shortly before visiting berlin for the first time, i bought a book of photographs taken in berlin from the late 20's to early 50's. the book included post war images of statues of, i guess, notable germans that were damaged and knocked off their plinths. sometime after arriving in berlin, i was walking near potsdamerplatz, and walked passed this small, sort of old, municipal building, there was a narrow alley way next to the building, and i decided to have a look. at the rear of. the building, were the statues i had seen in the book from 1945, all stacked, haphazardly against each other just like in the images in the book i had.

1. Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii is a 1972 concert film directed by Adrian Maben filmed over four days in October 1971. ¿Has anybody watched this apparently visual experience? Considering attending a rare theatrical screening(an hour drive away).
2. Anybody else hear news of a “vintage?” Bowie live concert film being re-released due to the success of ‘Stop Making Sense’ and the unfathomable popularity of the 3hour Taylor Swift Eras placebo. Curious minds wanna know.

PF in Pompei was interesting as I recall. Saw it many years ago. Maybe there's more footage now. I recall there being no dialog at all.

If Bowie in question is from an 80's tour of Japan stay away. It's horribly shot. They ran a bit of it on PBS recently. Looks like it was done by an amateur. Horrible.

Saw it in 1972 at a midnight screening (the only slot it would ever get, where I lived, and at that time in history when stuff like that wasn't on the radio or TV ever). Not strictly a concert film. NO audience, just the band performing in an ancient space, outside of time). More of an 'art' film. I loved it, as a 15 (?) year old, and I think I'd still love it now.

Outside of purely musical concerns, Roger Waters strikes me as someone who has always tried to locate his own place in history. Valuable lessons to be dramatized in novels that can lead readers through experience that can make understanding possible. Germany, then: A country where, say, one part of its citizens decided that the other part of its citizens were not the kind of people they wanted to even call citizens. So a big part of the Germans rounded up the other big part of the Germans, and put them in camps, and tortured and killed them. The Germans killed the Germans. Sure, they were Jews, and Catholics, and homosexuals, and communists....pretty much everyone they didn't agree with, really. Everyone they didn't want to include in the ongoing story of Germany. They decided they only wanted people that they thought were just like them. No on else allowed. EVen if they were Germans.....well, they weren't really Germans at all, they said. They are not patriots. They're losers. The self-defned 'real' Germans decided the time had come to more clearly define their values, and to vote in some essential corrections. And to take over the courts, to make those changes stick. And wherever it met with resistance, there was force. And fear. And death. Now think MAGA.

Yes, adaptable, adjustable to suit the historical situation. The template is a set of ideas aka an ideology that sets out, among other things, how others are to be (mis)estimated and (mis)esteemed. How we value and devalue each other through certain ideas is at the core. Political leaders cannot do without such ideological templates.

I hear you. Cockburn has seen a lot of unpleasant world things first-hand, in his travels. Like novels (as per our guest today), first-hand accounts can convey a lot more experience than a cold news story, for sure. Experience-lived is much more than experience-reported. I like that bit about 5G :)
When someone started yapping to me about that microchip nonsense once I said " hell I don't even own a cell phone so if they put a chip in me maybe I don't need one after all"

It is.

I want a phone that just makes phone calls. I carry a junk phone with no service plan just to be able to call 911 if I need to.

Don't need all the other stuff, but
the plans I see cost the same no matter what (data, text etc.)

I'm retired now but at my last job I had two phones & two, two way radios on my hips everyday.

Once I called it quits I said "if you want to talk to me call me at home or send me an email or egads! an actual letter".

I miss letter writing, a lost art form.

Fauci is out of bounds here, and COVID inoculation is still free here. Too many in my circle of acquaintances have gotten major problems with long-term COVID after being infected; others have been allergic to the inoculation itself. Fortunately, no symptoms for me from the injection, and haven't yet been infected by the disease...

The stranglehold of the algorithms gets tighter from year to year, and a frightening proportions even welcomes it -- for the sake of 'convenience'. To say nothing of the 'enhancement' of the State's control over its population (if the algorithms don't fuck up).

It easy to say that but based on what comparisons?

This is really the first "modern day" pandemic that we have been collection extreme amounts of statistical data on, both on infection & vaccine efficacy.

Polio, smallpox and others etc. all did lots of damage until vaccines were used to combat them but we didn't keep the kind of statistics we do now.

Just a thought
