don't know much about traditional japanese music other than what i gather as traditional in classic japanese movies, but this piece seems to be rooted in tradition

I know almost nothing about it. This artist is new to me.

I can hear a little of that, but more like the Japanese tradition as filtered through Cage

Terrapin_333:

The first five minutes or so of Vertical Modulation, A 2023 were boring and irritating. But, amazingly, another 20 minutes in and I'm finding it even more boring and irritating.

thanks fred, been skimming you tube to confirm my memory of japanese film music and most of what i found was very western influenced only "throne of blood" had a little of what i was talking about. i did quickly listen to a traditional piece in honno ji style which did resemble vertical modulation

Cage was influenced by Japanese music but integrated that influence in his own way. That in turn encouraged some Japanese composers to do the same thing more overtly, while avoiding reverence or ironic distance

yes, like ryoanji (sp)... the japanese composers probably welcomed cage's music as a way out of being bound by tradition, but at the same time putting it to use

Really enjoying Tristan Allen Act IV: Death and the Dawn Closing .. Lovely composition.. Thanks Jeremiah.

Well, one of Cage's Ryoanji pieces is a little different: the score is basically a graphical rendering of a zen garden there, performers should stick to the shape more than the written notes
  🎷 4:14am
tom tom the pipers son:

↳ fred @4:06
some of cage's artwork (drawings) are a little like zen gardens with stones placed on paper and outlined in watercolor...yes i was somewhat aware of ryoanji relating to zen gardens....heard something recently about a graphic score or some alternate scoring system that was interesting but can't remember...it's late here
