I nearly brushed elbows with Leonard once, in the 1980s, in an underground concourse beneath the Sheraton Hotel, where we walked right by one another, extremely close. Lost in thought, I raised my eyes and he was right there with me for a moment. He exuded charisma. Impeccably dressed in an expensive yet sombre dark blue pin-striped suit. On hi arm, the most beautiful woman. I seemed to drift into a dream, and then there was just the shoe-shine stands and fluorescent lighting, and places to get your keys cut, etc..and I stood there, alone with my prose...

one of the crazy things going on in india is the official change of name to bharat, the names were always used simultaneously, but now there's an opposition group to modi using i.n.d.ia. as an acronym, so that's why modi wants to change the name regardless of cost.

India is an agglomeration of independent states of both polity and mind, with all the internecine conflicts and suspicions and tensions that any place with an untold number of tribes has. The maps and the names are ephemeral, and the struggles are eternal. The Sikhs here in my country now appear to be unsafe if they express certain opinions, as are the Chinese. Political power and the wealth that is driving it is becoming increasingly draconian, or perhaps it's just that I was once a child who could not see.

Hi Tom Tom! Apart from a lousy experience with our host due to airbnb's deceptive advertising with hidden charges (never again!!), Vienna was great! And the less said about that, the better. Apart from that, we were able to take in some of the riches Vienna has to offer. With two and a half million inhabitants, it's the world's second-largest German speaking city after Berlin, and its elegance and sophistication show. On the way there by car, we stayed overnight on Sunday in the pleasant, historically significant town of Regensburg, where we had an exceptional meal at the Hotel d'Orphée (fabulous escargot!). Driving into Vienna on the second day, Monday, was traumatic due to the chaotic, congested intertwining of Autobahnen that makes life difficult even for seasoned Viennese drivers. On Tuesday evening we were invited to dinner at a first-rate Lebanese restaurant, Ellisar, in the Johannesgasse by a long-standing translation customer of mine, a photo journalist, and his Russian wife, Masha.

The rest of our time was spent walking each day from our accommodation in the Jewish Quarter (with its many orthodox Jews) of Leopoldstadt, located adjacent to the city centre, to various attractions such as Momuk (Museum of Modern Art, showing inter alia a large exhibition by Black NYC artist, Adam Pendleton), Freud's house at Berggasse 19, the Strudelhofstiege (von Doderer!). the Porcelain Manufactory, the Kunst-Historisches Museum with all its many, many gems, the Albertina with, among other exquisite works, its overwhelming collection of impressionist art (Monet!!), the Arnold Schönberg Center (which absolutely inspired me with its well-thought-out exhibition).

The Jewish Mea-Shearim restaurant near our accommodation was very tasty and had a very fine Kosher red. On the last two nights (it was so good) we ate at a delicious, family-run Croatian fish restaurant, Briuni at Blumenaugasse 2. The 900+km drive back on Sunday took eleven hours, without too many jams and congestion, but I'm glad to be back home and off those horribly congested Autobahnen. It only gets worse from year to year, and I am getting too old.

I fear that aribnb has unfolded monopolistic powers, but the next time I'm looking for accommodation somewhere, if it's not a hotel, I'll be scouring the internet for Mitwohngelegenheiten, etc. They used to be available. Between 2016 and 2022 I booked 5 airbnb apartments (with double bed, kitchen, bathroom...), and there was never a charge for a second guest. This time, there suddenly was, but it was hidden as an extra charge! That's airbnb becoming devious and deceptive.

right?

same here -- i remember being in the area at various times in the 1970s, 80s (when i was first venturing into NYC) -- was kinda creepy, but i find the sanitized atmosphere nowadays even creepier (if that makes any sense)

worked in the area, too, in the 1990s -- i remember we were sent home early after the Rodney King verdict -- two coworkers/friends only had to go to LIC and Astoria, and i was headed home to Hoboken -- but the lines at Port Authority for buses going further out to suburban NJ/NY were insane!

and the steps leading up to a second floor at Show World that had flashing neon "Live Nude Girls!" on each step always killed me -- like what, as opposed to dead ones?

On of the few foremost specialists in that area of genetic research went on record saying that he couldn't tell the difference. When asked to consult, he was skeptical, because he'd seen all forms of non-viable embryonic structures, but he was surprised; he said they were very good, and that any difference was indiscernible. He didn't specifically state that they WERE human embryos, but his restraint seemed to imply that was what he was saying.
