Alice Cooper - "I Love America!"

Tue. 7/1/08 9:20am From: Hillary

Rammstein's Amerika is the only recommendation I can think of.

Tue. 7/1/08 9:22am From: GUMBY

4th of July by John Doe ia a great song. Nothing says America 2008 like "Mexican kids are shooting fireworks below."

Tue. 7/1/08 9:23am From: Bad Ronald

"Afraid of the Russians," by Made For TV

Tue. 7/1/08 9:23am From: john carruthers

patriotic suggestions- "Save the Country" by Paul Revere and the Raiders from the later period "Mirage" album; also "Where Do You Stand" by Willie Nelson

Tue. 7/1/08 9:23am From: GUMBY

I met the Mexican kids in America in a good way.

Tue. 7/1/08 9:24am From: GUMBY

Tue. 7/1/08 9:24am From: bob

what happened to discos mariposa? any inside information?

Tue. 7/1/08 9:25am From: Bad Ronald

EC - "AMERICAN GANGSTER TIME"

Tue. 7/1/08 9:26am From: Hatch

Discos Mariposa was just World Psychedelia I think... but I haven't seen any new discs from them either. Maybe they got in trouble, I don't think any of their stuff was legit.

Tue. 7/1/08 9:29am From: GUMBY

speaking of Willie Nelson Amazon tells me there's a Willie - Wynton Marsalis record coming out. That sounds worth a listen.

Tue. 7/1/08 9:29am From: Bad Ronald

"Funky Dollar Bill" by Funkadelic

Tue. 7/1/08 9:29am From: John Carruthers

"If I Can Dream" by Elvis would be the ultimate 4th of July song

Tue. 7/1/08 9:30am From: C

Miss America -- D. Byrne
I Hate the TV -- V. Femmes
Two sides of a coin

Tue. 7/1/08 9:31am From: kwhitehead

Aaah...the classic one note AC/DC bass line. That Cliff Williams was a master of subtlety.

Tue. 7/1/08 9:31am From: Bad Ronald

"Crawling to the USA" or "American Without Tears" by EC

Tue. 7/1/08 9:33am From: senor

'this is my country' impressions
'4th of july' beach boys

Tue. 7/1/08 9:33am From: GUMBY

That Johnny Horton record about alligators and chasing British soldiers all the way to the Gulf of Mexico, that's patriotic.

Tue. 7/1/08 9:33am From: Frank

What - no Sousa? Seriously, what is more American than some funky marching band music?

(1:02:07 into the show)

Tue. 7/1/08 9:34am From: Hatch

Unpatriotic songs are okay too, as long as they're about America.

Tue. 7/1/08 9:34am From: Bad Ronald

Devo - "Freedom of Choice"

Tue. 7/1/08 9:37am From: g

Dollar Done Fell by Buddy Guy

Tue. 7/1/08 9:37am From: JJZ

I always liked "Horse with No Name" by America. Does that count?

Tue. 7/1/08 9:40am From: kwhitehead

Timely as usual Hatch. I'm rading the Mark E. Smith biography. He's crazy but....good crazy. I love the fuzz bass on this.

Tue. 7/1/08 9:40am From: col. jackson

horton's battle of new orleans? might as well choose a pro-war song right?

Tue. 7/1/08 9:40am From: Matt

"Stupid Americans"- The Ex

Tue. 7/1/08 9:40am From: JJZ

You should play the Hulk Hogan theme song, the one that is about being a "real American" and "fighting for what's right" stuff.

Tue. 7/1/08 9:44am From: Listener Dave from NH

Only time will tell if Hulkamania gonna run wild over WFMU.

Tue. 7/1/08 9:45am From: GUMBY

The Fleshtones - American Sound

Tue. 7/1/08 9:46am From: JJZ

G.I. Joe is a Real American Hero. Along the same lines, the theme from The Greatest American Hero is a good one too.

Tue. 7/1/08 9:49am From: GUMBY

War & Frisbees are the American exports. Sgt. Barry Sadler "Ballad of the Green Berets." and how about all those fascist bashing Woody Guthrie songs. "Gonna kick Mussolini all the way to Bikini" and all.

Tue. 7/1/08 9:50am From: GUMBY

Hatch, I loved the Fall 50 year old man song. Unfortunately I can alsmost relate.

Tue. 7/1/08 9:51am From: ?

fall tracks are friggin hot!
Howabout Thanksgiving by William Burroughs?

Tue. 7/1/08 9:51am From: JJZ

Yes!

Tue. 7/1/08 9:53am From: Listener Dave from NH

Am I the only one doing the three-point crab, then cupping my ear to the four compass points to hear the roar of the crowd?
I need to resist the temptation to drop the big elbow on my laptop.

Tue. 7/1/08 9:53am From: efd

a REAL american would have played that whole song without talking over it!

Tue. 7/1/08 9:57am From: JJZ

I respect his decision. It doesn't take much of that song to get you feeling pumped up with patriotism.

Tue. 7/1/08 9:59am From: Hatch

Sorry Evan, I was overwhelmed. A few more seconds of that and red, white, and blue confetti may have started exploding out of my orifices.

Tue. 7/1/08 10:01am From: efd

Well at least I don't have to worry about stray pieces of confetti in the studio tonight.
Maybe the Iron Sheik had a theme song you can play to offset the Hulkamania.

Tue. 7/1/08 10:05am From: GUMBY

Steve Earle - Amerika v.2.1. songs that talk about cheating on your taxes always bring a tear to my eye.

Tue. 7/1/08 10:06am From: Bad Ronald

Frank Zappa - "Flakes" - It's radio friendly too!

Tue. 7/1/08 10:13am From: GUMBY

Hatch - Sparks - fireworks - 4th of July. You are one tricky devil. MORE SPARKS!

Tue. 7/1/08 10:17am From: Bad Ronald

"WAGON TRAIN" - The Dickies

Tue. 7/1/08 10:27am From: Andy

What is the talkset music?

Tue. 7/1/08 10:32am From: Hatch

That was "Turkish Delight" by Lindstrom & Prins Thomas.

Tue. 7/1/08 10:37am From: Bad Ronald

Nick Lowe - "American Squirm"

Tue. 7/1/08 10:40am From: JJZ

There needs to be to be a song devoted to the most patriotic of sports broadcast on TV, that hot dog eating contest that airs every 4th of july.

Tue. 7/1/08 10:43am From: Carmichael

The Fugs' "Kill for Peace" or Richard Thompson's "Yankee Go Home".

Two vastly different tastes that taste great together.

Tue. 7/1/08 10:51am From: GUMBY

How about a recording where the skinny guy from Japan who always wins the hot dog eating contest does the play-by-play of a tractor pull in that giant shopping mall in Minnesota. That would be the All-American epic.

Tue. 7/1/08 10:52am From: JJZ

He didn't win last year!

Tue. 7/1/08 10:55am From: Bad Ronald

a bit dated but "Ten Cents a Coup" - Phil Ochs

Tue. 7/1/08 10:55am From: GUMBY

No, Who won? I thought that guy was like the Elvis of hot dog eaters.

Tue. 7/1/08 10:58am From: Bad Ronald

John Prine - "Sam Stone"

Tue. 7/1/08 10:59am From: JJZ

"Joey Chestnut of San Jose, Calif., today won the Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest, beating former champion Takeru Kobayashi and setting a new world record by downing 66 Nathan’s Famous hot dogs and buns in 12 minutes."

Tue. 7/1/08 11:01am From: GUMBY

We got the title back. YES!!!!!!! We rule the world! Well until Friday anyway.

Tue. 7/1/08 11:01am From: Hatch

In case anyone wants to hear the rest of that McCain rant:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ok53yzrs9g

Tue. 7/1/08 11:01am From: dc pat

what's the life expectancy of these hot dog guys?

Tue. 7/1/08 11:02am From: GUMBY

Maybe Joey Chestnut should run for President because if he ate like that on the campaign trail he could single handedly stimulate the economy. And he would be a hero.

Tue. 7/1/08 11:04am From: GUMBY

Not that he's not a hero now, but he would be a hero like a 6 foot sub is to a regular hoagie.

Tue. 7/1/08 11:07am From: Carmichael

And our current President is definitely a regular hoagie.

Tue. 7/1/08 11:07am From: Bad Ronald

Buzzcocks - "Running Free"

Tue. 7/1/08 11:10am From: Hatch

Who would win in a hot dog eating contest: McCain, Obama, Nader, or Barr? My money's on Bob Barr.

Tue. 7/1/08 11:10am From: GUMBY

He's like the bread that wants to soak up all the oil. I like that word hoagie, it's better than grinder, that sounds like there's Spam involved in that sandwich and I'm not a spam fan.

Tue. 7/1/08 11:12am From: Carmichael

This music makes me want to salute someone's flag.

Tue. 7/1/08 11:12am From: GUMBY

Nader wouldn't he's in the contest every year, but never wins.

Tue. 7/1/08 11:14am From: Carmichael

Bill Clinton would DESTROY in that contest.

Tue. 7/1/08 11:14am From: joabj

Oooh speaking of patriotic, I just saw a 1969 French film, "Mr. freedom," about a superhero who'se come from the U.S. to save France from communism. He wears a red, white & blue football uniform, and shoots up welfare housing. The U.S. embassy is a grocery store. The French have a superhero too, but he is made of balloons. Just absolutely viciously anti-American. Quite funny.

Tue. 7/1/08 11:21am From: Carmichael

I just re-heard George C. Scott's "Hun Bastards" speech from the movie Patton. An absolute masterpiece of patriotic bullshit! For some reason, I immediately thought of Marv Levy ...

Tue. 7/1/08 11:24am From: GUMBY

That's just the thing about the candidates they never shut up long enough to enter a hot dog eating contest. They would talk right through it.

Tue. 7/1/08 11:28am From: fishmonkeystew

How about "Born on the Forth of July"? Man, what a depressing film that was...

Tue. 7/1/08 11:28am From: Parq

Maybe it's coz I saw it on that date, but I always think of "Spaceballs" as a 4th of J movie.

Tue. 7/1/08 11:31am From: Negator

What was the name of that movie Hatch just recommended?

Tue. 7/1/08 11:32am From: Carmichael

Look up this thread a little higher.

Tue. 7/1/08 11:32am From: Hatch

It's called "All In This Tea."

Tue. 7/1/08 11:32am From: Hatch

The Les Blank film, that is.

Tue. 7/1/08 11:33am From: GUMBY

What's the best music to consume massive quantities of hot dogs to?

Tue. 7/1/08 11:34am From: dc pat

serious as a heart attack

Tue. 7/1/08 11:35am From: Carmichael

Oops sorry Neg. I was still chewing on "Mr. Freedom".

Tue. 7/1/08 11:37am From: Carmichael

Parliament/Funkadelic, Hasil Adkins, Nashville Pussy are all great hot-dog music groups.

Tue. 7/1/08 11:37am From: joabj

heh, that was Serge Gainsbourg who warbled "I like Freedom" at the end of that clip...

Tue. 7/1/08 11:38am From: dc pat

Yeah I guess Hasil Adkins takes the hot-dog-eating cake...so to speak

Tue. 7/1/08 11:40am From: GUMBY

Up for the Downstroke would definately work. "Down, Down, Down" by Dave Edmunds might be good too. "Rock & Roll part ?" by Gary Glitter would be out because of the throw uppy sounding parts.

Tue. 7/1/08 11:42am From: Listener Dave from NH

Oh, duh. Serge Gainsbourg - "New York -- U.S.A." off of "Percussions."
