Oh man, I got the brunt of this jerk's uncivility last week on a plane ride from Detroit to Seattle. I was flying with my 5 yr old daughter and almost 2 yr old son who was riding on my lap. My flight had been switched by the airline so that my daughter and my seat now straddled the aisle. After I boarded, we were sitting with my kids in the row of one of our seats. This dude who was with his family barked at the that we were in his seats and to get out. I asked if we could switch so that my daughter and I could sit together. Again, I was told to get out.

Some kind people let us switch with them so we were in front of the dude. I turned around to apologize for any misunderstanding. The dude then told me several times to shut up and turn around.

I mainly notice that the subtle art of accommodating others has disappeared from the sidewalks, the series of small adjustments one makes to pace and angle to acknowledge a shared space. These work much less well when only one party is using them.

Or maybe I have just grown old and ugly enough that the 20-30-years-olds who rule the sidewalks just can't see me?

But is incivility worse than it was? Hard to say. And when?

The method of capitalism is always to turn all against all so that labor can never come together to demand human treatment from capital. So all is inculcated as competition, as a resource that goes only to the strong. And everyone else is out to get it.

So ... when would it have been better? I'd say things have been pretty bad these last five hundred years and more, depending on where you are and how visible the victims of incivility and worse are for that time and place. And they don't seem to be getting any righter in much of a hurry.

Though maybe it's a bit heavy for a Friday afternoon. Oh, it's too hot.

Granted - Genghis Khan wasn't civil - nor Roman slavers...
I will take what Terence McKenna spoke about & go further than 500 years back to Homo sapiens leaving the woods & forests & getting Patriarchal & needed Armies & all the rest... The idea that our deep history wasn't recorded &/or has been repressed... One thinks of the 1940s characterized by some National identity that unified (I wonder out loud why the pandemic response was never like that...) - & the PostWar 1950s boom still having that... but of course, mostly for affluent white males... & then - since the 1970s, productivity has increased while wages have remained utterly stagnant... So we still have the American Dream but it's increasingly a Nightmare that no one can afford... WWII followed the Depression. Take the Money out - & the social benevolence follows...

...I would say that - as someone who would identify as Rawker (itself an aspiration, to be charitable towards myself) - I am an interesting mix of arrogance & ideals... I also consider myself a Creative by temperament. Many things I consider simply not my purpose in life.
...Is it possible to be a narcissist & have little confidence? (Maybe - it's a prerequisite...)
I would say I used to be a lot ruder & more arrogant. Old age & the vagaries of the 21st Centry have beaten a lot of that out of me. So even those haven't been useless...

The 1981 medley really hit home b/c I was 13, and my mom had just started dating after my father's death two years prior. She found a disco on Long Island and went once a week, and suddenly started listening to all that godawful disco (I was 13 so probably at my The Who phase). I like disco now, but every song in that medley brought me right back there .

I was in the military in '81, overseas and away from any American music. When I got out, I was a little astonished at the radio back home. I went from Frampton, Allmans, Who, to Tears for Fears, Michael Jackson and Pet Shop Boys. I think I just now recovered. Thank heavens for Mdou Moctar.

I kinda cheated - I had an older brother with 1,000s of albums & stuff - & I got spoon-feed masses of Rawk. So I knew about Punk as Music if not as a DIY life. On my own - I obsessed over TheBeatles & EarlyWho for example completely out of temporal context...
Now with online streaming above all WFMU - I feel it's an unprecedented era for access & listening.

I was speaking 🗣️ with a friend about M&Ms which I haven't had in a long time. I remembered when I do eat M&Ms I segregate them by colors, and eat all of one color before proceeding to a different color and so on. Any one else do this? Just curious.
