Austin Rich:

As indicated elsewhere, this is a transcription recording of the final episode of the original Candy Matson show, which had run for about 90 some episodes by the 29th of April, 1951. However, a little over a year later, they launched a new pilot... fully pre-recorded, instead of live, and with canned NBC music transitions, and SFX, like with many pre-produced shows. However, the show was not picked up... so all that exists is the pilot, which we will hear next week. Then... we'll take two weeks off for summer, and run some movies on the radio.

And, again, it illustrates how Candy likes to hang out in bars, as referenced quite often in the show. In 1951, the kinds of seedy bars Candy goes to in this show would not usually have women hanging out in them. But... Candy does what Candy wants.

Something tells me that naming this episode "Shannon's A Sucker" sort of spoils that reveal that happens just before the commercial break. I have a feeling they were not so worried about "spoilers" in 1951.

I used to watch my VHS of Scooby Doo Meets The Boo Brothers, and also Groovie Goolies, basically every day after school....

"Horror Island" is only about 60 minutes, has jokes and some good jump scares, and is largely a lot of people confusingly wandering around a castle, on an island. It's GREAT.

If I remember right, Scooby Doo Meets The Boo Brothers is a feature film entirely set in a haunted castle.

Conveniently, my book store has many back issues of "Astounding Science Fiction" magazine, the magazine that sponsored this show. They are usually about 25 - 50 dollars each, depending on how much Bradbury is in them. The magazine eventually became "Analog," which is still in publication, and you can still submit to, with a fairly good chance they will run yours story, if you keep trying.

"Street & Smith" published "Astounding," and was one of the first pulp publishers at the end of the 1800s. Street & Smith, which had some success with sci-fi, decided to try a magazine entirely dedicated to it, and took submissions from fans and readers, who were often skilled sci-fi authors. Quickly, the magazine began to cultivate a good crew of excellent authors, who all went on to fame afterwards.

The "ethnic slur" they use in this show almost sounds worse, in 2023, than it did when I first heard this story. But most likely, it was just as shocking, even then.

If you want a good taste of Clifford Simak's writing, I recommend, "The City," a "fix-up" novel, made up of a number of short-stories from his early career. I can't remember what stories exactly are in it, but it's in the public domain, and easy to find a download of online.

Simak seems to have an interest in depicting military-type characters, with that kind of background, by in Sci-Fi settings. I'm sure there's a paper that could be written there.

This might be one of the more grim X-Minus One Episodes. Certainly several are in the running for that title, but this one has a pretty high body count.
