If only Lynch had done RotJ - it would have been a flop or near-flop commercial-wise of course, panned as "overdrawn", "bombastic", etc. And it would have brought the SW juggernaut to a grinding halt (as a money-making machine for the studios). But it would have redeemed its very soul, as a creative enterprise -- thus enabling future generations of forks and re-interpretations.

WOW! I just took a quick glance eat the article and will finish it later. I am born and raised just across the bridge from Philly in Jersey. Couldn't tell you if its ever had a time when it was clean and safe. To be fair, I have spent substantial periods of time away from the area. Have family that lived is South Philly back in the mid 60's. It was a garbage pit.

Lynch took Dune instead of Star Wars: RotJ and had such a bad experience on Dune that he resolved to never do sci-fi again. It's too bad, as I would've loved to see another, weirder, more personal SF film from Lynch at some point. Not Star Wars though. IMHO, RotJ would have defeated or demoralized him (more than Dune) with its dreadful script. But that was never close to being a reality anyway, if you read the behind-the-scenes stuff. (I'll post a long Lynch quote on this later.)

Thanks for the mention of the PW article on Lynch, @MarkT + @ultrademo. I lived in South Philly in the mid-late aughts + can confirm that while it was mostly far from gentrified and still definitely had a certain je ne sais quoi -- by then it was very far from a garbage pit, and generally quite safe. I don't know if Lynch had a connection to that part of town - but the Fairmount / Spring Garden districts seemed to be definitely more of his aura, in any case

"I was asked by George to come up... and talk to him about directing [what] would be the third Star Wars. And I had next-door to zero interest, but I always admired George... you know George is a guy that does what he loves, and I do what I love, the difference is what George loves makes hundreds of billions of dollars. So I thought I should go up and... visit with him and it was incredible. I had to go to this building in LA first and get a special credit card and I had to get special keys... and a map and, um, then I went to the airport and I flew up and then they had a rental car all ready for me... I was to drive to this place and I came into an office and there was George... he said, 'I want to show you something', and right about at this time I started to get a little bit of a headache... so he took me upstairs and he showed me these things called Wookies. And now this headache is gettin’, you know, gettin’ stronger. And he showed me many animals and different things. Then he took me for a ride in his Ferrari for a lunch and George is, ah, kind of short, so... his seat was way back and he was almost lying down in the car, and we were flying through this little town up in northern California we went to a restaurant—not that I don’t like salad but that’s all they had was salad—then I got a really, like, almost like a migraine headache and I could hardly wait to get to home, and even before I got home I kind of crawled into a phone booth and called my agent and said there was no way no way I could do this. He said, 'David David David calm down you don’t have to do this.' And, um, so George, bless his heart, I told him on the phone the next day that he should direct it, it’s his film, he’d invented everything about it, but he doesn’t really love directing... But uh... I called my lawyer and told him I wasn’t going to do it and he said you just lost I-don’t-know-how-many millions of dollars but it’s okay.'"

People forgot they weren't 12 year olds. And the entire economic model of Hollywood was irrevocably reversed. the years when funding for films like Fat City and They Shoot Horses, Don't They?, And Day of the Locust, and The Last Detail got nixed in favor of solely making big box-office, so all you get is Marvel universe and 'real' auteurs work in the Netflix ghetto or sell real-estate or something. Lucas is like the man who killed art.

Speilberg eulogized Lynch as making Films that seemed handmade. Speilberg & Lucas ushered in the era of Blockbuster Spectacles. Maybe they have in common being of a similar age cohort & being kids @ a similar time that then become forces in the Industry.

Maybe something by Tarkovsky or in that mood/area? It'd have to be a SF art film (a tough sell at any time in film history), not an action film.

Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Yeah there's also the B-Movie culture where Horror & SciFi have been allowed to play. Lynch might have been able to operate in collaboration there somewhere. Possibly. @ that rate, one thinks of the discussion of how Horror has always misappropriated & ripped off Surrealism - to put it uncharitably...

if films aren't "handmade" (which i think is an awkward description for filmmaking, films are not furniture) what are they...cyborg-made?

...that is - that was really unnecessary for Lynch. He did that on his own as much as he cared to.

StopMotion Animation is pretty handmade I'd posit - in contrast to CGI... The same way Analog sound effects in the 1960s were compared to AI plugins now. You don't just press the same button as everyone else - & you get a unique thing every time.

lynch and cronenberg do overlap a little in the "body revulsion" dept...lynch...the baby in eraserhead....cronenberg...countless examples, but lets say slither, maybe lynch could have gone more into that sort of horror into fulci territory

Exterminating Angel was almost Buñuel's Twilight Zone, such a great movie. That was a good time for the series, The Flight That Disappeared came out the year before, a less remarkable but more noticeable stab at making a movie of that aesthetic

Well - Orson Wells said Cinema is only good when the Camera is an Eye in the head of a Poet.
But Film is also this big Organizational Production.
