Favoriting July 12, 2023: Hi-Waisted Modernists #233 - Valley Of The Dolls

On today's Hi-Waisted Modernists with DJ GeorgyGirl, we've got the sunscreen, we've got the beach towel, we've got the 'plane ticket. Now all we need is the blockbuster novel for the lilo by the pool - and this week it's 1960s glamour and sleaze with Jacqueline Susann and "Valley of the Dolls". Old Fashioned, anyone?

'I'm a salami writer
- but I try to be a good salami writer.'
- Stephen King
What I get out of this prose here - is that Form & Content (to to say Function) are in perfect accord. It's about the Trash inside of Glamour - but not only is studiously knowing about every detail of this - but presents it with a deceptive lack of surface texture itself. It gives exposition without appearing to moralize ...tho the observation is unflinching enuff some internal reality shines thru regardless. I want to compare to LouReed singing about underground people without moralization - but these are overground people treading water to stay there... & what is our place as Consumers ? Of both these Celebrities (real &/or fictional...) - & these 'novels'. Comfortably removed - or voyeurs putting coin into the viewer...
