correct day.
  Tue. 7/20/10 5:10pm Nancella:

oh, Lou: my mind always goes to the dark place, sorry.
  Tue. 7/20/10 5:11pm Nancella:

The Unrest recording is excellent. Nice work, BT

  Tue. 7/20/10 5:14pm don:

  Tue. 7/20/10 5:42pm Barry S.:

I'm tryin' to raise her right....
  Tue. 7/20/10 5:46pm J-Mar:

Saw Unrest play in DC a couple weeks back -- and got to see three different lineups of the band play in the same night. The first lineup (the original high school lineup) hadn't played together since 1986, and the second lineup (Malcolm X Park/KKB) hadn't played together since 1989. Then the Phil-Bridget-Mark lineup. As an unabashed Unrest geek, it was a momentous occasion for me. Versus were also totally awesome.
  Tue. 7/20/10 5:47pm sugar:

KISS!!! clearly the best song they have played yet
  Tue. 7/20/10 5:51pm J-Mar:

Tim Moran actually performed "Chastity Ballad" at the Unrest show in DC -- wasn't expecting them to pull that one out.
  Tue. 7/20/10 5:54pm Mike East:

Great show today! Thanks Brian!
  Tue. 7/20/10 5:55pm BT:

Thx Mike!
  Tue. 7/20/10 5:55pm mark m:

mr. mom? we will have words...
  Tue. 7/20/10 5:56pm paul b.:

They also do a cover of "Black Diamond" , There is an earlier mix of "Can't sit still" in existence too. I used to like that one better, Don't know if I still would. Mark was a big Can fan at one point. Thanks, Brian, for playing their version of the Cath Carroll song earlier I really liked that.
  Tue. 7/20/10 5:57pm J-Mar:

That earlier version of "Can't Sit Still" is on the Fuck Pussy Galore CD.
  Tue. 7/20/10 5:58pm Lou:

So good today! Great stuff even without the Mr. Mom soundtrack
  Tue. 7/20/10 5:59pm Barry S.:

My daughter is all tuckered out from rockin' out BT!!!!
Tue. 7/20/10 6:00pm Matt from Springfield:

A splendid time was had by all (mark m's gripe aside). See ya next week Brian!
