Right on here. I know a lot of folks just like to listen to shows that sit directly on top of their own record collections, but WFMU is great for the "colliding spheres" effect, as it were.

For example, Gaylord, played many artists that I knew but he'd often focus on more obscure tracks or make a connection to another artist or style within his show that would introduce me to something completely new that I probably would not have come across on my own.

Course I always say very FMU-J is a World.
Also always note that FMU so often illustrated how everything is Context. It's the Gallery a Painting is hanging in with others as well as just the Painting itself. *More* than we like to think with our Aesthetics. But which we enjoy nonetheless.
Which underscores that being a DJ is an Art. It really is. & for us anyhow - one that Matters...

I typically use the words "wide" and "deep" to describe WFMU's programming. "Deep" shows at their best find obscure and unheard songs that test the boundaries of a given genre. "Wide" shows at their best can make fascinating connections between genres. I always considered my old freeform show to be medium deep and extensively wide, which makes it so much fun to go just deep on, say, my Drop-In fill-ins

I think a lot about what the real differences between R&B and Rawk might actually be. If white &/or UK Rawkers are more aggressive - I wonder if that derives from a position of Privilege - as we regard the term these days. Certainly there was actual Appropriation going on often enuff - which we are all aware of here. Of course it was also true Assimilation - & Mutation...
If John Lennon was *allowed* to scream 'Money' more than Barrett Strong - is it that he also does it *for* him ?
Of course - can also be a simple difference of personal Styles...

Today's show is really good for me to hear overall. As a teenager growing up in Michigan in the 80s, 'oldies' radio programming played the Motown hits to death. Many of the hits became overfamiliar. I never ended up disliking the hits but eventually discovered other "music factories" from that era that I liked better.

In recent years, enough distance has passed that when I hear Motown writers and performers (especially picked by WFMU DJs) I'm hearing it with fresh ears and get a lot out of it. Joe's show is an example of it.

Gordy made a lot of mistakes. The other day I read a piece where Ken Sands (recording engineer) reminisces about What's Going On.
