Was riding with someone recently and an Aerosmith song came on. A song from fifty years ago. I remarked that in 1975 a song that old would've been from 1925. And a Beatles song from 1965 is now sixty years old, so in 1965, a song as old as that would've been from 1905.

I actually have thought about that. It's unthinkable that a popular musician in 1965 would reference a song from 1905. Unless you were like the Holy Modal Rounders. A band in 2025 sounding like the Beatles doesn't get a secornd thought. Which is np problem with me. It just goes to show how time/memory has expanded with technology and the lasting power of youth culture.

He's referring to State Dept "catch and revoke" programs that use AI to determine which students should have their visas revoked, setting them up to be deported. When they detain these students it's indistinguishable from a kidnapping: unmarked ICE, sometimes masked, taking people into custody and then shipping them off to Louisiana or wherever before they can contact any legal counsel or anyone else. If you haven't seen the footage of the Tufts student being nabbed, look for it. It's dystopian. www.justsecurity.org...

Thanks for the explanation. I really wish "kidnapping" or "taken as a part of the catch and revoke program" was used instead of disappearing. My interpretation of disappearing means getting sent to re-education camps, getting sent to the Gulag, getting pushed out of a helicopter over the ocean or outright murder. I'm goiing to mention this to Mark for some clarificiation later.

Post-punk, No-Wave, early Goth, early synth pop were like that, esp. OMD. The technology was more limited then, but it fit in with the "stripped down" aesthetics of the time, and the musicians seemed to really focus on the main instrument instead of burying it in the mix.

But in the case of people being scooped up as part of the "Venezuelan" deportations to El Salvador, those really are disappearances. The only way some family have confirmed where their loved ones are is that they see them on politicians' social media showing prisoners there. No due process. No notification of family, just disappeared. In the case of the grad students, it can be days before friends or lawyers confirm where they are being held. I think that counts as a disappearance too, even if they have been resolved over time. How many people are in those prisons without anyone knowing they are there for sure? www.cbsnews.com...

Yes, mainstream popularity will do that to music - it's made more "snappy", and filled with enough sounds to keep it noticeable and in the commercial radio loop.

Joy Division/New Order are the OGs, and the early Human League (from late 70s Sheffield, before Heaven 17 split off from them) has great minimalist synth sounds.
