I once wrote a piece for my local alt-weekly about trying to ID a different song that I'd found on FMU and after some correspondence with Bob Brainen, he played my handheld recorder version of it for listeners to identify. In minutes I had my answer: Jim Price: "Dreamin'" and a more sublime piece of baroque pop I know not of.

clarke - Re: zines in the library. So zines are all the rage currently university wide here. The approach has been pretty wide eyed like "We have discovered this amazing cultural artifact!" even though zines have been around for 50+ years and it seems academia has been collecting zines for over 20 years.

So my particular library has been procuring zines for it's collection and GAs have been doing zine making workshops. All cool, nothing wrong with that. Most of the zines focused on at the library seem to focus on identity politics. Again all cool.

Since most of my cool workers seem to think zines were invented in the last few years I thought about bringing in some zines from the 80s-90s for context. Then I realized that there'd be an add for a Dwarves record or centerfold pic of David Yow and I'd be sent to HR in about 2 minutes hahaha!

it was. after their set, greg handed me his bass, bob went behind the drum kit, and a few people took turns with bob's flying v. i stood by the floor tom and said to bob, "sex bomb?" and we launched into a good half hour of flipper chaos. afterward, he said, "you should be in a band." i told him that i was (drug puppies, at the time), and gave him a demo tape (same on that's on bandcammp). never heard from bob again, but it remains the single greatest rock and roll moment of my life. i was just about to turn 18. fun times...

In the fanzines at the library that's I've looked at (a fair sampling at this point) there is been absolutely not one mention of music. All identity or art related. Most of the zines do not have any contact information written in them so I'm not sure how the exchange happens. I'm obviously waaaaay out of touch too.
