Aitch, this is what the bandcamp site say: Performers become possessed by a spirit. This possessed condition is called "Ndadi" in the Javanese language. During "Ndadi" Jathilan dancers are possessed by a spirit and perform dangerous movements or stunts such as eating raw leaves or poisonous flowers, or chewing broken glass. Sometimes they fight with swords and slash their arms. Such actions are not meant to display a sense of superiority, but rather serve as an acknowledgement that ordinary people also own the strength to fight against the Dutch troops, respectively any oppressor.
