And gee, I WONDER what Stan could possibly be busy with all day tomorrow that he needs to take the night off for...
|
Tue. 4/20/10 2:16am
Bill Mac:
Joe! I'd hurry up and get the copyright on that. The guy that coined the phrase "Let's get ready to r-r-r-umble" doesn't have to work another honest day in this lifetime. Stan is a very busy stressed out and happily disturbed individual that probably needs a day at the beach to clear his head. I don't ask questions.... he's good though.

oh goodness . . . LOVE the Zola Jesus piece . . . and oh! what joy to hear Dana Gillespie again!!! and now "Alladdin Sane" . . . "passionate, bright young things" (i borrowed Evelyn Waugh's "Vile Bodies" from the library when i was a kid, just to see if i could find that phrase in the book!!!) . . . *sigh* . . . THANK YOU so much, Mr. Bill Mac, for helping to SOOTHE a VERY stressful night!!!

i do not know if "Weren't Born a Man" OR "Ain't Gonna Play No Second FIddle" were ever re-issued but i DO recall at the time the albums came out, there were all these *rumors* that Ms. Dana really WAS a man at one time . . . !

Bill Mac:
Thank You Slug! It's always a treat to find something that I remember peripherally from almost 40 years ago and get to try it out. I remember reading about Bowie and his asexual minions as a kid but never realized how much talent there was in some of them. Funny you mentioning getting Waugh's book out just to find Bowies inspiration for the album title. Mott the Hoople were named by the manger of the group at the time, based on a book going by the same name. Special times they were in music....

you are so welcome! do you recall how there was also the same sort of *controversy* surrounding Amanda Lear's gender? although if i remember correctly, the rumor was that Ms. Lear still WAS a man . . . !
|
Tue. 4/20/10 3:29am
Bill Mac:
Yeah! The fan rags of the day would put pictures of Lear next to pictures of Cherry Vanilla, confusing the be-jeebers out of pubescent readers like myself. She looked just like Angie Bowie!

ha ha! and omg CHERRY VANILLA!!!!!! i LOVED her holiday radio spot for a Bowie album (maybe "Aladdin Sane"?!?) . . . and the TV commercial she did with Bowie that would show up late at night . . . never scored her book of poetry though (wasn't that called "Vanilla Papers"?) -- read about that in "Rock Scene" magazine (*my* fave mag at the time!)
