Playlist for This Is the Modern World with Trouble - July 16, 2009

Thursdays 9am - Noon on WFMU 91.1 fm 90.1 fm wfmu.org

A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Loretta Lynn carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Thu. 7/16/09 10:43am From: north guinea hills

i actually have a USA soccer jersey..... it's still hard to chant "USA" at games...

(i also have many other jerseys as well)
soccer/football, my secret inner jock is out of the closet....

Thu. 7/16/09 10:43am From: just saying

soccer and nationalism go together like peas and carrots

Thu. 7/16/09 10:43am From: annie

when i was in 8th grade, we had a russian visitor for thanksgiving dinner. he gave me a pin with a picture of the first cosmonaut and i wore it with pride to school the next day. i was immediately labeled a communist!

Thu. 7/16/09 10:45am From: stingy d

it's cool guinea hills... i'm a basketball fanatic... more than you guys will ever know. i'm still smarter than a jughead.

Thu. 7/16/09 10:48am From: stingy d

what's up with these new wave of gladiator sandal joints the girls are wearing that are open heel and open toe but high on the ankle.... is it just me or do they look kinda like these people are wearing casts?

Thu. 7/16/09 10:49am From: north guinea hills

yep, soccer/football was my gateway sport.... now i'm full jock. i need help.

stingy, good to know i'm not the only one....

Thu. 7/16/09 10:50am From: Carmichael

I grew up playing football (soccer here) and still boot the ball around with the kids. I fell in love with the NFL as a teen after plopping down on the California coast. These are the only 2 sports that matter to me.

And unfortunately, soccer has led to not only nationalism but jingoisim and polemics.

Thu. 7/16/09 10:51am From: Jamesie

Uh I really enjoyed the show but I have to go now and pick up Effric on the motorcycle - she cant go home on the tube because she just had her eyes lasered. I will take sunglasses I have been advised. xx

Thu. 7/16/09 10:52am From: Carmichael

Stingy, are you talking about the Roman kind of sandal? That's what everyone wears out here. It's 104 today with about 15% humidity, so your feet will thank you.

Thu. 7/16/09 10:54am From: chris

Damn Lee P can still throw down yo!

Thu. 7/16/09 10:54am From: north guinea hills

my gf is mexican, and she hates soccer b/c of the jingoism of the mexican fans, and after watching a many mexico games, i can understand her point.

Thu. 7/16/09 10:55am From: ?

I was just thinking, literally, this morning, "what's up with all the Conan sandals these days?" that and black and white dresses

Thu. 7/16/09 10:58am From: stingy d

my feet ain't wearin no daggone ladies slippers my dude... much less any type of sandal. i'm holding fast with my white canvas boat shoe today. and those roman conan joints is called gladiators ya'll. just trying to help you get all your espadrilles in a row.

Thu. 7/16/09 11:42am From: trouble

it was the sensacional soul comp thing that did a version of higher...

Thu. 7/16/09 11:43am From: Kath

Yes, Trouble, I have found the confirmation hearings fascinating too, but you know students (of anything other than art, perhaps) still think there is such a thing as objectivity! Maybe showing them an excerpt of the hearings would serve to open their eyes and ears - thanks for the idea!
Didn't you love the question about how she could possibly emphathize with people from "small town" America, given that she is from NYC - as if it is another planet?! Modern world, indeed!

Thu. 7/16/09 11:43am From: Carmichael

Parq, are you sure it was this show? :-) That title isn't in the credits.

Thu. 7/16/09 11:44am From: listener mark
