The main one is that the Pope forbade it being written down; it was to be performed once a year at the Vatican. Then, a precocious Austrian teen heard it once, went back to his hotel room and wrote it all down from memory, letting the cat out of the bag. The teen in question was Mozart. Unfortunately, none of this appears to be true, but it's a great story.

Apparently it wasn't the basic score itself that gave it its magic, but rather the elaborate embellishments developed by the singers and choirmasters. That's the part that wasn't written down and kept hush-hush as a kind of trade secret. The other thing too is that apparently the best-known version, by the King's College, Cambridge choir, is not entirely historical but rather largely a 19th/20th-century reworking.

Apparently it wasn't the basic score itself that gave it its magic, but rather the elaborate embellishments developed by the singers and choirmasters. The other thing too is that apparently the best-known version, by the King's College, Cambridge choir, is not entirely historical but rather largely a 19th/20th-century reworking.
