Thu. 4/23/09 12:13pm From: Doug from DC

Transa and the white album are my two faves by Caetano. This is my favorite off of Transa.

Thu. 4/23/09 12:14pm From: Cecile

Hola, Bryce!
What is Friday's motif? I won't tell anyone...

Thu. 4/23/09 12:21pm From: stingy d

Thu. 4/23/09 12:23pm From: Cecile

Just as long as he doesn't punch you in the arm. That's the universal love code for dorky guys everywhere. Watch your upper arms, Stinge.

Thu. 4/23/09 12:23pm From: PMD

Thu. 4/23/09 12:36pm From: stingy d

so that means no... do i hear omar souleyman??

Thu. 4/23/09 12:36pm From: George Eliot

oops, forgot to read the fine print.

Thu. 4/23/09 12:39pm From: Prize Patrol

Congratualations, Stingy D. You just won a big cardboard check.

Thu. 4/23/09 12:40pm From: stingy d

aw man, i'm sick of winning them fuggin things

Thu. 4/23/09 12:44pm From: Ike

Omar Souleyman is amazing and has enough talent to cause the Steve Miller Cliché-Filled Band (who were NEVER good) to instantly vaporize like those folks in "The Day After" who were too close to the nuclear blasts.

Discuss: What others bands are often said to have once been good before a certain point, but actually always SUCKED giant donkey member? Another is Steely Dan. They always SUCKED.

Thu. 4/23/09 12:46pm From: Cecile

I'm not discussing anything of the sort.
I can like both Omar Souleyman and early SMB.

Thu. 4/23/09 12:46pm From: SCott

HI IKEEE~!!!!

Thu. 4/23/09 12:48pm From: Ike

Hello! Sorry, work is making me extra-cranky today.

I love me some Ferlin Husky.

Thu. 4/23/09 12:49pm From: Cecile

Yeah, that was a great track.

Thu. 4/23/09 12:50pm From: Sean Daily

Corn Weeny Sandwich?

Thu. 4/23/09 12:52pm From: Giant Donkey Member

more steely dan please

Thu. 4/23/09 12:55pm From: Steely Dan

We *were* a big donkey member. The name, dude.

Thu. 4/23/09 12:55pm From: Doug from DC

I thought Transa was recorded right after Caetano returned from exile, but I could be mistaken.

Thu. 4/23/09 1:02pm From: dc pat

sorry to say that I agree w/ Ike on Deely Stan

Thu. 4/23/09 1:02pm From: SCott

You may be right Doug, I totally welcome anyone to do the research and let us know! And while it don't get no dork-dadder than this, let it be known that my 3 1/2 yr old daughter's current fave song, which she sings all around the house, is "London London" -- what kid doesn't love singing about flying saucers, right?

Thu. 4/23/09 1:02pm From: Cecile

ahh, the new Bats album!

Pssst. someone should play Crooked Path. That's a great song.

Thu. 4/23/09 1:03pm From: stingy d

i like "peg" and i can't help it.

Thu. 4/23/09 1:04pm From: stingy d

speaking of kids... my 2 year old nephew started beatboixing

Thu. 4/23/09 1:05pm From: WR

Thanks Scott for playing Delgados!
Delgados need to be played every day.
Strangely enough, I like stripped-down haunted WFMU version better than the slightly overproduced Peel's one.

Thu. 4/23/09 1:05pm From: dc pat

I hepped my 3 year old son to the Clash's first album the other day and afterward, he was walking around the grocery singing "Ride, ride! I wanna ride!..."

Thu. 4/23/09 1:07pm From: Scott

Soon the kid'll be singing "I'm so bored with Uncle Pat"!
WR, I 'm down - but they were hardly stripped when they came here -- full on strings & horns. Glorious tho, and definitely haunted

Thu. 4/23/09 1:08pm From: Ike

DC Punk, wow, it's you and me against the Steely Dan-loving world (of WFMU DJs).

I was caught off guard when another station, which usually sticks to modern sounds, had some awful old album cut by the Who... I tried to escape from the smegma of the SMB and ended up with the Who and that sent me into a frothing-at-the-mouth classic-mainstream-rock-hating frenzy.

I love the Delgados. And Home!

Thu. 4/23/09 1:12pm From: G.

I'm not sure that the relative priority of CV's plane flight from London to Brasil vs. the release of Transa is crucial, but he worked on the album while still in London, according to the Portuguese-language wikipedia entry on the album. Translating: "in London he recorded at the end of the year [1971] the LP with the name "Transa", released in Brasil in January of 1972, when the singer returned definitively to the country [Brasil]."

Thu. 4/23/09 1:12pm From: Scott

Ike, I love watching you get all positive.

Thu. 4/23/09 1:13pm From: Cecile

I've had enough us vs. them this week to last the rest of the year.

Can you find Transa only as an expensive import?

Thu. 4/23/09 1:13pm From: dc punk

Hoh jeeze, if you go busting on the Who then we're going to have to fight. Yeah they have shitty albums but they actually WERE good.

Thu. 4/23/09 1:14pm From: Parq

Ike, are you getting enough fiber?

Thu. 4/23/09 1:14pm From: james

I had to listen agreeably to an old friend who droned on in his stoned ramblings about how wunderful Steely Dan was ... I said they sound the same each time they played - he insisted you have to be *reall* into them to hear the subtle differences each time they play. Yawn. I did not know any better in the 70's when I listened to them passively. I hate them now.

Thu. 4/23/09 1:15pm From: Swami

Thx for the Space Needle!

Thu. 4/23/09 1:16pm From: stingy d

does anyone else like to imagine a world where ozzy osbourne was the lead singer of led zeppelin, and robert plant of black sabbath?

Thu. 4/23/09 1:16pm From: dc punk

so it's dc punk+Ike+james against the WORLD!

Thu. 4/23/09 1:16pm From: Cecile

yes! really underrated band. they sound better the more I hear them

Thu. 4/23/09 1:17pm From: The World

I'm taking my ball and going home.

Thu. 4/23/09 1:17pm From: stingy d

also... i absolutely hated that delgados song... not for nothin

Thu. 4/23/09 1:18pm From: Ike

Actually I do think a couple of Who songs are OK. That other station picked a song I really hated ("The Real Me").

Parq, are you psychic? Ha.

Thu. 4/23/09 1:18pm From: scott

cecile, i know there's a cd issue, but i don't know offhand if there's a domestic one. As for Steely Dan, I can appreciate them more than I can dig them -- I think the only song I've played by them is "Everyone's gone to the movies", which is a totally sick celebration of pervo pedo action that sounds like the Carpenters. Unless you count that Space Needle song i just played, which is the greatest fucking cover of "Black Cow" (are there many? dunno)

Thu. 4/23/09 1:19pm From: The World

And besides, Irwin f'ed me yesterday for his damn b'day. It still hurts. But sort of a good kind of hurt. {wink}

Thu. 4/23/09 1:20pm From: fishmonkeystew

I always preferred Can, Gong, FZ. and the like when speaking of the "Classic Rock" era. In case you were wondering...

Thu. 4/23/09 1:20pm From: dc pat

fuck you the World!

Oh yeah, I can't stand to even look at Quadrophenia now. But most of the 60's stuff I like a lot.

Thu. 4/23/09 1:20pm From: Cecile

I don't keep up with that Scott.
I like chunks of Aja, but I'm in the same boat as you. But yeah, I joke that their lyrics are all about jailbait and cocaine. Although it's pretty true.

Thu. 4/23/09 1:20pm From: The World

I mean, I saw stars.

Thu. 4/23/09 1:23pm From: Cecile

Although Black Cow is about a float with Coca Cola and vanilla ice cream. But the person drinking it is obviously jailbait on drugs.

Thu. 4/23/09 1:27pm From: james

The who played the Oval cricket ground in 1970 and I was getting through a blue microdot. I cant fucking remember a thing.

Thu. 4/23/09 1:29pm From: dragonflyshards

hi Scott & all..'probably shouldnt start,but...-even if you hate the boring Who crap that's generally played, check out Live At Leeds.(& Sell Out's pretty good),..as for S Dan?..eh.

Thu. 4/23/09 1:29pm From: Pearly Sweets

End of meetings for today, now nothing but Scott!

Thu. 4/23/09 1:30pm From: Cecile

Odds and Sods has some great stuff on it.

Thu. 4/23/09 1:32pm From: Scott

Thu. 4/23/09 1:32pm From: George

Thu. 4/23/09 1:33pm From: dragonflyshards

hi,Cecile--i have it,but i dont remember it...have to give it a go,i guess

Thu. 4/23/09 1:33pm From: Cecile

ah, nice!

Thu. 4/23/09 1:33pm From: dc pat

it's funny, a lot of big Who fans I know HATE Live at Leeds. I could take or leave. I think Sell Out is probably the pinnacle but I still like Tommy and the really early stuff.

Thu. 4/23/09 1:33pm From: Cecile

what? the CV CD?

Thu. 4/23/09 1:34pm From: dc pat

George: coffee in the AM; beer in the PM

Thu. 4/23/09 1:35pm From: G.

Between noon and three, alternate beer shots and coffee shots.

Thu. 4/23/09 1:38pm From: dragonflysheards

dc pat-i believe it...i think the only truly great grateful dead material is on an album that's generally ignored by"deadheads"("vintage-")

Thu. 4/23/09 1:38pm From: Cecile

espresso and vodka is what Michael stipe does.
And that's why he looks so good now. *coughs*

Thu. 4/23/09 1:39pm From: George

i drank the gin up last night, have to settle for tea...

Thu. 4/23/09 1:40pm From: dargonflyshards

tee hee poor Michael

Thu. 4/23/09 1:41pm From: dc punk

Stipe isn't in the band anymore. He was given the boot on Ken's list yesterday.

Thu. 4/23/09 1:42pm From: Cecile

i think John Bush from Anthrax should front REM. He's a great singer.

Thu. 4/23/09 1:43pm From: Michael Stipe

It's the end of my world as I know it. And I feel like shit.

Thu. 4/23/09 1:43pm From: Parq

I, um, still like "Dark Side of the Moon" -- yes, I know, I'll slink away in shame now. But before I do, Ike, re 1:18, "ic" or "o"?

Thu. 4/23/09 1:44pm From: dragonflyshards

-you can still channel the lyrics...

Thu. 4/23/09 1:44pm From: GP

Just found out it is "Talk Like Shakespeare Day"...methinks, 12 hours have been already wasted

Thu. 4/23/09 1:47pm From: Parqspeare

Thu. 4/23/09 1:48pm From: Shake Speare

I would'st bop that.

Thu. 4/23/09 1:54pm From: Ike

Parq, maybe both, but mostly "-ic" because you read my mind re: diet.

If music be the oat and wheat bran swirl cereal of love, play on. Give me excess of it. That stuff is yummy.

Thu. 4/23/09 2:02pm From: stingy d

Harold the Hunkerer

Thu. 4/23/09 2:05pm From: dc pat

right, for instance we no longer have words like 'beautiful' and other such French nonsense.

Thu. 4/23/09 2:06pm From: Carmichael

William of Orange, DC. He thought he could plunder Ireland like a Viking, but he suffered pretty much the same fate. Heads on sticks.

Thu. 4/23/09 2:07pm From: Zombie GP

mmmmmm, heads on sticks

Thu. 4/23/09 2:09pm From: dc pat

oh, well, THAT's different. When a guy says 'Hastings', and William, one thinks 1066. Good, serves that motherfucker right for attempting anything on Ireland.

Thu. 4/23/09 2:11pm From: Carmichael

And you're right, it wasn't Hastings. In my zeal to give the British the middle finger, I got my ass kickings mixed up.

Thu. 4/23/09 2:11pm From: Bill Shakesp.

Yes. Films, that's what I should have been born to do. I could outdo this material! Ah, if only I'd had better theatrical fx back in the day... My death scenes were pretty cheeserrific, honestly...

Thu. 4/23/09 2:13pm From: Hype Man Hank

When I say ho, you say hey
When I say hey, you think Hastings
When I say hype man, you think Flav
........and two seconds later.....Yeah Boyee is in yer brain
But when I say Scott - you say: I cant tell when you're telling a lie.....Is this thing on?

Matt Foley: We-e-e-elll.. la-de-freakin'-da! We've got ourselves a writer here! [ jumps across the room ] Hey, Dad, I can't see real good.. [ lifts his glasses off and on his face ] ..is that Bill Shakespeare over there?

Thu. 4/23/09 2:19pm From: Bill Shakesp.

Hi Scott

I dont know what these commentors are discussing, but here's a little factoid of today. I have to hold the antenna between my lips while working in the darkroom in order to get reception, and that is what I am willing to do to hear you show. Looking forward to filling in next week. Don't play anything too electric I might get hurt.

Thu. 4/23/09 2:29pm From: GP

Maria L....Photoshop called and said " Welcome to the 21st century".

I'm kidding...I also have inhaled more than my fair share of developer fumes.

Thu. 4/23/09 2:31pm From: dc pat

Thu. 4/23/09 2:33pm From: Carmichael

Thu. 4/23/09 2:35pm From: You Family

I don't like the way you said "family obligation." If that is your attitude, please don't bother to come.

New favorite show.

Thu. 4/23/09 2:41pm From: GP

Carmichael, Jandek is tonight at NYU..I think. Liz mentioned it the other day.

Thu. 4/23/09 2:43pm From: maria

to GP-I'm abstaining from a good deal of what the 21st century has to offer, but I do have a small acquaintanceship with Photoshoppe.

Thu. 4/23/09 2:44pm From: Parqspeare

Verily did the question of this same Jandek arise during the events over which our good man Irwin presided just yesterday. Ironic, 'tis, in light of the vast populaton of WFMU partisans who were first apprised of the varlet Jandek by none but Irwin himself.

Thu. 4/23/09 2:45pm From: GP

10-4 Maria...Nice to know people are still doing manual processing.

Thu. 4/23/09 2:47pm From: Cippolina
