Whenever I went out for a beer with her or to see live music (this is back when you could still spew secondhand smoke anywhere you wanted) she would ask anyone she saw with a pack of Marlboros if she could have the Marlboro Money. On top of the pool table, she (and her brother back home) also had a ton of other Marlboro crap -- I seem to remember an inflatable pool float and bar towels used as kitchen towels at her shared home where we were getting our degrees. But the pool table was clutch -- I was shocked to know that she'd already had it for a few years already when i went out there. Also she had something like 8 aunts/uncles who also chainsmoked AND saved their bucks for her and her bro AND also asked at the mah jong parlor. I should have bought enough for my own pool table off of her....

Oddly enough, another friend of mine, also an older NY Jew, had the SAME one growing up and still has it at his place in Brooklyn. When I finally got my first apartment in NYC, Mom had been gifted a much larger menorah from a metalworker and offered me the old family one. I've had it ever since. Made in Israel in 1961 IIRC.

On top of the pool table, she (and her brother back home) also had a ton of other Marlboro crap -- I seem to remember an inflatable pool float and bar towels used as kitchen towels at her shared home where we were getting our degrees. But the pool table was clutch -- I was shocked to know that she'd already had it for a few years already when i went out there. Also she had something like 8 aunts/uncles who also chainsmoked AND saved their bucks for her and her bro AND also asked at the mah jong parlor. I should have bought enough for my own pool table off of her....

Oddly enough, another friend of mine, also an older NY Jew, had the SAME one growing up and still has it at his place in Brooklyn. When I finally got my first apartment in NYC, Mom had been gifted a much larger menorah from a metalworker and offered me the old family one. I've had it ever since. Made in Israel in 1961 IIRC.
