Well, now I know just what to tell Jersey City that I have learned from listening to WFMU ...

Rosey is Listening on 91.1 MHz:

Always enjoy Stravinksy. Never heard that one before either. I also wanted to jump on here to say that Jersey City questioning whether WFMU provides educational programming is really really bothering me. I don't know if there's a single time that I've promoted the station to people I know without mentioning how amazing the educational aspect is. The deejays know so much. Amazing background and history on the artists and songs, and then I also wind up learning about all of these really important and influential artists throughout history that almost nobody knows about today. Your show and Old Codger are great examples of that. And your mic breaks are so informative and educational about the compositions, composers, and music itself. And, like, the show right before this, has interviews with movie soundtrack composers. I mean, give me a darn break that this station isn't educational. You better believe I'll do the little I can by at least writing a letter and hopefully getting others to do the same. The other noncommercial stations in the area are also really important and have an educational aspect. This is an important fight. Anyway, I'm going to sit back and enjoy the music in the meantime. So happy to be here with you as always, Bethany!

Not that I know very much, but this is the first time learning of "stringendo"
  8:20pm
headcleaner:

Probably best not to cite the Old Codger in these letters we are all busily typing off to the City of Jersey City (though I do learn a lot from the old **er)
  8:21pm
lpfnrobin:

Yeah this educational programming ? thing has be bothered...maybe they should have just LISTENED to it to understand its total education
Avatar 8:22pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Rosey 1000%. It's frustrating - because it seems clear that revoking Educational status is really a pretext for extortion of this Listener Supported station for their declining real estate Tax coffers. That is - it isn't *really* the question - but - they are framing it this way ...So...
  8:25pm
Eugene R.:

If nothing else, the Old Codger did instruct us about ... FLIP THE FROG!!
  8:26pm
headcleaner:

@lpfnrobin: strange as it may sound to us... the idea of an "education" that is not so thoroughly managed and productized (as we know from... our beloved institutional learning facilities), but which rather simply "is"... and as such, is way more vibrant, enduring and endearing than (not every instance of, but surely your average-case, typical) institutional education... is not only alien, but (due to their "education") nearly incomprehensible to a great many people
Avatar 8:27pm
Bethany Ryker:

Thank you Rosey and all, yes - we're all in this together to listen and learn. You can bet we'll be fighting this one with all we got!!
  8:27pm
headcleaner:

I don't think there's anything sinister with this questioning of educational status - just typical random bureaucratic inertia. These are people who live and die by "scripts" after all... and if your mission statement doesn't fit their "script"... woe be unto you!

Rosey is Listening on 91.1 MHz:

Revolution Rabbit Nov63, yeah, I certainly don't know much, just outside of what the deejays have been saying, but that certainly stands to reason. I wonder if apartments could be built on top of Monty Hall. Well, in any case, let's keep sending those letters of support. Still have to do mine.

Seriously, Eugene R. It's so cool that I learned about Flip the Frog. And there are plenty of artists that Courtney plays who I look up information about later and am stunned to learn that they were like the biggest things in entertainment during their times, like the 30s or 40s or whatever. And almost nobody knows about these people and their contributions. Musical history is especially interesting too because it's so multicultural, and it's so important that credit is given where credit is due to those who produced great music in their times and paved the way for music we have today while inspiring young people of all backgrounds to take up music and the arts.

Scott from Maryland:

I again want to thank you, Bethany, for the unique programming you offer WFMU listeners each week. It is wonderful to hear things I've not heard before and be introduced to composers, compositions and performers for the first time. A440 is a welcome change from the "classic" playlists of Bach, Beethoven and Brahms played by many "classical" stations. Keep up the good work!
  8:47pm
headcleaner:

@Bethany - some quick tips: since these are accountants and committee-types you'll be speaking to - whipping out numbers will be very helpful: "600+ composers covered in more than 250 hours of programming since 2012". And also, don't be shy about showcasing the historical + pedagogical aspects of your show (beyond just the music-theoretical component) - "My show seeks to not just to entertain but to explore the technical underpinnings of the compositions that it features, narrate and and document the social and historical context in which these great works were produced", or something like that

headcleaner, that sounds pretty helpful in general too for when I put together my letter. Bethany, I'm a writer and journalist. I should be able to help. I'll probably go ahead and send you an email. Shouldn't really be an issue. My brain still hasn't quite been right since a second traumatic brain injury from a few years ago, so my brain is foggier and slower, but writing is still one of my greatest skills, even if I'm not quite as quick and sharp anymore. Would be happy to help a great cause and great deejay.

And if WFMU has helped in your recovery (as it has helped me recover from non-physical brain "injury" in the form of stress, isolation, etc) - then you may want to mention that in your letter
