Krugman raises the big question of what happens to (the economic viability of) cities in view of remote working. The ground-rent to be had from city blocks of land undergoes revision -- downward. Capital can turn over also in the countryside! Perhaps even faster and with bigger margins.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:11am

Hi Brian D and friends (i.e. familiar WFMU folks). Been listening for 30 minutes and just finished reading the comments.

Not usually awake at this time and only became aware of this program a couple months ago during another unsettled night. Since then have tried to remember to catch the program from the archive but often forgot. The new time slot will work ok for me,

I'm going to roll over and see if I can get a few more hours of sleep. It settles me to be reminded that there are some creative people out there pursuing a better world.

I suppose you've heard about the political repercussions of widening the congestion pricing in London. Land demands its ground-rent, and how much that is depends on how much valorization of capital it generates. Telecommunications change those valorization conditions, though. Marx's treatment of ground-rent in Das Kapital Vol. 3 has been sorely neglected, which in turn has had dramatic (disastrous) political consequences.

Too right. And those who hire out their labour power (aka employees or, in old speak, workers) are conveniently (for valorization) in desiring their own thingification under the wage-form. Hence job-creation, much greeted by wage-earners and politically highly prized, on its flip side simply represents yet another opportunity for capital to valorize. You can call this inversion, which turns the world topsy-turvy and addles the mind.

Thanks Brian. I'll have to adjust my grocery run timing, but I'm used to making my life fit around the WFMU schedule anyway

And thank you ALL. Hope to "see" you next Saturday from 6 am to 9 am. And then Saturdays from the on out. Be nice to Jim (next week) and Fox (beyond). Stay safe and have a great week.

Labour recently lost one of three by-elections due to expanding congestion fees to more outlying areas of London. Seems lots of tradies were pissed off having to pay for their commercial vehicles to enter these areas. One example of voters voting as directed by thingified-value interests. I guess that's how things are in our free market democracy.
