A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Good morning, Trouble and Modernists! Here's something interesting. Bill Griffith, creator of Zippy the Pinhead, published a book of travel sketches many years ago. He describes hearing a song called "Baby Cat Mommy Cat" all over Italy in 1984. In a classic of misunderstood lyrics, it turns out to be Rita Lee's "Bem Me Quer," played on this show May 5! This has been driving me nuts for nearly 40 years!!!

Hey Trouble and Troublemakers. My favorite, the perfect kind of Troubled morning: a grey canopy overhead, still some leftover rain but slowed, wet and effervescent shades of green in the park, all the annoying and selfish buffoons kept at bay by it all for the most part.

Here's the gist of the NYT article: On Friday, Randall Poster will release the first volume of “For the Birds,” a star-studded, 242-track collection of original songs and readings inspired by or incorporating birdsong; later this year, it will be bundled as a 20-LP boxed set to benefit the National Audubon Society. The project sprawled, he said, because birds seemed to be on everyone’s mind. “People were spending a lot of time looking out the window,” said Poster, one among the legion of bird-watching initiates in the pandemic. “There was so much that was unknown and unknowable that we were comforted by the fact nature was still doing its thing.”

“For the Birds” unspools like a version of a soundtrack Poster might design for an Anderson film, cavorting through moods and styles at will. There are elegies and aubades, fiddle tunes and field recordings. A radiant electronic trance from Dan Deacon and a Beatles interpretation from Elvis Costello share space with a Jonathan Franzen reading; Laurie Anderson, Alice Coltrane (remixed), Yoko Ono and a reading from Wendell Pierce open separate LPs.

I'm in a great food town (New Orleans) but a simple breakfast sandwich (egg on a roll) is beyond everyone's capabilities. There's a donut shop by me that advertises a breakfast sandwich but it takes ten minutes, which right there shows you they don't know how to do it. It's on white toast. If you ask for it to go you don't get a neat paper and foil wrapped parcel, you get a styrofoam clamshell and a plastic bag that you have to hang on your handlebar or just enjoy your sandwich in the parking lot.

I feel blessed that I actually live upstairs from a great bakery--mostly Italian sweets but they have a small deli case and from early until about noon you can get a good bakery semmich (ie egg and cheese on a roll, done the old fashioned way). Never hit any of the other bodegas near me for same, but there is also a Mexican grocery place next door to a Columbian cafe' closeish to me; both do a mean brekkie semmich from what I have been told.

I told on musician they were better than the Grateful Dead to which he replied "that's because we are the grateful living!". Glad I was there. That said, given current Omicron surge (that the city seems to be still largely in denial about) one wonders if this the right time to be doing "in-person mega events" (of the alcohol-sloshed variety) again, despite our sincere need / wish for such. At least completely "sans restrictions" they way this event seems to be set up.

We’ve been adhering pretty rigorously to all protocols. Though I usually won’t worry too much about outdoor gatherings, provided it’s not people packed in tightly upon one another.

There’s just so much for the citizenry’s to get together in person to talk about, and a philosophical event seems perfect. Between the capitalist price gouge pillaging to the vicious RW white supremacist massacre to the Ukrainemania distraction promulgated by state media propaganda to the mishandling of the pandemic - there’s just so much to in my view that could really set things off like never before. And in a time like that I think it’s most effective to gather in person (heeding pandemic guidelines) than online.
