In the summer of 1980 I went to see X, The Dead Kennedys, The Cramps and Chrome. For the first time in my life, I thought - what the hell am I doing here? The thrill was gone. Did that stop me from hanging out in clubs and bars? Hardly. The next year was a big smear of misery.

Some of them, I'm sure. I didn't "join" FMU until 1990, and only first heard the station around '87 or so, so I don't really know. The first DJ's I heard were R. Stevie Moore and Fred Frith!

Franco, why did you say “the thrill had gone”? Was that a personal rubicon or musical disappointment at what was on offer?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:15pm

It was the former I'd say. You have to realize, I had been at it for years. It was something I worked through by continuing to go out and see bands constantly.

I do suspect there weren't a lot of radio shows like this one in 1981. But really, what do know?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:36pm
Franco Twinkie:

I can't remember what year it was, 79-80? but I did see Pere Ubu at The Whisky a go-go in Hollywood. David Thomas beat on a piece of metal with a hammer, creating a hypnotic effect. It was a very hot summer night, and after the show the entire audience it seemed, went to the record flea market in the parking lot at Capitol records, which started at mid-night and went till sun up.

Franco Twinkie:

Listening to this presented as a curated collection rather than the chaotic mess of real time 1981, it strikes me that lot of artists were suffering from feeling displacement and vertigo. It wasn't just me, but 1981 was horrible for everyone. It was as if a strange cloud of of suspect origin had settled over the entire Earth. Case in point: SPK. You had to be slightly deranged to find them entertaining. I did, but that's because I'm disconnected in a serious way.
