Yes, Xmas Eve has always been beans & donuts, my entire life. When the fam was much bigger (I was kid then) we were not well off. What we ate together was not important, but being together sure was. It probably goes back to some Depression era stuff. A big pot of beans was easy to make and donuts probably seemed fancy and satisfied the sweet teeth (tooths?).
