Art of Field Recording Volume II
Field recordings were mainly made from the 1930s to the 1980s by a variety of people fascinated with the hodgepodge
of folk music in rural Appalachia, the South, the West and anywhere else native music could be found. As it name implies, these recordings were
made out "in the field", or in other words, the home location of the people who made the music. A majority of the time these recordings were
done not with public consumption in mind, but as a means of obtaining samples for future study and analysis or of simply having a record that
would preserve a sound for posterity. "Art of Field Recording Volume II" is the second collected volume of 50 years of Art Rosenbaum's recordings
released by Dust-to-Digital. This 4CD box set clearly documents the melting pot of American rural music, deeply exploring the roots of modern
bluegrass, country, gospel and blues. The box set comes complete with a 96 page book telling the story of each artist and the song they perform.

For whatever it's worth, I listen mostly via the archives, mostly to the same 8 or so shows: Strength Through Failure, The Brother Lucy Show, Bryce, Inflatable Squirrel Carcase. Z Hour, Daniel Blumin, Airborne Event, and the Stochaatic Hit Parade. Currently off the air favorites include Dave Mandl and the World of Echo, Evan Muse, the Acapulco Dance Party, and the Gateway to Joy. Not that there aren't others shows I also like a lot. Oddly enough, I started at WFMU with Stephan and the Spiral Sun Plan, later to become the Belly of the Beast. | |
