Skip Spence became the Jefferson Airplane’s first drummer because Marty Balin told him that he “looked like a drummer”. And while Jefferson Airplane Takes Off isn’t quite Surrealistic Pillow it does have some great stuff on it.

I agree. Don't Slip Away and It's No Secret are two of my favorite Jefferson Airplane songs.

PB:

↳ Franco Twinkie @9:59
I agree. Marty’s vocals soar on It’s No Secret on Tales Off. Surrealistic Pillow is my all-time favorite album. By any band, any era.

I recall in the JA book that Pillow's producer has no idea why Jerry Garcia was credited as a "spiritual advisor". He never even saw Jerry.
  10:19pm
PB:

↳ David Shortell @10:17
😂 That’s because Jerry was there “in spirit only”. I recall that the whole album was recorded for less than $7,000. Pretty amazing.

Jerry did the descensing guitar figure on Today which adds a plaintive cast that defines the song.

The staff producers at RCA in 1966 were studio yes men. The Byrds cut a savage version of Eight Miles High in studio A, with Dave Hassinger behind the controls. They couldn't use it for 5D because of idiotic union rules and had to recut it at Columbia down the street.
